The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badinghamby the Badingham Community Council

    Registered Charity No. 274549

The Editor’s decision on whether or where to place material is final. Whileevery effort is made to check information published, the BCC does notendorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine.

    E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorLast time I was writing about snowdrops and now there is beautifulblossom everywhere. The weeks have been racing past and we’ve hadthe fun of the Beetle Drive, the Neal’s Yard party and the Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks to Patricia for bringing her bunny over to meet us.Soon it will be the Summer Fete - do join us if you can, the more themerrier! If you can lend a hand, that would be much appreciated too.The Echo is mainly financed by our advertisers, so please give them yoursupport when you can.One more date for your diary - 28th June is National Unplugging Day. (It’salso the date of Morning Chorus’ concert in the church - see separate slip). We’re being encouraged to put down our smartphones, tablets andcomputers for 24 hours to experience life unplugged.I spend more than enough time checking in on my work phone but, scarily,a recent study found the ‘average’ parent uses their smartphone 240times a day – on emails, texts and social media. That’s equivalent to fourhours every day. In fact, nearly half of parents surveyed are logging intoFacebook or other social media before doing anything else – eyes gluedto their phones even before getting out of bed or seeing to the kids!If you manage to take a break from technology, let me know what youget up to so we can share ideas of places to go and things to do withother readers in the August issue of the Echo.

    Good Health, Tish

BADINGHAMIt seems time has flown since the long winter months and we are all lookingforward to a warm and sunny summer.

Summer FeteThis year’s fete will again be held at Badingham White Horse by kindpermission of Lisa and Mark. We had such a good time last June with theparty atmosphere extending into the evening. We are hoping the weatherwill be as kind as last year – warm and sunny. It’s a lovely occasion formeeting friends and making new ones.

This is our major fund-raising event of the year so please come along andjoin in the fun. It will be the second year for our Bale Race, organised byRoger Pryke and Rob Welham – contact them for further details. We dohope we have lots of contestants.

The week prior to the fete a committee member will call to collect anycontributions you can make towards the tombola or raffle. We are extremelygrateful for your generosity and value your support.

Easter Egg HuntAs only a handful of children have taken part in recent years, we havedecided to give the Easter Egg Hunt a rest for the time being. A big thankyou to Sonja and Tish who organised this year’s activity and also to Patriciawho added a seasonal touch by taking her own Easter Bunny into thechurchyard for the children to enjoy.

DefibrillatorThank you to everyone who keeps an ‘eye’ on the defib. I haven’t heard ofanyone needing it so far – thank goodness!

    Jumble Sale Success

The Jumble Sale held in Village Hall onSaturday 2 May raised the fantastic sum of£334 for Hillside Sanctuary Equine Appeal.

It was a pity more villagers couldn't attend, but for the loyalregulars who supported or donated in different ways - a bigTHANK YOU!

A nice bonus was the folk who came from Loddon having seenthe event details on the village website, so it's well worth usingit to advertise your event.

    Patricia Grant

This proved to be a very enjoyable evening - thank you everyonewho helped, Caroline for the presentation and everyone who came

along to support. We raised £111.50 for the Village Hall.

    Ann Foster

Beetle DriveThank you everyone who came along and supported our Beetle Drive. Ihad no idea how many different versions of playing the game therewere!

It was a lively and fun evening with quite a lot of noise (someone listeningoutside said it sounded like the money changers in the Temple), someextremely artistic and imaginative beetles were drawn - sadly there wasno prize for the best only for the person scoring the highest number ofpoints and for the person scoring the lowest number of points.

We all enjoyed delicious refreshments and £254.50. was raised forchurch funds of which 10% will be donated to the Village Hall.

Thank you to all helpers - these things could not be done without you.Ann Foster on behalf of Badingham PCC.

A few weeks ago I hada phone call one dark evening from acoordinator who heard a house alarm. He checked around the garden and out-side of the house only to find NOLIGHTS ON – doesn’t this give thieves atarget to break in? On 4th Marchclose to Saxmundham a phone callclaimed there was a problem with a bank-card and a courier was being sent tocollect it. and, as well as the bikes, several toolswere stolen - including a Stihl hedgecutter, a pressure washer and two Stihlleafblowers.

Police are linking these incidents to thetheft of sunglasses and a torch from aPeugeot parked at The Street, Sternfieldand to several vehicle crime incidents inBenhall on the same night.

A TomTom sat nav, sunglasses andcash were stolen from the Peugeot, while two other vehicles were enteredand searched but nothing was stolen.Contact Suffolk Police on 101 and quotecrime number LE/15/416. You can alsocontact Crimestoppers, anonymously,on 0800 555 111.

Road Rage Incidents rise in SuffolkIncidents rose by nearly 50% in 2013and 2014. The most common situationswhich cause motorists to lose their tem-per are people driving unnecessarilyclose, being cut up on the road or beingstuck behind bicycles and tractors. Acci-dents have been caused through this. Iknow how one feels, just be patient - theroad is for everyone.

Tractor Speed LimitsIn March, the speed limit for tractors wasincreased by 5mph to 20mph. The maxi-mum combined weight limit for tractorsand trailers has also risen, from 24 to 31tonnes. It is hoped by this will go a longway towards making rural roads safer byreducing the amount of overtaking indangerous places. I am a bit concernedabout dangerous driving in Low Street,Mill Road, Bowling Green Road and ourlanes. I can assure you if there poordriving is observed, it will be reported. We have to think of the safety of cyclists, walkers, motorists and horse riders too.

