Mid Mountains Community Gardens
Everyone is invited to be part of this exciting community project. It only costs $2 to join and of course, your time and commitment to help. The garden is at Kihilla, a heritage home-stead in Queens Rd, Lawson, current-ly owned by the Church Army.
There has been a great deal of work and planning into the design and organisation of scheme. A second wa-ter tank is being installed and the first crops are ready. Members get to pick the produce with the excess sold lo-cally. Any funds raised go back into the garden.
There are several teams operating already including planning & design, and communications. There is a co or-dinator at the garden every Saturday so come along and see for yourself. Contact Greg or Maeve at the MMNC for more details 4759 2592.
Meet MaeveHi I’m Maeve and I’m the Com-
munity Development Worker at Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre in Lawson.
I’ve been at Centre for just over three months now.
I’m so happy to be working in the community I live in. Having a job in the Community in the Mountains is a treas-ure long sought. I love Community De-velopment Work because it allows me to work with the whole community to build a creative, healthy and support-ive community. I’m a social creature and I get to spend time networking and getting to know people and what’s im-portant to them. It’s my job to support community members and groups to build and grow a sense of belonging, connection and support for everyone and between everyone.
So feel free to drop in to say hel-lo, have a cuppa, chew my ear about an idea you have. I’m generally there Tuesday – Thursday.

2010 Premier’s Excellence AwardsOn 22 November 2010 Hazel-
brook’s Link-Up (NSW) Aboriginal Corporation’s Family Link Service won the category Strong Communities: Family Support and Assistance in the 2010 Premier’s Excellence Awards.
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch announced the winners of the 2010 Premier’s Excellence Awards for Leadership in Aboriginal Commu-nities. Mr Lynch said the awards rec-ognised the tireless effort of Aboriginal people in New South Wales in building stronger communities.
“These winners inspire others to make their mark and lead by example in communities throughout the State,” he said.
The Link-Up (NSW) Aboriginal Corporation’s Family Link Service at Hazelbrook keeps Aboriginal children and young people connected with their families, communities and cultures across NSW.
Marla - An RSPCA Success Story
Five years ago last Easter Hazel-brook resident Bill Sweeney bought a dog from the RSPCA shelter in Katoomba, a cross Doberman four months old who quickly became one of the family. They called her Marla. Bill started obedience training her from day one and a few months ago Marla won the highest Obedience Title there is in NSW. Last June Marla achieved Obedience Champion and from there went on to win the Utility Dog Excel-lence title. Marla is nearly six years old.
Bill is very generous with his time and instructs at Blue Mountains Dog Club, Springwood District Dog Train-ing Club and Leura Club on a volun-tary basis.
If you are thinking of buying a pet, young or old, consider having a look at an animal shelter. You are not only giving an animal the chance at a new life in a loving home, you’re support-ing the continuing efforts of the RSP-CA to care for all animals throughout Australia. Contact information for the RSPCA shelter in Katoomba is 121-125 Mort Street, Katoomba North phone 4782 2674 or www.rspcansw.org.au.

Lawson FestivalThis year was a great success,
with perfect weather and plenty of fun and interest for eveyone.
Mick from the Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre said “the festival committee did a fantastic job, with Laurie Strathdee co ordi-nating it all. This was the best ever and we are looking forward to next year already.”
Anyone interested in help-ing next year can contact Mick at the centre 4759 2592, or email: [email protected].
Lawson Highway
UpgradeThe first stage of the Lawson
highway upgrade was officially opened on 13 November and dem-olition of vacant roadside shops has begun.
Stage one of the $220 million project involved widening the exist-ing highway from two to four lanes between Bass Street and Ridge Street with a raised central median and bicycle facilities, widening the railway overpass bridge at San Jose Avenue to four lanes and in-
stalling new traffic lights.Member for Blue Mountains
Phil Koperberg said the work would improve safety and reduce travel times for motorists.
“The Lawson project is one of the most challenging parts of the Great Western Highway upgrade and it gives me great pleasure to officially open this section to four lanes,” Mr Koperberg said.
“The redevelopment of seven shops is scheduled for comple-tion late 2010, when existing busi-nesses plan to relocate,” according to the RTA. Construction of a new service road and car park is set to begin in early 2011.
The second stage of the Law-son upgrade began in May and involves widening the highway to four lanes between Ferguson Av-enue, Hazelbrook and Bass Street, Lawson. It will see the realignment of 600 metres of the main western railway line to the north of Sydney Rock while a new road bridge will be built across the railway line.
An RTA spokesman said the project was running on time and is expected to be completed in 2012.

This amazing mural of Terrace Falls has been painted under the railway arch in Hazelbrook by local artist Michael Lynn. The president of the Resi-dents’ Association, Angela Lougheed, would like to thank the team behind its development, especially committee member Greg Birtles and Railcorp who have funded the mural. Greg is hoping that the other side of the tunnel can also be painted with community involvement from young people. Funds need to be found so anyone with ideas can contact the association.

OVER 55 & WORKING INCREASE YOUR SUPER BALANCE FOR RETIREMENT
To significantly increase your final superannuation total for retire-ment, there are several risk free strategies for workers who are over 55 years of age. These strategies are government approved and are tax effective.
A person aged 55 # with a cur-rent superannuation balance of $60,000 will retire with approximate-ly $152,500. Implementing one of these strategies the same person could have a balance of $188,500 for retirement. That’s quite a sig-nificant increase that is worth investigating.
Would you like a greater retire-ment income from your superannua-tion fund? The higher your current income and the greater your cur-rent super balance, the better these strategies work in increasing your final balance. The benefits of these strategies are even greater for peo-ple aged over 6o.
If you are thinking about your superannuation and how it will get you through retirement Mondy Walpole Financial Services may be able to assist. We can also help with Personal Insurance, Busi-ness Insurance, Retirement Plan-ning and Investments. Call Adam today on 0431 517 455 to make an appointment.# Income $40,000 pa

“Community Reading” is a partnership between Hazelbrook Public School & Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. At the beginning of the year there is training where volunteers learn how the program works and what the expectations are. It’s also an opportunity to ask questions and to meet other volunteers and hear their hints from previous years. For a short input of time [about 45mins a week] there is a great sense of direct benefit to the child, giving a great sense of satisfaction to the helper. If you would like to join this band of happy helpers in 2011 contact Maeve at the Neighbourhood Centre 4759 2592.
