Early Bird Gets The WormAt midnight, it was time to get down to work. Studying for the test was put off all weekend, but I tend to thrive on pressure. This weekend was filled with parties and video games. No time for school. I tried to start Sunday morning, but ended up surfing the internet. “Man flies across the country to have sex with a girl who turned out to be an undercover officer.”“Woman gets locked in a room for 15 years by her husband because she didn't have a big enough dowry.”“82 prisoners remain locked up in Guantanamo Bay despite having been cleared of all charges against them, because the US doesn't want to deport them to places where they might face torture or other human rights abuses.”Headlines such as these delayed all progress for hours. Then, there was the basketball game. Playoffs. The time of the year when players actually try. Needless to say, I couldn’t do any work.

I had 3 energy drinks by my side and a granola bar. Now all I needed was some music. Skimming through iTunes, I checked out the classical music section. Reports have shown that people that listen to this genre while studying, fare better on tests. Vivaldi. What a sweet name. Spring it is. After listening to the entire list of Vivaldi songs, I was done.

The effects from the energy drinks were wearing down and since the class wasn’t until 10, I went to bed. Unfortunately, I forgot to set my alarm. I woke up to the see the clock read 12:14. Fuck!

The Pit“Hey guys. We just want to tell you that if we punch or kick you guys during the show, we’re sorry.”What are they doing? You don’t flail your arms and do random kicks in the pit. This was a whole different experience compared to the metal concerts we’ve been to. At metal shows, people would just head-bang and rush into people. Here people were literally kicking and punching the air. We only knew how to do one thing and that was to plow people over. We’d obviously help them up, but we drew great pleasure in knocking them down. We even kept tallies. “I got four,” my buddy said.

After 3 songs, I was more exhausted than playing an entire football game - to the point of puking. I needed a break, so I slithered through the crazed crowd and found a water fountain. Once hydrated, I went back and found my friend bleeding profusely.

What happened?“Some punk ass bitch hit me in the eye?”

We left for the hospital right away. My friend needed 7 stitches for the gash on his eyelid. However, this incident didn’t deter us from going to another hardcore show the following week. And that time we were ready.

Cavity Cake GirlNot vampires. Not aliens. Not ghosts. Well ok maybe ghosts. But what frightened me the most as a kid was the music video for Tom Petty, in which he ate a girl. Now I can look back and laugh at how naïve I was, but during those days, I was scared. Petty took this girl. Not just any girl, but Alice in Wonderland, and essentially tortured her. I just wanted to somehow get into the TV and save her. He laughed while he cut out a delicious slice of her body, during which she was screaming. I questioned why there wasn’t any blood coming out, but my answer was that he had wizard-like skills and turned her body into a scrumptious chocolate cake. I even had nightmares where it was me being eaten. With his powers, Petty could’ve transformed everyone into cake. Luckily,

that never happened.

►Howie Day - CollideHowie Day - CollideWhat Comes AroundGirls with unrealistic crushes on guys 3 times older than them always made me laugh. Walls were littered with heart-shaped posters. I would constantly tease her for listening to hacks that were all image and no substance. I appreciated singers that could write their own lyrics and play their own instruments. The only thing these artists knew how to do was dance and wear ton of makeup. At least they were good-looking. Over the years, my sister would play the same songs again and again. I couldn’t help but know the lyrics to them. I felt ashamed about this, so I tried to somehow get them out of my head. I would crank up rock songs for hours straight, but it was no use. The catchy pop tunes always lured me back in.

I started to secretly steal my sisters CDs and play them in my room. She had too many of them to even notice. I put on headphones so she couldn’t hear it in the next room. One day she barged in to me dancing. “What are you listening to?” she asked. Sweat poured down my cheek.

Ummm….Ummm. Now my sister calls me a girl.
