January Winter Weather Safety

January can be beautiful with snow, but snow presents its own set of challenges for walkers and

bikers. Talk with your children about the challenges that slick roads present and help model safe behavior for them as we get through the winter months.

Tips for winter walking and biking safety to share with your child: Snow and ice build-up can make sidewalks slippery. Anticipate ice and be cautious on untreated surfaces

to prevent falls.

Use crosswalks whenever possible. Snow plows frequently lead to mounds of snow on corners, making walkers and bikers less visible to drivers. Crossing at designated crosswalks increase safety for walkers and bikers.

Wear warm and waterproof shoes when possible. Melting snow makes for cold feet.

Be visible and wear bright colors. There is limited daylight in the winter so make certain other people can see you.

When possible, use a lamp on bicycles to increase your visibility.

Choose routes that you are likely to be visible to other people to help keep you safe.

Keep your eyes and ears open and be aware of your surroundings in the event that you have to get out of the way. Snow accumulation can muffle sounds of approaching vehicles. Hats and scarves further muffle noise, so make certain you can still hear what is going on around you.

Tips for drivers: Clear windows and mirrors completely for visibility.

Be aware of pedestrians and bikers.

Start and stop slowly.

Come to full stops at intersections and look both ways, especially in school zones. Additional resources: Safe Driving tips: https://www.osha.gov/Publications/SafeDriving.pdf Winter Safety Tips: https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/news-features-and-safety-
