MORE THAN 80 YEARS OF SCREEN PRINTINGFlat glass screen print-ing technology is part of Cugher Glass’s DNA; the company, in fact, has been providing high technol-ogy solutions to the auto-motive, architectural and home appliance markets for over 40 years.Cugher designs and manufactures standalone machines and complete printing lines, integrating technologies for automa-tion and process control, as well as for the handling and storing of fi nished prod-ucts, UV, IR and combined dryers, vision and quality control systems for print-ing and glass.Cugher machines and plants always have very high production standards: print precision, perfect re-peatability, speed, and op-timization of processes are all essential prerogatives of production.On-site after sales activi-ties are a key business for many companies, espe-cially in the automation and mechanical engineer-ing fi elds, where non-stop plant operation is an essen-tial requirement. The de-velopment of technologies and the relocation of pro-ductions that distinguish the contemporary indus-try have, however, led to a change of route within the activities of after sales sup-port.

Active in the glass screen printing market for over 80 years, in this article Cugher Glass takes our readers ‘behind the scenes’ with regards to production: based on quality, of course – but not only. In fact, the services the company provides go beyond the sale of a machine, with after-sales being a key part of Cugher’s business.

W alking the fl oor of the Vitrum 2017 exhibition in Milan, the Dip-Tech booth instantly captures at-tention with an array of glass panels showcasing the quality of their digital printers, and with a live demon-stration of their GPi printer. The speed of these machines has to be seen to fully be appreciated, with two operators

swapping a pair of glass panels quite rapidly and printing a variety of art designs to demonstrate the machine’s diverse range of colours. In the time it takes one operator to clean wet ink off of one panel, the printer has already completed the other panel and sits idly waiting for the next job. In an industry where speed is of extreme importance, it cannot be

overstated that Dip-Tech’s printers are blazingly fast. The booth and all promo-tional materials display “A Ferro Company,” the result of Dip-Tech’s acquisition by Ferro Corporation in August 2017. Knowing this is an important milestone for the company, Glass-Technology International sat with Dip-Tech Manag-ing Director Alon Lumbro-so and Marketing Manager Shirley Segev to discuss the partnership with Ferro and the benefi ts of their new relationship.Asking how the acquisition will affect their business, Alon said, “For me per-sonally and for Dip-Tech, I think it’s a very good move. I was busy with this trans-action for quite a while, and we put a lot of effort to make it happen together with Ferro’s management,

because we believe that for Dip-Tech, and Dip-Tech’s customers, this step is very important.”The fi rst benefi t mentioned is the ability to expand Dip-Tech’s portfolio of products. Alon said, “Ferro is an ex-pert in all the raw materi-als that are part of our inks, having their experience, their thousands of products in this area, allows us to pick the right products from their portfolio and develop new inks for our customers.”Ferro’s already extensive line of materials has re-cently been bolstered by ac-quisitions of Endeka Group and Gardenia Quimica, which were also added to the company’s expanding portfolio. These additions will undoubtedly also aid Dip-Tech in developing new inks for their printers. (The Endeka acquisition is ex-

pected to close before the end of the year).Perhaps a more important facet of the acquisition is Dip-Tech gaining the clout of a parent company. Speaking on this benefi t, Alon said, “Ferro has of-fi ces in 28 countries and over 5,000 employees, so together we can do much more across the global market. Dip-Tech is a rela-tively small company with 110 employees and it is quite challenging to evolve over the 60 countries we are now selling in. With Ferro, it will be much, much easier.“Additionally, there is the credit we have in dealing with our prospects. We are talking to glass proces-sors who have more con-fi dence now to buy from us because they’ve known Ferro for a long time. They appreciate Ferro as a pro-fessional company, very stable, very strong, and now that Dip-Tech is part of Ferro platform, it’s a strong reference. So they feel more confi dent to buy equipment from us.”Already, having the clout of Ferro has had a positive benefi t for Dip-Tech. Alon said, “I just spoke with our agent in Spain about a cer-tain prospect that we have been in touch with for a while. Now our agent up-dated me that since we are part of Ferro, it will help him to make a decision since he has known Ferro for many years.”To help Ferro work more

