Yellowstone in Winter is one o the most stunning, awe inspiring landscapesto be ound anywhere in the world and one that all photographers shouldtry to visit at least once during their li etime.

Gone are the summer crowds that turn Yellowstone into a amily circus andas winter approaches a silence descends onto the worlds premier location

or both Landscape and Wildli e Photographers. Yellowstone in Winter sim-ply put is a photographers paradise.

Ive been ortunate to visit Yellowstone during the winter months or thepast ew years, and all I can say is that I eel so lucky and privileged to havedone so. And I wouldnt have missed it or the world!

Its like being a child at Christmas, waking up so excited knowing that theday is going to bring so many rewards and gifs! As a photographer it justdoesnt get any better!

Winter brings a solitude to this landscape that ew people ever get toexperience, but the ew who do are rewarded with memories and imagesthat will stay with them or the rest o their lives.

Tey say that around 80% o Yellowstone is covered in pine orest and Yellowstone covers 2.2 millionsquare acres so that equates to a lot o orest. But images such as this come alive when the trees are

covered in snow and they make or very interesting subjects.

Plate 8 Lone Buffalo on Grand Prismatic

Tis image was captured on our last afernoon in the Park one year. Boy was it cold.Only a ew o us ventured up to the Grand Prismatic to capture some more images o the bacteria mats asthe wind was blowing the steam away exposing the brilliant colours. As we were making our way along

the boardwalk I suddenly heard a strange sound coming rom the thick steam. And then this Buffalo just appeared right in ront o us, bold as brass in exactly the right position on the

bacteria mat. It was a great way to end a anstastic trip.

    Plate 9 Stark Lodgepole Pines

I rst noticed this small stand o Lodgepole Pines many years ago during one o my Fall trips to Yellowstone, but neverbothered trying to make an image o them as the conditions just werent right. In my minds eye I knew that the

conditions would have to be very cold. With these conditions in mind I had a airly good idea that the geyser activitythat you can see in the background would become much more pronounced and add an ethereal quality to the image andalso give a very strong overall composition to the image. When we rst arrived at this location it was totally og bound

and you could just barely see the pines, but afer a while it began to lif and this was the end result.

Tis is another image that at any other time apart rom the Winter months you would probably not even notice!Tis lone tree against the snow covered hills just seems to come alive during Winter. Te delicate olds o the hil ls

We rst noticed this solitary Coyote way off in the distance in one o the many meadow areas o Yellowstone.Even though at the time he was too ar away to photograph we spent some time just watching him as he went about his

business looking or small rodents or his evening meal. Afer a while he started to move closer to us until he was nomore than about a 100f away and seemingly totally oblivious to our presence, provided this photographic opportunity.

O course we were eternally great ul to him!

    Plate 16 Morning Glory

Most mornings we head directly towards the main Geyser Basins in the Park as these locations generally providethe most prolic opportunities. No two mornings ever seem to be the same as different temperatures and varying

conditions give such different atmospheric conditions.

Bobcats are elusive by nature and one o the rarer animals to be seen in Yellowstone. You are much more likely to see Wolves than you are one o these. One evening we were making our

way back out o the park when our driver noticed this ellow across the river rom us. Parking the vehicle some way away rom him we walked slowly and silently so as to hope ully not spook him

into leaving in too much o a hurry. As it was he provided us with some excellent poses.

    Plate 21 Grand Prismatic Abstract

I nd abstract images ascinating and Yellowstone provides a wealth o these kind o images. All around the thermal areas are what are known as Bacteria Mats which are living organisms unique to Yellowstone.

Tey thrive in conditions where most living things would perish in an instant due to the boiling surroundings.Tese minute organisms give the photographer a wealth o subjects and colours in all shapes and sizes and make

    or exceptionally good abstract images.

Ofen the air temperature in Yellowstone during the Winter months can drop to 30 below Farenheit.Added together with the steam activity rom all the thermal eatures and we ofen come across images such as the one

above o trees literally covered in ice. I nd these kind o subjects to be most photogenic.

Bison are by ar the most numerous o the large mammals in Yellowstone numbering around 3,000.During the Winter months they migrate rom the open valleys and meadows where they have spentsummer and move to the warmer thermal areas o the Park where there is less snow accumulation,

making it easier or them to orage or ood.

    Plate 30 Blue Ice

Te Grand Canyon o the Yellowstone is spectacular at any time o the year, but during the wintermonths and under certain lighting conditions the ice takes on a blue colour.

Tis is partly due to the location being nearly 9,000 f above sea level where on a clear day the colour temperature o the light affects the ice. On the ollowing page on Plate 31 the conditions

were overcast giving an overall warmer eel to the image.

    Y e l l o w s t o n e i n W i n t e r.

Each year during the winter months I have the pleasure to conduct at leastone, and sometimes two photographic trips to Yellowstone in Winter.

Tese trips have been meticulously planned or both the landscape andwildli e photographer, giving maximum opportunities to obtain rst classimages or both. We spend a total o EIGH ull days in the Park whichallows us to visit most locations at least twice and always to be in the rightplaces at the right times.

We charter our own Snow Bus that allows us to visit where and when wewant and or as long as we want. When the conditions are at their very bestthis gives us time to linger over our photography, rather than rushing romone location to the next.

I have been conducting Photographic Holidays and Workshops to theAmerican West since 1994.

Please eel ree to pass this eBook onto any riends that you eel may wish to view it so that they may also enjoy the images o Yellowstone in Winter.

And o course should you have any questions or you would like to knowmore about attending this trip, or any o the others that we run throughout

the year then please just contact us.

    Kind Regards,Nigel urner.
