pays them for their overtime duties.About 40 Emergency Medical Services

personnel, servicing Central Base (Greys,Appelsbosch and Howick), have not reportedfor duty since Monday, said Department ofHealth corporate communication generalmanager, Sam Mkhwanazi.

Some called in sick and others requestedfamily responsibility leave, he said.

“This has posed a threat to service delivery. However the department has swiftly activatedcontingency plans to ensure that adequateservice is provided,” said Mkhwanazi.

A staffmemberwho spoke toEcho said thatthedepartmenthasnotpaid themforovertimeduties since May last year.

“It’s been a whole year that we have beenasking and begging them to sort out thepayment issue. We have had meetings andliaised with the management but they haveturned a blind eye on the matter.

“Sincewearenot allowed to strike,wehave

decided to call in sick. Some of us have takenfamily responsibility leave. We will only getback to work when they deposit the money inour accounts.

“Thelastmeetingwehadwiththeprovincialoperations manager, Muzi Mabaso, made nodifference. We were angered about what hesaid and we were pushed to the decision thatwe have taken.

“Mabaso told us that overtime is voluntary.Wedon’tknowwhathemeantbythat.Theyaresending usmessages saying that they will sortout the matter within 14 days.

“We are not falling for that. All we want isthemoneyinouraccounts,”saidthestaffmem-ber.

Another staff member said they haveapplied for an official strike authorisation.

“Bytheendof today, wewillknowifwehavebeen granted permission to have an officialstrike.

“We are tired of talking, it’s time themanagement realise how serious this is. Fromour side, no one is working and it ends there,”he said.

At various events held atlocal hospitals, nurses recitedtheir pledge which they firstmadewhen theygraduatedasnurses.

While holding candles, asymbol of the nurses lampwhich is represented at allhospitals, nurses pledged tocontinue their service ofhumanityand toendeavour topractise their profession withconscience and with dignity.

The event held atMidlandsMedicalCentrewasdedicatedto Doctor Dunraj Mani, thefoundingdirectorofthehospi-tal who passed away duringthe year.

Nurses were thanked fortheir commitment to the pro-fession, applauded for work-ing long hours but most espe-cially for thecaretheyhaveforeach and every patient theytend to during their time ofillness.

UMgungundlovu DistrictMunicipal Mayor, YusefBhamjee, was present at theNetcareStAnneseventwhere

he encouraged nurses tocontinue learning the newdevelopments of medicine, emphasizing thateducation iskey regardless of how longthey have been in service for.

“Nurses are a universalsymbolofcompassionandaremore often than not the firstpoint of care for patients inneed. However, around theworld and particularly inSouthAfrica,theworkofnurs-es remains greatly underesti-matedandundervalued,”saidShannon Nell, director ofnursing and nursing educa-tion at Netcare.

Hospice launches Casipo programme

NICOLE JOHN>>[email protected]

THE Msunduzi Hospice Association recentlyhosted the provincial launch of the Care andSupport for Improved Patient Outcomes(CASIPO) programme, which aims to expandand enhance palliative care.

CASIPO’schiefofparty,Andre’Wagner, saidthat they were grateful to the Department ofHealth for making Hospice a strategic partnerand enabling them to develop and emphasizethe importantofpalliative care inSouthAfrica.

The idea behind the five year programme, which began in other provinces last year, is tointegrate palliative health care into govern-ment policies and to get it on the same level ofimportance as primary health care.

“We are excited to be a part of the dramaticchangestoimprovehealthcareinSouthAfrica, andarecommittedtosupporttheSouthAfricangovernment,” said Wagner.

He added that CASIPO is not changing theways and methods of what palliative health

careiscurrently,butmerelyenhancingthecarethat patients receive.

“Our primary focus still remains servicedelivery.”

Wagner revealed that not even one percentof Hospice patients are treated in-house;almost all patients are treated in their homesbycaregiversandnurseswhogoouttovisitandcare for them, which is what palliative healthcare training is so important.

“With CASIPO we want to change thedeliveryofhealthcare inSouthAfrica, wewantto build capacity anddevelopment of palliativecareandgettrainingincludedatanundergrad-uate level of studies as well as postgraduate.

“Wewant to improve on the retentions andreferrals systems to ensure thatnopatient getslost in the system,” said Wagner.