effectively with Dip-Tech, the company has begun training Ferro employees. Just before Vitrum 2017, Dip-Tech hosted a training seminar for Ferro teams from Italy, France, Turkey and Spain, and they plan to host more seminars to help Ferro understand what Dip-Tech offers and their advantages, and what its vision for the future is. Training has already been completed for Ferro’s North America and Asia branches, and over the next year, more teams will be brought in, allowing them to work together more ef-fectively.The relationship also has benefi ts for Ferro. “Dip-Tech is very different from the other companies Ferro has recently acquired. They are materials companies, and we are the only com-pany within Ferro that is selling capital equipment. It’s a completely differ-ent business when you sell materials. You sell, you get the money in thirty days, done deal. For us, it’s completely different. Sales cycles might reach two to three years. Once the or-der is received, we build the machine for the cus-tomer. We test the machine before shipping it to them, then install it. We manage training sessions, technical support, spare parts service and much more. We con-sider ourselves married to that customer for life and we want this marriage to succeed. It’s a new busi-42

16 October is an im-portant date for Pilkington Italia, the Venice community and the entire Regione Veneto. The fi rst steps in the pro-cedure for starting up the new fl oat glass furnace were taken at a formal cer-emony at the Porta Margh-era plant. The plant is ex-pected to produce its fi rst glass in November. The new system is located in the historic Pilkington works in Porta Marghera, Venice where glass was fi rst produced in far off 1932, and which saw the introduction of the Pilking-ton fl oat glass technology in 1987. Following a ma-jor overhaul in 2002, work continued until 2012 when production was suspended. The new plant will make considerable use of exist-ing facilities.Production will be approxi-mately 630 tons of fl oat glass per day and the new furnace will be able to pro-duce the innovative Pilk-ington Optiwhite™. This exceptional product is an extremely clear fl oat glass obtained by the care-ful selection of raw materi-als with very low iron oxide content to give it particu-larly high transparency and light transmission, which make it suitable to the cur-

For this particular product, it has been necessary to carry out signifi cant reno-vation not only of the fu-sion furnace itself but also of the entire production line in order to maintain and strengthen the leader-ship position across the full range of products based on Pilkington Optiwhite™.Production of the Pilking-ton Optilam™ range of laminated safety glass will be maintainedThe signifi cant investment (in excess of 18 million) that NSG Group has car-ried out is a clear indica-tion of their confi dence in the existing productive capability of this region, and of the short and along term economic prospects. An important part of the investment will consist of the installation of systems

of control of atmospheric emissions, in full compli-ance with environmental legislation, and reaffi rm-ing the high standard of safety and environmental health in company plants completely in tune with the mission of NSG Group as a sustainable company Throughout its history, Venice has been one of the fundamental centres of the glass industry because of its fl eet of merchant vessels that today as much as yes-terday still link it with plac-es producing raw materials, because of its mercantile enterprise, but above all be-cause of technical abilities in this fi eld that have come to the fore here more than anywhere else. For this purpose there are in course – shortly to be fi nalised – moves to take on approximately 60 new trainees in addition to the recall of all 132 people who had been retained until 30th September on state-provid-ed short-time assistance. The management of Pilk-ington Italia in the persons of President Dr. Graziano Marcovecchio and General Manager Alexander Mi-chetti “would like to thank all those whose commit-ment have made achieving

this goal possible: the lo-cal, regional and national agencies that have sup-ported us, the trade-union representatives, but above all our workforce, who, by their sacrifi ces over the last fi ve years, have awaited this day between concern and hope, but who are now prepared, with pride and determination, to take on new challenges for their own futures and for the fu-ture of the plant. At the same time it is only right to remember that to-day is only the beginning and that from now begins the diffi cult part, keeping in mind how hard it is to re-main competitive and retain our place in the market in Italy, Europe and the world. We are convinced that the leadership and the work-ers of Porta Marghera will be equal to these chal-lenges, in the full knowl-edge that the will to work together and the ability to overcome diffi culties is the prescription to create and maintain the confi dence of shareholders. We shall look back on what has hap-pened today as a new start and celebrate it with joy, for our own future and for the future of the country in which we operate.”

NSG Group is one of the largest world-wide producers of glass and glass systems in three main busi-ness areas: Automotive, Building and Technical Glass. Today group NSG has production activities in approximately 30 countries on four continents and markets in approximately 105 countries. In the fi nancial year to 31 March 2017, the Group recorded a turnover of JPY 580.8 bn (approximately 4.88 bn) of which 38% was produced in Europe, 25% in Japan, 20% in North America and 17% in the rest of the world.

PRACTICES FOR ENHANCING THE ENERGY PROPERTIES OF INSULATING GLASS UNITS AND GAS ESCAPEToday’s glass products carry a wide range of elements enhancing their properties. One main property is the energy effi ciency

“K eeping pace with high performing insulating glass products is a strug-gle for quality control, especially when it comes to insulating gas retention. Glazing products today have higher and high-er performance needs, and the requirements for better products are growing steadily.”

