UKZN students go on a rampageKHANYISANI DLOMO
RAGING battles at UKZN’sPietermaritzburg campusbetween students and riot
police intensified on Monday. The protests are over a rumoured
registration fee increase.Police were forced to fire rubber
bullets after students threw stones atthem and members of RiskManagement Services.
In the process, one student wasarrested and three others wereinjured and rushed to hospital, accordingtoStudentsRepresentativeCouncil (SRC) president LunganiNhlenyama.
He insists management told themthat the annual registration fee willrise over 100%, but the institutionrubbished those claims last week.
Academicprogrammesweresettoresume on Tuesday after beingsuspended for two days followingviolent protests on Thursday.
Angry students threw stones at apassing car and forced the driver toreverseaway.Theycarriedsticksandplacards with statements such as;“F**k management, down withR9 000. This means war”.
Thecrowd,consistingofhundreds
of students, continued tipping overrubbishbinsbeforeproceedingto thelibrary lawn where they startedburning tyres.A fierce fightbrokeoutwhenastudentdrenchedtheburningtyres with a fire extinguisher.
That fuelled the situation and thegroup turned on him, but he keptthematbaybysprayingthemwiththeextinguisher.
The crowd then ran to the policechanting, “gun free country”.
They also threatened to storm the
police station, demanding that thearrested student be released.
Environmental science studentMicaelaKeddie said their lecturewasdisrupted and students in class wereforced to get out.
“They came in banging the doorand shouting at us. Our lecturer hadto rescue us through the back door. Isupport thestrikebut it’snotproperlydone. It’s unfair to force us out of theclass,” said Keddie.
Provincial police spokesperson
Thulani Zwane disputed the SRC’sreportthatastudentwasarrested.Hesaid no incidents had been reported.
Meanwhile, the Higher EducationDepartment called on the manage-ment andstudent leadership to findasolution.
“The ministry condemns in thestrongest terms the criminal acts ofdamaging the university property,”said department spokespersonKhaye Nkwanyana.
“No amount of anger and frustra-
tion can justify vandalising publicproperty that belongs to the futuregenerations of students.”
AccordingtoaPHDstudent, thingshad gone back to normal by Tuesday.
UKZNspokespersonConvyBaloyiissued a statement saying that thestrike had ended following intensediscussions between the SRC andmanagement on issues raised by stu-dents. This included the issue of theregistration fee. The outcome wouldbe communicated later.
What the issues were accordingto the SRC:>> It is true that the university wantsto raise the registration fee for tuitionin 2015.>> It istruethatSRCistotallyagainstany form of fee increment.>> It is NOT true that tuition registration for 2015, is R 9000. The figureson the table from management arebelow R5000 but the SRC continuesto reject them.>> The registration fee for residences does not form part of thediscussions.>> Tuition fees do not form part ofdiscussions.FOR MORE PICTURES FROM THE PROTEST, VISIT WWW.ECHOPMB.CO.ZA >>

Farm residents livingin constant fear
NOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]
FEAR gripped the residents ofShenstone farm near Thornvilleaftermunicipalguards lastweek
demolished two houses, allegedly forbeing built on municipal land.
The area between Ambleton farmand France township has been undercontroversy since 2012, as houseowners were alleged to have invadedmunicipal land.
Last year, themunicipality lodged acourt application to evict more than1 000 families and to demolish theirhomes.
According to the residents, despite
winning the case against themunicipality last year, they stillcontinue to being victims ofharassment.
AresidentwhospoketoEcho,NickyGebashe, said that following thedemolition of these two houses, theynow live in fear as they do not knowtheir fate.
“We are unsettled as to what willhappen next. When we started build-ing houses in this area, we werestopped as we were told that it wasmunicipal land.
“After thematter had gone to court,we were told that we could continuebuilding as the municipality did notfollowthecorrectprocedures.Wewere
told that there was a boundary wherewe cannot build since it is municipalland, andwe followedthatinstruction.
“Our main concern is that theseguards are demolishing houseswithoutanyevictionlettersfromcourt. How can we pay for electricity andwater usage when we have invadedmunicipal land?” he asked.
According to previous reports fromthe Witness, the land has been inquestion for more than 10 years, as itwas earmarked for the building of3 000 low-cost houses for residents ofFrance.
The project was stalled due to themunicipality’s budgetary constraints. One of the people whowas affected bylast week’s demolition, CollenMapfumo, said that he has taken thematter to court and is waiting for thatdecision.
“I have lost more than R40 000 indamagesandwouldneedtoworkhardto repay it,” he said.
Ward councillor Sindi Gwala saidthe land in question belongs to themunicipality and it is earmarked for adevelopment project that will assistresidents from ward 18.
“Some residents do not attendcommunitymeetingsandareunawareofwhat ishappening.Therearepeoplewho claim to be landowners and sellthe land to unsuspecting people.
“As far as I am aware, no case wasever won in court.”
At the time of going to print, themunicipality could not be reached forcomment.

LIKE any other DJ, he started spinningthe vinyls at parties and at localclubs. But his focus was always that
one day he would release an album of hisown music.
His name is DJ Too Nice, real nameSboniso Latha, a university graduate andhis song titled “Asisekho lapho” iscurrently playing on different commercialand local radio stations around theprovince. The self confessed musicfanatic said he has always had a passion
for music. The 25 year old DJ said apartfrom living and breathing music, he lovesworking with different and new artistswho are hungry for success in the musicindustry.
He is currently busy promoting histhree songs that are on the album whichwill be released next year.
Apart from promoting the album inSouth Africa, Latha has signed a partnership contract with Smooth AgentRecords in the United States of America.
“I’m one of the people who believethat charity begins at home. That is whyI am promoting my songs in my city ofresidence. My journey began in 2008
when I started playing at parties and inlocal clubs in Durban and PMB. I have hadan opportunity to share the stage withfamous DJ’s in the country and that hasinspired me. I believe that names such asDJ Sbu, Fresh and others have put SA music on the map,” said Latha.
Asked how he sees the growth ofmusic in PMB, he said it’s up to localartists to grow music locally before heading to other provinces.