WarrenOxford-Huggett,MsunduziHospiceChief Executive Officer (CEO), also celebratedthe nurses who work for Hospice and thenurses in the hospitals that they deal with aspart of their celebrations for InternationalNurses Day.

Unfortunately, a decisionhad tobe takena fewyears agoto cut back on costs as thetuition and hiring of steeldrums was proving too expen-sive. The school didnot own itsown steel drums and had tomake use of an outside steeldrum expert to bring his owndrums.

Happily, the school is nowable to report that a good set ofhigh-quality steel drums hasbeensourcedinPortElizabeth, and been purchased. Theinstruments arrived a fewweeks ago.

With its own set of steeldrums,St.Nicholas isnowableto resume its legacy of excep-tional steel drum playing. Thepupils are still re-learning theart so at this year’s NedbankGreen Mile the trusty marim-bas will once again be on dis-play.

ANTICIPATING FUNK!

FORthepast15years,Funk!hasbeen one of themost anticipat-ed events on the school

performance calendar, and thisyear’s event at the Hilton CollegeTheatre promises to be no exception.

Hosted by The Theatre - St Anne’sCollege and Hilton College Theatre,Funk! 2014will be staged onMay 17

and May 19 to 21 at 7.30pm nightly.Funk! evolved as an idea to create

a dance programme for schools withvery specific aims:

• to unite schools in workingtowards a common goal;

• to give drama students and theirteachers the opportunity to createand rehearse pieces of dance theatre

for public performance; and•toenableyoungpeopletoseethat

movement, dance and dance theatreis accessible to them and not only inthehandsofprofessionaladultdancecompanies.

Each school has to create a six-minute dance piece using any type ofmusical or textual accompaniment.

The programme accommodates arangeofchoreographicandperform-ance possibilities and provides theperfect opportunity for schools toexperiment with new forms.

Funk! is not a competition, whichmeans that every piece on theprogramme is valued for its individu-al form and style and the overall

contribution that it makes to theprogramme’s diversity.

The highlight of the production isalways the mass group finale whereall the schools perform together onstage.

Tickets are R60. To book phone033 383 0126.

27Fireworksexpected inNedbankCup final

DURBAN streets around MosesMabhida Stadiumare expected tocome to a standstill on Saturdayafternoon.

The Soweto giants, OrlandoPirates, and the Milpark basedoutfit Bidvest Wits will lock hornsin the mouth-watering NedbankCup final at 3pm.

Soccer followers are expectednot only to see endless fireworks, but to also witness two differentformats of soccer.

The Clever Boys, under GavinHunt, are known to believe inquick, long balls, counter attacksand are dangerous on the flanksand set pieces.

On the other side, AmaBhaka-Bhaka are mainly a skillful teamand fond of building their movesfrom the midfield and from theback. Pirates captain and veterandefender,

Lucky Lekgwathi, this weeksaid his team was planning to goall out against their opponents onSaturday in order to reward theirdie-hards.

“Our aim is honour our follow-ers with a Nedbank Cup. This isour last chance to make themhappy after reaching three finalsearly in the season but failing tobring any trophies home. So thisis ours and already ourminds aresetonit.Wewilldoitforourfollow-ers around the country,” saidLekgwathi.

Pirates head coach, Vladimir‘VV’Vermezovic, earlierthisweekmade a bold statement when hepredicted that his team will winthis year’s Nedbank Cup.

Vermezovic said that a fewyears ago, when he was coachingKaizer Chiefs, he was able to wintwo trophies and canwin anotherone.

“Remember the last time Icoached a South African team Iwon two cups. I believe I can stilldo it. I am also glad that we arecurrently playing well. When Ijoined Pirates, Iwas told that theywere able to reach three finalswithout winning anything, now Iam saying this is their fourth finaland theirgreat chance to stop thatjinx once and for all,” said Verme-zovic.

Wits star goalkeeper, andformer Pirates player MoeneebJosephs, says his teamwas againpreparing to spoil the partyprepared by the Soweto giants.

“Remember when we went tothe semi-finals against the socalled SA’s Glamour Boys, KaizerChiefs.Weweretoldthatitwastheendoftheroadandthedreamfinalbetween the two Soweto giantswas on the cards.

AgainonSaturday, wewillgoinas underdogs as usual butcelebrate our victory at the end ofthe day.”