    SparklikeQUALITY CONTROL

TO ENHANCE THE ENERGY PROPERTIES OF

    DOUBLE- AND TRIPLE-GLAZED INSULATING

    GLASS UNITS

L A S E R T E C H N O L O G Y This specialist article discusses insulating glass production and the different methods for quality control for double and triple glazed insulating glass units. New laser-based non-invasive testing method makes it possible to measure gas concentration on even the most complex insulating glass structures.

in both heated and cooled buildings. The energy properties can be enhanced with various methods, such as coatings, multiple glass layers and inserting a medium in between. The medium can be normal air, vacuum or specifi c gas – typically argon or krypton. These insulating gases are applied to the cavity either during the manufactur-ing process at gas press

station, or manually to the ready-made units. The challenges are confi rming the correct fi lling degree and ensuring that the ini-tial gas concentration will remain inside the insulating glass unit (IGU). A gas es-cape could occur from im-proper sealing of the IGU, and this needs to be tested prior to shipping the IG to customers. Product liability for the insulating glass and window suppliers can last several years after the ini-tial delivery of the product. Thus, insulating glass and window suppliers are look-ing ways to increase the se-curity of the gas fi ll.Even though clear stand-ards do not exist in all are-as, the industry and manu-facturers have formed best practices to produce high quality insulating glass. The fact that small mol-ecule gas is prone to leak-age is a challenge, and thus manufacturers aim to en-sure the maximum possible content of argon after the gas fi lling – typically 95 per cent and higher.

NON-INVASIVE VS. INVASIVE GAS CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENTThe actual argon measure-ment can be conducted either with an invasive or non-invasive method. The invasive method penetrates through the sealing of the insulating glass unit and the gas sample is calculated automatically. These invasive technolo-gies are generally afford-able and robust technolo-gies with good accuracy, but require breaking the IG structure. In practice this

means that the IGU cannot be delivered to the custom-er or retested. The non-invasive method allows measuring the glass without breaking the IGU. The most commonly used non-invasive method uti-lizes a spark that is ignited through the glass. Based on the colour of the ionized gas, the argon content is cal-culated automatically. This method is fast and accurate and used widely on double-glazed units as measuring can be carried out from monolithic glass side for the non-coated surfaces. The

F ollowing a very brief period of insolvency after the company fell into fi nancial diffi culties, the 17 employ-ees of boraident in Halle an der Saale (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) can breathe a sigh of relief. The HEGLA Group, headquartered in Beverungen, North Rhine-Westphalia,

HEGLA’s recent takeover of boraident has not only secured the jobs of the employees of boraident, but will also expand the know-how and expertise of the two companies. The new company - HEGLA boraident – will continue with ongoing projects, ensuring the same services to customers.

LINKED BY THEIR EXPERTISE IN GLASS

The foundation of HEGLA boraident will secure the future of 17 jobs in what was formerly

boraident, as well as its laser know-how. Mutually satisfi ed with

of Sales, HEGLA boraident), Dr. Thomas Rainer (Head of

    Technology, HEGLA boraident), Bernhard Hötger

(COO, HEGLA Beverungen and HEGLA Kretzschau) (f.l.t.r.)

    HEGLA AND boraident

Germany (with approx. 550 employees worldwide), took over the site on 5 October 2017. All current employees and patents will be incorporated into the newly founded HEG-LA boraident GmbH & Co. KG. There is also good news for former boraident customers: the company’s services,

consulting and ongoing projects will continue un-changed, as will the prod-uct portfolio. In addition, customers’ familiar points of contact will remain avail-able as usual.

EXPERTISE IN GLASSThe two companies are linked by their expertise in glass. Since 2004, they have collaborated on sev-eral customer projects, thereby expanding their know-how. As specialists in mechanical engineering, for over 40 years HEGLA has been a market leader and technological pioneer in glass storage, loading, cutting, residual sheet han-dling, and sorting. Since the company was founded in 2000, boraident has spe-cialised in the laser mark-ing, structuring and func-tionalisation of glass. The company’s product range also includes technical ap-plications and products for identifying machine-read-able codes, as well as the laser-assisted production of glass diaphragms and test systems in the glass sensors division.HEGLA CEO Jochen H. Hesselbach, stresses that boraident’s many years of knowledge and exper-tise in laser technology for glass can be retained in the new subsidiary, and sees a bright future for the new di-vision. “We have known the boraident team for many years, and have enjoyed an extremely constructive, partnership-oriented, inno-