Third-generation Sorento unveiled overseas
THEnewKia Sorentowas unveiled in Ko-reainAugustwithauniqueblendofstyle,practicalityandtechnology,whichbuilds
on the success of the outgoing model. The new CUV’s smoother, swept-back pro-
file and sculpted surfaces introduce a higherlevel of sophistication for the third-generationmodel,deliveringapremiumlookandfeel,withmorespaceandnumerous innovative features.
The designers of the third-generation KiaSorentonamedtheirinspirationforthenewcaras “Streetwolf”.
Although the styling changes are evolution-ary, they subtly alter the character of the newSorento, highlighting its sleek, sinuous, profile, while creating a sophisticated appearance andensuring the new model has a bolder on-the-road presence.
In profile, the newmodel retains the Soren-to’s hallmark long bonnet and characteristicwide D-pillar, but a lower roofline, higher belt-lineandswept-backshapegivethecar dramat-ic, muscular stance.
The exterior styling was led by Kia’sNamyang design studio in Korea, with signifi-cant input from the brand’s Frankfurt, Germa-ny and Irvine, California design studios.
The styling of the cabin follows a “modernandwide” theme, providing the interiorwith astable, horizontal layout and appearance.
Thiswidthisechoedinthewiderinstrumentcluster, interior garnish and the wrap-around
shape of the dashboardwhich extends into thedoor trims.
A higher proportion of soft-touch materialsand leather creates amodern luxury feel to thecabinandgives thenewSorentoagenuinepre-mium vehicle ambience.
Compared to the previous-generationmod-el, the increased exterior dimensions and theextended wheelbase (+80 mm to 2,780 mm)have liberated additional space in the cabin ofthe new car.
Although the roof-line is 15mmlower, repo-sitioned seat cushions ensure increased head-room for occupants in all three rows, who willalso enjoy greater leg room. Cargo space alsoincreases, with a longer cargo bay floor (up by87mm), and capacity with the third row seatsfolded flat up 17.5%, from 515 litres to605 litres (VDA).ThenewSorentoalso featuresa new under-floor tonneau cover storage com-partment.
The new Sorento debuts a number of new, advanced on-board technologies to improveconvenience and further enhance the owner-ship experience.
Whendeveloping thenewSorento, akey fo-cus for the Kia chassis engineering team wasachieving improvements in ride comfort, high-speed stability and handling response.
Kia South Africa says the new Sorento willarrive locally during the first quarter of 2015.

19A fear ofchange
DENNISBergkamp talksabout youthprogrammesthatfocus
on developing extra-ordinaryindividuals instead of tactics, systems and collectingtrophies.HecallsthenewAjaxAmsterdam youth centre aworkshop for encouragingand educating genius.
It is refreshing to see andread about what others aredoing. Presently, we face asituation where people havebecome prisoners of fear. Wefear change.Wehave failed toevolve, a complete changefrom the past.
Presently, wehavebecomeobsessedwithcertificatesandlevels. We seem to think thatcertifying people will solve allthe problems.
Believe me, I am a firmbeliever ofmeaningful educa-tion.We have not been able toproduce a footballer capableof playing for theMadrids andBarcelonasof thisworld in thelast 20 years.
The present trainingmethods are failing localtalent big time.
Sure, clubs like Ajax CapeTown are producing goodplayers’, but not exceptional, creative and special football-ers.
It isalsotruethatpresently, the majority of people infootball lack passion for thegame. There are too many ofususing thegame to serveouregos. How many of us servefootball like God?
Arsene Wenger calls it aspiritual thing - havingfootball interest comingbefore your interests. Howmany footballers in thiscountry do extra work toimprove their technicalquality?Footballerswhotrainand compete with a smile dowell in football. They do notfeelanypressureor tiredness.
The correct mindset has tostart with coaches andofficials. South African play-ers are a product of their foot-
ball administrators andcoaches.Coachesneed to taketheir jobs very seriously. Weneed to spend lots of timebefore and after trainingworking on improvingtraining of players.
Are we detailed enough?Do we spend enough timelooking at the details, researching topics, observingmatches and studying thegame? I doubt if this ishappening at present. Ourplayers also need to pushthemselvesbeyondtheircom-fort zones.
We need players that pushthemselves to be better andcoaches that fully understandtheir roles.

According to Sasfa deputypresident S’pha Khumalo, whilethere is a big shortage of playinggrounds within the municipality, the majority of the existing onesare in a bad condition.
Khumalo said most of thegroundsaroundthecityareleasedto Maritzburg College and it is abattle to fixture games.
“Wereallyneedourmunicipal-ity to come on board on this one. There is a huge shortage ofgrounds and Sasfa is battling tostage events.
“You will remember that localschools used to use Qokololostadium but it was demolishedandnever replaced. Also, Tathamand Manor grounds are unplaya-
because theyare leased toMaritz-burg College,” said Khumalo.
Meanwhile, Willowfontein'sIkusasa Elihle secondary schoolare the Champions of UMgun-gundlovu District’s Kay MotsepeCup.
Thiswas confirmed recently atCampsDriftGroundsnearMakro. The Willowfontein boys beatCopesville Secondary School 1-0in the final.
Ikusasa Elihle's head coach,Nkosi Ngubane told Echo that hisboys won because of the passionand commitment they displayedon and off the field.
“Really, what took us far wasunity, hardwork and outstandingteam work displayed by my play-ers,” said Ngubane.
