Unknown to most, an eating disorder is a disease that affects both female and males alike. Recognizing the warning signs and knowing when to refer someone for help can be a life-saving intervention. Dr. Tracie Pasold and Dr. Maria Portilla pair up to offer their expertise on eating disorders with a two-part presentation entitled, “Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents.” This seminar is a must for anyone who works with or knows a child or adolescent. Workshop Overview:

Dr. Pasold will discuss:

• Classification, epidemiology, mortality, etiology of Eating Disorders • Recognizing emotional/behavioral and physical symptoms • Diagnostic criteria and categories • Treatment, recovery process, and strategies for prevention

Dr. Portilla will discuss:

• Identifying children and adolescents with a possible eating disorder • Medical complications of eating disorders • Medical management of children and adolescents with eating disorders • When to refer a patient with a possible eating disorder to a specialist

Last thirty minutes:

• Questions and answer session

Workshop Speakers: Dr. Tracie Pasold Dr. Tracie Pasold is an Assistant Professor at UAMS and Director of Clinical Services at Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Adolescent Medicine and Eating Disorders Specialty Clinics. She obtained her Master and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Toledo, Ohio. She completed an internship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) specializing in treatment of children, adolescents, and their families. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UAMS and ACH specializing in pediatric psychology, focusing on treatment of children and adolescents with eating disorders, chronic medical illness, chronic pain, obesity, sleep disorders and general outpatient issues (depression, anxiety, grief and loss). She specializes in the assessment, prevention and treatment of eating disorders in children and adolescents. Dr. Pasold has published her research in state, national and international journals, has presented at state, national and international professional conferences and provides education to a wide range of professionals as well as the general public. Dr. Maria Portilla Dr. Maria Portilla is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Medical Director of the Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Clinic at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She is a faculty member of the UAMS Department of Pediatrics and practices at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She received her medical degree from the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, South America. She completed her pediatric internship at Charity Hospital/Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her pediatric residency at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital/St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Portilla specializes in the medical complications and medical management of patients with eating disorders. Dr. Portilla has published her research on eating disorders in reputable and diverse journals. Dr. Portilla has given presentations on eating disorders at local, regional, national and international conferences. She trains UAMS residents and fellows on eating disorders at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Portilla also provides education to professionals of different backgrounds and to the general public.