vative working relationship with them,” he emphasises.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE NEW COMPANYIn the run-up to the foun-dation of the new compa-ny, Dr. Johann Dorner and Dr. Thomas Rainer held talks with HEGLA on be-half of boraident. “Against the backdrop of rapidly growing orders, we are looking forward to a secure future with a strong part-ner. HEGLA will support us with new sales channels and additional glass know-how, and will create the framework conditions to further optimise the posi-tion of our products in the market,” say Dr. Dorner and Dr. Rainer with great conviction. Both experts will also hold central posi-tions in the new company.According to HEGLA COO Bernhard Hötger, custom-ers of HEGLA will also benefi t from the new sub-sidiary’s solutions. “The fi rst step will be offering the option of machine-readable, material friendly laser mark-ing for our cutting systems. In the second step, the laser technology will allow us to get a lot closer to our vision of Industry 4.0,” explains Bernhard Hötger. The con-sistent use of laser marking on glass not only means that each sheet can be clearly identifi ed at any time: “We can also fully digitise the entire production process, and consign it to each sheet of glass. This means that we can directly control the cut-

ting process via the product, and can thus decentralise the process,” says the long-standing COO. Another as-pect of HEGLA’s strategy is also evident: thanks to the new company’s enhanced laser know-how, further de-velopments in the laser-fi lm cutting of laminated safety glass can also be expected more quickly. It was agreed that the amount of the takeover bid should remain confi -dential.

M a n f r e d V o l l b r a c h t r e t i r e sAfter more than 41 years of active involvement, HEGLA Managing Director Manfred Vollbracht has retired shortly before his 66th birthday. “At some point you have to ask yourself what life after work might look like, and when that time has come,” he said, explaining his decision. For more than two years, Vollbracht has been setting the course for his exit from the company’s top position in conjunction with his Management Board colleague, Bernhard Hötger. In addition, Vollbracht will continue to provide the company with consulting services, and will assist the sales team with ongoing projects during the transitional phase.Vollbracht personally thanked all his staff with a summer party, praising the performance of the entire team. The Managing Director was himself one of the company’s fi rst employees. Since it was founded in 1976, the increasing amount of responsibility bestowed on Vollbracht played a signifi cant role in the company’s success. Today, the internationally active group of companies is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of machinery for the storage, loading, cutting, sorting and residual handling of glass, as well as glass transport racks for transporters and trucks. Sales in 2016 amounted to more than EUR 76 million. Until recently, as Managing Director, Vollbracht was responsible for overall sales and the company’s marketing. On behalf of HEGLA’s shareholders and the entire company, the Chairman of the Management Board, Jochen H. Hesselbach, thanked Mr. Vollbracht for his long-term commitment and for his hugely successful contributions to the growth and sustainable development of the company. “During your lengthy period of involvement, you were a major contributor in turning this small factory producing machinery and equipment for the fl at glass processing industry into a global player,” stressed Hesselbach during the summer party. “We wish you all the best, and hope that you enjoy as much success and happiness in your further life plans as you have done up to this point. HEGLA will remember you and your achievements fondly.”The existing leadership team of Jochen H. Hesselbach, Bernhard Hötger and Hans-Peter Löhner will be joined by graduate engineer Gerd Schreier (Dipl.-Ing.). “Thanks to Mr. Schreier’s many years of international experience, he is the ideal complement to the existing members of the HEGLA Management Board. He brings with him all the prerequisites to develop HEGLA beyond the important internal market and into the world,” stated Hesselbach.40

V itrum 2017, the 20th edition of the show, paid off for the Fenzi Group with a huge turnout of Italian and international visitors inter-ested in the many innova-tions on display. In the words of Alessandro Fenzi, the Group’s CEO: “Vitrum has proven itself to be a key event for us, ca-pable of attracting visitors from across Europe and overseas. With 19 success-

ful editions to its credit, Vitrum’s specialization al-lows it to focus in-depth on the most current areas of interest and to provide excellent opportunities for doing business with highly-qualifi ed industry profes-sionals”. All the Business Units were distinctly represented at the show, starting with Side Kinetix, the latest technol-ogy in digital printing in-troduced by Tecglass – the

Spanish fi rm that joined the Fenzi Group last year. Side Kinetix is an innova-tion that has had a unique impact on the market – by changing the print direc-tion on the glass, it ensures customers the advantage of greater production speed and effi ciency. The Tempver Automotive line of enamels for the automo-tive industry is the latest breakthrough in the glass enamels Business Unit. It

Fenzi Group’s innovative technology applied to chemicals for flat glass processing took centre stage at this year’s Vitrum events. From latest-generation coatings to digital printing, Fenzi offers a broad range of complete solutions for the international glass industry.

