The Department of Health and NHSEngland wrote this booklet.

We help people in England stay healthyand live good lives.

In 2014 we set up a working group to lookat children and young people’s mentalhealth.

They thought about how to:

● make it easier for children, youngpeople, parents and carers to get helpand support

● make help and support better.

When we talk about your mental healthwe mean:

● how you feel

● how you cope with people or things inyour life.

1 child out of every 10 needs help for theirmental health.

Some just need help for a short timebecause they are worried or depressed(feeling very sad, hopeless and not able todo the things they would usually do).

Others might have serious mental healthproblems for a long time.

This can make them feel very scared andlonely and can upset the people who carefor them.

Mental health problems could mean you:

● do not do as well at school

● are more likely to smoke, drink toomuch alcohol, take drugs or take partin risky sex

People said:

● only 1 in every 4 young people with amental health problem gets thesupport they need

The working group said:

● services must involve you and yourcarers when they make decisions orplan services

● you and your carers should get whatyou need from services

● services should be easy to use

● services should learn from what workswell and show how they help people.

Councils, health services, schools andyouth justice services should worktogether to change things by:

● helping you have good mental health, cope when things go wrong and getsupport before things get worse

● working together so it is easy for youto get the right support from the rightservice

● linking services so it is easier for you towork out how different services willsupport you

● using better information about whatworks well to plan support that is goodvalue for money

Page 15: Easy Read version of: Future in mind: promoting ... · Easy Read version of: Future in mind: promoting, protecting and improving our children and young people’s mental health and

11

● showing services how to get better byhaving staff with the right skills andexperience

● checking that different services in theirarea make the most of their staff andmoney.

In some parts of England these things arealready happening. But they need tohappen everywhere.

This is what we want things to be like inEngland:

l People understand children and youngpeople with mental health problemsand treat them fairly.

l Services give you and your carers thesupport you need at the right time, and plan with you how and when youmove to adult services if you need to.

l Services find out what works well anduse this to plan how to treat you.

l You can get support in different ways, including ‘one stop shops’ with stafffrom lots of services.

If things go really wrong you get the rightcare as close to your home as possible.

No one under 18 is taken to a policestation to keep them safe.

Parents get support to make their childrenfeel safe and secure and have goodmental health as they grow older.

There is better support for children whoneed lots of care. Especially those who aresexually abused and need special help.

Services are open and honest and say howlong people have to wait, how well theyhelp people and what this costs.