Rogue TradersBill Simpson, a 57 year old rogue builderfrom Hinton, has been jailed after beingfound guilty of undertaking roof repairswithout permission. He had been askedo clear moss off of a roof and cleangutters. Simpson said the work wouldcost as much as £1100. In 2009 he wasconvicted of conning an elderly coupleout of £16,000 after repairing a brokenroof tile.

This case highlights the great work ofSuffolk Trading Standards working inpartnership with Suffolk Constabulary. This is not the first time I’ve heard of thistype of thing happening locally, pleasebe aware at all times.

If you have any concerns about a traderwho is working on your home, or aneighbour’s, contact Suffolk TradingStandards on 0345 040506.

Teenage risk: e-cigarettesDo you realise what goes into these? They are dangerous – they contain ahighly addictive drug. Although saferthan smoking, regularly inhaling nicotinecan cause brain damage while the brainis still growing. Hundreds of thousandsof young teenagers are usinge-cigarettes as a new recreational drug. They should be banned for healthreasons - and it smells horrible too.

Next issue: Crime Stoppers, how it works.

Have a great summer, enjoy your holi-days and come back safely. Lock upyour homes and leave timer lights on.

    HISTORIC FINDS IN BADINGHAM

Earlier this month a BAFTA was won by The Dectorists a BBCseries partly filmed in Framlingham. Here, Sonja writes aboutsome of Badingham’s historic finds. As we all know, metal-detecting is a popular hobby forthose who are honest and mindful of other people’sproperty. Yet others are quite the opposite and would takeit all, even without permission for going on the land.During the early 80s to late 90s we had two lovely men who were metaldetecting enthusiasts live in Badingham...Colin Ware and TerryMarsh. Colin lived in The Willows, Bowling Green Road and Terry lived atWayside, Low Street.Terry was most interested in history and very knowledgeable of all his finds- and if not, sure to find out from Archaeological Survey at Bury StEdmunds. But the most wonderful finds we had in Badingham were humanremains in a Low Street garden. It was first thought to be just one but waslater identified as being the remains of a man and a women, aged between25 and 35 years. The female was 5' 1", the male 5' 5". They were possiblyRoman and could have been from a Roman Cemetery on the Mound ofBurstonhaugh (the Church). Two thoughts on this is - the garden where they were found backs onto theChurchyard and there could possibly be more human remains from Romantimes. Also, while in some places it is now almost silted up, in times pastthe River Alde was navigable by boats through Badingham close to LowStreet. Perhaps one day further investigations will be made in the Church-yard, just beyond the present day hedge. I hope it happens in my time.In addition to all this, Badingham folk have made other finds in theirgardens: fossils around 60,000,000 years old, flint from the ‘Flake Industry’about 2,500 BC, a Medieval bronze buckle, C14 door key, an ancientleather shoe, a Puzzle Ring from C18 or C19, a C14 lions head doorknocker. A bronze key was found at Stone Cottages in 1950s. Variouspottery shards, including some identified as Roman and Medieval, havebeen found as well as handmade nails, clay pipes and stems, clay andglass bottles - dating from a time when there was no rubbish collection.Being a farming area, some agricultural implements, of course. So you gardeners keep digging and looking, you never know what youmight find? Let me know, as I would be interested to see them.Happy hunting, Sonja

  • Last Thursday I was invited to a press briefing at Heveningham Hall - wherenext for the Badingham Echo?! - to hear about the milestone of £500,000distributed to local charities, community projects and individuals in need by theHeveningham Hall Country Fair Trust.

What started in 1996 as a coffee morning to raise funds for three local churcheshas become a huge affair calling on an army of 200 local volunteers from sixvillages who plan, steward and cater for the Country Fair and, since that wasforced to be cancelled in 2001 due to Foot and Mouth, the Fireworks and nowa Christmas Market and Santa ‘Hell Run’.

Funds have been given to local schools, churches, sports clubs, communitynurses. The emphasis has been on projects that bring life back to thecommunity and improve facilities.

One of those community projects is the ‘Hall for All’ which is being planned bythe villages of Heveningham, Huntingfield and Ubbeston. Both this year’sCountry Fair and a medieval fayre at Huntingfield are using the Magna Carta’s800th anniversary as their theme.

Baron William de Huntingfield owned land from Eye across to the coast anddown to Framlingham. He was one of the 25 rebel barons who drew up theMagna Carta, the Great Charter of the Liberties which still forms the basis ofconstitutional law across the world. William’s nephew Roger de Huntingfieldmarried Nichola le Breton at Badingham in 1278. I’m hoping someone can tellme more about the Badingham connection.

£12 adults / £35 family ticket / £10 concessions. All proceeds to charity.

Medieval jousting, falconry displays and medieval village with 30 per-formers.

And the not so medieval aerobatics displays, motorcycle stunt team andzip wire across the lake. Plus the flower show, sheep show, dog showand terrier racing, classic cars, military vehicles, arts and crafts.

Farming CalendarMuch is changing out in the fields. After waiting for a good soak, to give amuch needed drink and let the nitrogen through to the roots, the cereals andoilseeds are looking a lot healthier. Grass is growing lush in the sunshine.Peas and sugar beet have pushed through, barley is coming into ear and fieldbeans will soon be in flower. Meanwhile, after so much of the countryside hasbeen a vivid yellow, the oilseed rape flowers are about to fall and we’ll bewondering how fat the pods will be this year.

Farming is so much weather dependent. Not only the clouds that pass overwithout giving a drop of rain, the strong wind that prevents spraying againstdisease and the hail that can cause so much damage close to harvest time, drought in Australia, heavy rain in North America or bumper crops in theUkraine have a huge effect on prices. Not to mention Mr Putin’s export bans, politcal unrest in north Africa and the changing diet of the Chinese people.Enough for any farmer to reach for a crystal ball or Old Moore’s Almanac !