Fenzi Groupis an initial, key develop-ment in a journey begun last year that is already richly rewarding the Fenzi Group. Innovations also reign in the mirror-backing paints Business Unit which, in 1941, began leading the company to success and recently marked another milestone – the comple-

tion of the Luxver range with a line of products that spans the entire glass silvering process and strengthens Fenzi’s posi-tion as a global partner for all mirror manufacturers. The insulating glass divi-sion, the largest in terms of size and revenue, is invest-ed daily in the ongoing de-velopment of sealants and

high-performance warm edge spacers for IG units, products capable of meet-ing the most restrictive standards set for the most cutting-edge systems. “By focusing on the needs of the glass industry, we are able to offer high-tech products that consistently meet market demand for high-quality products –

continues Fenzi. – We were pleased to note that our customers at the show were favorably impressed with the innovations on display”.

SIDE KINETIX: DIGITAL PRINTING ON GLASS CHANGES DIRECTIONTecglass makes printing on large glass sheets faster than ever. With the Vitro Jet F Type Side Kinetix model, the head moves crosswise to the print carriage. This changes everything: even with glass sizes larger than the carriage, it’s possible to consistently print in the di-rection of the long side of the glass; that is, in the eas-iest and fastest manner. A truly unique technology for an even more versatile ma-chine, one that dramatically increases print effi ciency. The advantages of the Vit-ro Jet F Type Range: 64

O n the route be-tween the two Spanish cities Sevilla and Córdoba the headquarters of Astiglass are located. Astiglass of-fers effi cient solutions for architecture, engineering and interior decorating. It is fully in the hands of the family Aliaga, the brothers Manuel and Lorenzo and their sister Maria Jesús took over the company management from their fa-ther in 2005.On a production area of more than 26,000 square metres they produce double glazing, tempered, lami-nated, coated and fi reproof glass elements, as well as decoration and serigraphy.

“In the fi eld of fl at glass processing we can do eve-rything that is possible. We offer glass elements in large dimensions, up to 6,000 x 3,210 millimetres, which is exceptional for Spain,” says Manuel Aliaga, General Manager of Astiglass. The company’s cooperation with LiSEC began in the year 2000, when it chose LiSEC not only because of well-known technology and quality, but also because of the good cooperation and technical service LiSEC gives.

QUALITYTo match their slogan ‘trans-parent quality’ Astiglass puts emphasis on getting

their products certifi ed. The global ISO 9001, together with their personal com-

mitment to quality, ensure an added guarantee to their clients. Especially for the

LiSEC based in Hausmening/Amstetten is a globally active group, which has been offering innovative individual and overall solutions in the fi eld of processing and refi ning of fl at glass for more than 50 years. LiSEC’s service portfolio comprises machines, automation solutions and services. In 2016, the group with its approximately 1,200 employees and more than 20 locations generated an aggregate turnover of about 230 million Euros at an export rate of more than 90 percent. LiSEC develops and produces glass cutting and sorting systems, individual components and entire production lines for the production of insulating and laminated glass as well as machines for the processing of glass edges and tempering systems. With a reliable technology and intelligent automation solutions, LiSEC sets standards in terms of quality and technology and makes a substantial contribution to the success of its customers.

French market they got the CEKAL certifi cation. Maria Jesús Aliaga emphasizes the importance of getting certi-fi ed: “We are always eager to get certifi cates for our prod-ucts which are an added val-ue for the different markets we serve. We can provide the best quality with the ele-ments we produce with our LiSEC machines.”

MARKETSAstiglass’ export rate amounts to 40 per cent. They have had projects, among others, in Germany, Russia and the Netherlands but the main external mar-ket they serve is Panama. Due to the economic crisis in 2008 they had to fi nd new business opportunities, so they established an offi ce in Panama to approach the Latin American market in 2013. “One of our diversi-fi cation strategies is to enter new markets internationally. The more markets, the bet-ter,” states Manuel Aliaga.

