When No One Is WatchingWritten by Eileen Spinelli

Illustrated by David A. Johnson

When no one is watching, it’s easy to be brave — to dance and sing, growl and cheer. But when everyone’s watching, this book’s shy young narrator finds it far easier to hide. With her best friend Loretta, though, she doesn’t feel embarrassed, awkward, or odd. Not one bit. Together they’re like two peas in a pod — whether anyone’s watching or not.

Any readers who have felt shy will certainly recognize themselves within the pages of this adorable book, which encourages even the most timid with its celebration of the value of a good friend.

Eileen Spinelli is the author of over thirty-five picture books and novels, including Jonah’s Whale, Now It Is Summer, Do You Have a Cat?, and Do You Have a Dog? (all Eerdmans). Her book Now It Is Winter (Eerdmans) was named a Bank Street College Best Children’s Book. Eileen lives in Pennsylvania. www.eileenspinelli.com

David A. Johnson is an accomplished editorial artist whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, and The Atlantic. He has illustrated several children’s books, including Call Me Marianne (Eerdmans) and Abraham Lincoln (Scholastic). He has also written and illustrated Snow Sounds (Houghton Mifflin). David lives in Connecticut.

NasreddineWritten by Odile Weulersse

Illustrated by Rébecca Dautremer

It’s time to go to market, so Nasreddine loads up the donkey and sets off with his father. But when onlookers criticize his father for riding while Nasreddine walks, the boy is ashamed. The following week, when Nasreddine persuades his father to walk and let him ride, the two are criticized once again! No matter what Nasreddine tries, it seems that someone always disapproves.

Nasreddine is a legendary character popular in stories told throughout the Middle East and other parts of the world. This clever story will bring him to a new audience. Accompanied by stunning artwork, the fable offers a gentle reminder to readers that it isn’t always necessary to listen to the world’s criticisms.

Odile Weulersse is a French author who has written numerous books for children, many of which focus on retelling old legends and stories for a young audience. She lives in France and teaches film at the Sorbonne.

Rébecca Dautremer is a French illustrator who has brought many stories to life with her rich and whimsical art, including The Secret Lives of Princesses (Sterling) and Swing Café (The Secret Mountain).www.rebeccadautremer.com

Christopher Sat StraightUp in Bed

Written by Kathy Long Illustrated by Patricia Cantor

It’s the middle of the night, but try as hard as he might, Christopher can’t sleep. He keeps hearing a noise thundering through the house: HONK SHOO! Could it be an elephant trumpeting outside his win- dow? Or a bear in his closet? Maybe it’s a dinosaur stomping down the street! Christopher gathers up all his courage, and readers follow close behind as he tiptoes down the hall to find out where the noise is coming from . . .

Kathy Long is the author of five published titles, including The Runaway Shopping Cart (Dutton) and God is Near (Augsburg Fortress). Kathy lives in Missouri.

Patricia Cantor was an award-winning illustrator and a teacher of art at California State University–Fullerton and California State University–Long Beach until her un-timely death in 2012. She previously published Sleeping Bootsie with Random House.

I Wish I Had . . .Written by Giovanna Zoboli

Illustrated by Simona Mulazzani

With its sharp eyes, the blackbird sees every blade of grass in the meadow. The wings of the wild goose carry it far away. And the song of the whale fills the wide ocean. Each animal has skills and beauty wholly unique to itself. And in this unusual book, a child becomes lost in the wonder of the animal world. Giovanna Zoboli’s lyrical text, complemented by Simona Mulazzani’s bright and alluring illustrations, will charm readers with its sense of beauty and awe.

Giovanna Zoboli is an Italian author and editor who has written several award-winning books for young readers. Giovanna lives in Italy.

Simona Mulazzani is an international children’s book illustrator. She has won a number of awards for her work and has illustrated over 60 children’s and adult books. She also lives in Italy.

The Chickens Build a WallWritten and illustrated by Jean-François Dumont

At the farm, the chickens are building a wall — though no one is quite sure why. But they know one thing: the hedgehog that wandered in must be trouble. So all winter they build and build. When spring comes around, the chickens discover that they haven’t been as effective at keeping the hedgehog out as they thought, and that maybe their prickly visitor isn’t as dangerous as they thought, either. This amusing tale, with its colorful and appealing illustrations, creates a perfect space to ask some profound questions about fear and the ways we view strangers.

Jean-François Dumont is a French author and illustrator who has created many stories for children, including A Blue So Blue (Sterling), winner of the 2004 Prix Saint-Exupéry, an award given yearly to the best illustrated picture book in France.

A Girl Called ProblemWritten by Katie Quirk

Thirteen-year-old Shida, whose name means “problem” in Swa-hili, certainly has an abundance of problems in her life: her father is dead, her depressed mother is rumored to be a witch, her family bears the weight of a curse, and everyone in her rural Tanzanian vil-lage expects her to marry, rather than pursue her dream of becoming a healer. So when the elders make a controversial decision to move the people to a nearby village, Shida welcomes the change. Surely the opportunity to go to school and learn from the new village nurse can only mean good things!

However, when the new village has a series of puzzling misfortunes, the people become convinced that they’ve made the wrong decision in moving. Nonetheless, Shida is determined to prove to the villagers that they can have a better life in their new home.

Katie Quirk is a teacher and first-time author. She wrote A Girl Called Problem after living and teaching in Tanzania for two years, and she is now working on a memoir about raising her oldest son in India. Katie currently lives in Maine.

Bully.comWritten by Joe Lawlor

Seventh grader Jun Li is a brilliant student, more comfortable around computers than people. But his world turns upside down when the principal accuses him of posting pictures on the school’s website that expose the eating disorder of one of his classmates. To prove his innocence, Jun has seven days to track down the true cyberbully.

Jun’s investigation brings him face-to-face with computer hack-ers, a jealous boyfriend, and more than one student who has been a victim of bullying. He discovers along the way that everyone’s story is more complicated than it seems — and that the people he meets have more in common than they think. With likeable characters and a fast-paced plot, Bully.com offers a compelling look at the consequences of cyberbullying.

Now It Is SummerWritten by Eileen Spinelli Illustrated by Mary Newell DePalma

A young mouse looks forward to everything that autumn will bring, but his mother gently reminds him of all the summery joys surrounding him and all the reasons to be content in the moment.

“As apt for bedtime reading as for providing reassurance to impatient young mouselings that present joys will indeed in time give way to future ones.”

— Kirkus Reviews

“DePalma’s nicely detailed acrylic paintings create an effective visual counterpoint to Spinelli’s well-chosen words and evocative images expressing the little mouse’s dreams of fall. A good choice for reading aloud at the beginning of school.”