COMMUNICATION“In order to fulfi l the needs of our customers better, structural internal commu-nication is what we focus on. It is essential to us, to have close relationships with our customers; the same applies to our coop-

eration with LiSEC: We appreciate the direct and close contact with LiSEC and also their geographical proximity. If an important issue occurs, they are able to respond very quickly,” the owners agree on the importance of a compre-hensive communication.

PROJECTSFrom shopping malls to prisons, hospitals and airports, Astiglass has a large range of references in Spain and many other countries. They were in-volved in the construction of one of the Hilton Hotels in Mexico, shops of the In-didex group in all Europe and the sport centre of Real Madrid just to name a few of them. The project which they are most proud of is the construction of the Ne-vada Shopping Center in Granada, which opened in 2016 after two years build-ing time. All the glass was provided by Astiglass.

INNOVATIONFor the building of struc-tural façades made of glass, Astiglass changed the sealing depth of the IG units from 11 millimetres standard to 21 millimetres. In order to make this pos-sible, LiSEC modifi ed the

sealing robot VL-1N half a year ago. Due to the deep-er sealing, aluminium or silicon joints can be posi-tioned, which signifi cantly improves the acoustic in-sulation of the breaks and provides additional tight-ening features.

FUTUREThe company is well aware that glass is more and more used for construction, both indoor and outside. The required size of glass sheets is increasing, along with the demand for solar, sound and fi re proof ele-ments. “We have big plans for our company to grow. LiSEC is an important part of our future develop-ments. We count on LiSEC for helping us realize our growth plans, says Manuel Aliaga enthusiastically.

The twentieth edition of Vitrum concluded on Friday 6th Octo-ber 2017, which brought to an end four days entire-ly dedicated to the world of glass, the machinery of the sector, and its applica-tions. In addition to nor-mal exhibition business, intensive off-stand activ-ity was distributed over B2B encounters, cultural moments, and high-level meetings between experts in the fi eld and institution-al representatives.“Our satisfaction is that of our Exhibitors and our Visitors. These four days have been intense, and from today on we shall continue even more in the consolidation of the goals already achieved and the pursuit of new possibilities for the future of the fi eld”,

declared Vitrum President Dino Zandonella Necca, in his closing address. “Our operators, seminar meetings, and collateral

activities such as the ex-hibition ‘Interpretazioni d’autore – Glass Experi-ences’, have been the true “jewels in the crown” of

this edition. The inter-est shown in the actual machinery exhibited on the stands has been high, confi rming that Vitrum is

a fair that really can make a difference, as is also evi-denced by the attention shown by the foreign press this year over all four days of the fair”, emphasised Laura Biason, Director of Vitrum.Between 3rd and 6th Octo-ber 2017, Vitrum attracted to Milan the best of the glass working world from all fi ve continents: from the United States, Europe, South America, the Far East, and Africa. A particu-lar success was the partici-pation – organised with the invaluable support of ICE Agency (the Italian Trade Agency) – of 109 prime fl at- and hollow-glass op-erators from 12 different countries.“But in a fair so interna-tional by its very nature – concluded the President Zandonella Necca – we are proud to record the positive return of the Ital-ian public, in confi rmation of the reawakening of the Italian market, a resur-gence which has surely been hastened by the fi nan-cial incentives provided by the Government through the Industry 4.0 National Plan, a program to which we have made a contribu-

    I N T E R V I E W W I T H V I T R U M D I R E C T O R During Vitrum 2017 Glassonline had the opportunity to speak with Vitrum Director Laura Biason, who expressed satisfaction with the results of the fair and shared some thoughts on the next edition

CHANGING TIMESAs the shutters closed on Vitrum 2017, exhibitors and visitors said it had been a good fair, “much better than expected.”These positive views were also echoed by Laura Biason, Director of Vitrum, who has been engaged in the organization of the fair over the last two years. According to Ms Biason, this successful result has been achieved against a background of increasingly rapid change in the global fair environment; because of developments in global networking, many functions of the traditional trade fair have changed and there has been unprecedented growth in direct channels of communication between suppliers and clients – these developments have to be taken into consideration and integrated with other kinds of information exchange. New companies are opening up new markets and new technologies are changing the landscape of the industry, Vitrum is keeping abreast of these new areas of interest and gauging their impact on the market, continued Ms Biason. NEW STRATEGIESMs Biason underlined that the new global perspective calls for a new strategy for Vitrum involving more players on a larger canvas and increasing its ability to compete directly with the established major fairs by involving an ever wider circle of companies. The proposal by Vitrum President Dino Zandonella Necca at the Murano summit meeting this summer to set up links with other national associations to increase collaboration and cooperation on areas of mutual interest was warmly welcomed and strongly supported by international glass associations, she explained.Such contacts have already borne fruit in the run-up to Vitrum 2017 and will have even more impact on the next edition by extending the area of interest into more specifi c industrial sectors, she promised.A special effort was also made in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency to select and attract signifi cant buyers from the international market and this brought extremely positive results.Everybody noticed visitors using the social networks to comment on stands and products and felt that this also contributed to wider visibility for the event and added extra cross-linking between exhibitors and visitors during the fair.Exhibitors were impressed by the quality of visitors, she underlines, and although the fi gures are not yet fi nal, pre-registrations were up four times on the number for the previous fair, with a huge increase in registered access on the fi rst two days.Another big success was the seminar program, with a wide offer of 4 different workshops, she noted, proving that good content ensures good results; this also helped in networking, where systems can be set up and people can fi nd out more about each other and form interlocking relationships.Considering economic trends in general and export of machinery worldwide, Laura Biason said she was very happy to see an increase in trade this year between exhibiting companies and Africa, the Gulf states, Iran, and the Mediterranean basin countries.

FUTURE PROSPECTSIn the Director’s opinion, one area for development for the 2019 edition will be hollow glass, a very signifi cant industry which has chosen to be present at Vitrum in recent years. Despite this, interest shown at both Vitrun 2015 and 2017 indicates the consumer attractiveness of the products, and suggests a market demand for more information on the state of innovation, technical solutions and customization possibilities offered by the full range of production. For the future, she expected to see continued emphasis on collaboration with national associations and operators, and new sectors being opened for 2019, together with the development of new materials which can be worked using glass processing machinery. She felt confi dent that these goals would be achieved through working closely with the whole supply chain and related services such as press and advertising.

At Vitrum 2017, OMV Vismara, well-known specialized company for the production of drills and mills for flat glass, focussed on the debut of its new vertical drill-mill, which differs consi-dereably from the classic machines of this type on the market right now both from OMV Vismara and from other machinery manufacturers. VERTI 4.0 is, in fact, a completely in-novative patented system, which ena-bles easy processing using a machine with smaller dimensions, but process-ing the same sized glass. This important characteristic is made possible thanks to the fact that it is no longer the glass that moves during milling, but the portal – which moves and processes the entire perimeter of the glass. This enables to process large-sized glass sheets (i.e. 5,000 x 1,600mm) on a machine that is just over 6 metres long.VERTI 4.0 is indicated particularly for the processing of glass doors, shower enclosures and balustrades, and can

    OMV VISMARA

INNOVATIVE VERTICAL MILLING MACHINEprocess round-shaped glass, as well as mirrors of thicknesses up to 4 mm).The machine can be installed in-line with other machines such as (grinders and washing machines) and can also be equipped with automatic loading and unloading devices. The idea of this innovative machine came about, above all, from the fre-quent client requests for a machine able to process large-sized glass with a ma-chine that occupies a small floor-space.In the more advanced version of the machine, the zero point of the item to be process is carried out automati-cally by means of a sensor on the drill head. Once identified the zero point, it enables to read labels with barcodes and QR codes.

Glass for Europe’s members, which manufacture and transform flat glass to make advanced energy saving technologies available to the build-ing sector, welcome the positive signal that the European Parliament’s ITRE Committee has sent today by amending the European Commission proposal for the Energy Performance of Building Directive.“With the ITRE committee vote, the debate on an EPBD reform propos-ing measures commensurate with the challenge of building renovation is at last starting,” said Bertrand Cazes, Secretary General of Glass for Europe. “The European Commission proposal had to be substantially improved and refocused to enable the massive trans-formation Europe’s buildings urgently need and the ITRE committee did precisely that.”Glass for Europe welcomes in par-

EXPECTED REFORM TO MAKE EPBD FIT FOR PURPOSEticular the introduction of a defini-tion of a decarbonised building stock based on the NZEB principle and the integration of renovation strategies into the Member States’ long-term strategies which must include clear milestones and actions. The broad majority which voted in favour of the report within the ITRE committee bodes well in view of trilogue negotia-tions and the plenary vote.“The report safeguards the energy efficiency first principle by limit-ing the initial proposal’s trade-offs between energy saving technologies and renewables”, added Bertrand Cazes. Glass for Europe hopes that

the restored EPBD ambition in the ITRE report will prevail in the future negotiations with Member States. “It is now the opportunity for the EU to equip itself with a powerful instrument to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions while fostering eco-nomic growth and contributing to the alleviation of energy poverty”, he concluded. As final decisions remain to be taken, the Council will have a huge responsibility in delivering the right policy framework for Europe to boost renovation and deliver on the promises of the COP21 agreement.

Glaston has closed a deal with US-based Manko Windows Systems for a FC Series™ tempering furnace and ProL™ lamination line. The order was received in several parts, most of the value in the second quarter and the re-maining in the third quarter. The lines will be delivered to the customer by the end of this year. Founded in 1989, Manko Windows Systems has three manufacturing locations, and provides high end aluminium windows, curtain wall, and insulated glass, among others. In 2002, Manko purchased it first two Glaston tempering lines. Manko and Glaston continued their long partner-ship in 2015, with the delivery of two FC Series™ tempering lines, and then a third line in 2016. This new FC Series™ furnace will

mark the fourth FC machine to be delivered. All four lines have the iLook Distortion™ online measuring system, and this latest line will come with the new iLook Anisotropy™ online scanning system that visualizes and quantifies the level of anisotropy or iridescence in heat-treated glass thus giving the processor a tool to continu-ously monitor quality and improve production methods. Along with this new FC Series™, Manko has also placed an order for the state of the art ProL™ flat glass lamination line. The ProL™ laminating furnace’s convection system provides accurate and optimized heat transfer. This gives consistently superb glass quality and an up to 100% capacity in-crease over traditional infrared heating. “From the very beginning, Manko has

been able to continually grow their business by providing their custom-ers with a tremendous product. They have consistently invested in industry leading technology. They continue to do this, not only with their fourth FC Series™ furnace, but also with the new ProL™ lamination line,” says Scott Steffy, VP Sales and Service, Glaston America. “We are driven to provide our custom-ers with high quality, on-time prod-ucts, through our P&D, and cutting edge equipment. Our long standing partnership with Glaston, built with top end machinery, and exceptional service, enables us to do just this. The glass quality is also exceptional, and the energy savings are even higher than expected,” says Gary Jones, President, Manko Windows Systems.

“As thin glass produc-tion is quite complex and

expensive, we offer technologies which minimize the glass reject at the cold end while providing top-notch quality right from the beginning,” says Werner Rührer, Glass Sales Manager at Grenzebach; A challenging task, with glass thinner than a sheet of paper that is very instable and can easily. In order to safely handle sheets of 0.2 to 1.1 millimetres, Grenzebach lines work with very nar-row roller-ring spacing so the glass won’t bend too much during conveyance. For this purpose, the rings have to provide a precise concentric run.”With production speeds of 6 to 15 meters per minute, the Grenzebach measuring system FPI float st&th executes continuous strain and thickness measurements while meas-uring width and temperature of the glass at the same time. “The tolerances in thin glass production are very small but with our measuring system, the producers are on the safe side,” explains Werner Rührer. The Grenzebach defect scanner FPI float vision reveals defects in or on the glass in real time. Inclusions and optical distortions are classified and allow a high transparency and product analysis.Thin glass lines produce 30 to 300 tons of thin glass per day. The cutting equipment at the cold end is the impor-tant core of the automated line and where Grenzebach

sets new standards. Length- and cross-wise cutting sys-tems rely on field-proven Grenzebach cutting heads. The electromagnetic cutting force controllers allow accurate cutting force adjustment. The newly developed closed-loop controller makes the process even more accurate within fractions of a second.More special features of the Grenzebach thin glass production lines include: Special edge trim conveyor for controlled glass edge snapping, contact-less alignment using sensors in order to avoid glass scrap, and the Inline Sheet Inspection FSP G10 for the inspection of shape and sheet size as well as edge evaluation.Information, conversation, communication, and interac-tion: If thin glass is manufactured for specialty products, we must have clean room conditions in the environment. There is barely any dust in the manufacturing hall. The use of a blowing and suction device eliminates even the smallest particles produced when the glass is scored and snapped. Special-purpose crushers are completely encap-sulated and are equipped with a suction system. At the end of the line: stacking with a robot. The robots with special suction frames sort the glass for air-tin-side stacking with respect to quality and position in the endless glass ribbon onto several rack locations. In the case of thin glass, paper inter-layers are used in order to avoid potential damages. Grenzebach has automated the pro-cess for paper application. If requested, the manufacturer can apply his logo to every thin glass sheet. The code is applied to the glass sheets during the production process with the DMC laser mark-ing system. This allows identification of every single sheet, and the manufacturing information is directly supplied with the product.
