Basic Points for Check Measuring

Check all measurements on site to ensure all materials are ordered correctly.

1. Check the point of attachment to building, i.e. to wall, fascia, existing frame etc.

Allow room for fall – 20mm per 1000mm (1 degree) minimum.

2. Check the pitch of existing roof to determine which rafter brackets are to be used for

supporting the Eclipse frame.

3. Check if the Eclipse frame will be level or have a fall - this will determine the type of

Eclipse gutter to be used, i.e. tapered or non-tapered.

4. Check if existing building is timber frame or steel frame to determine which fixings

are to be used.

5. Check squareness of existing building.

6. Check position of existing downpipe to determine where Eclipse downpipe will be

fitted.

7. Determine which way the Eclipse louvres will run. Opening to North or East is

preferable. Maximum louvre length and size of each bank must be considered as

well as location of the roof. Use the Design Manual span tables to work out

maximum louvre span. Actual LOUVRE LENGTH is the inside frame dimension less

85 mm.

8. Check the best position for the Transformer or a sunny area for the Solar Panel &

Battery set up. Also check if the roof is tiled or corrugated iron, as this could effect

the positioning of these items. Also consider where are the cables to run, externally

or concealed?

9. Check best position for the control switch, and how many there will be. Ensure a

minimum of 450mm clearance from 240V cables or fittings.

10. In preparation for ordering Eclipse product, calculate components required for the

project as outlined in the following section :- QUANTITY TAKEOFF

Page 7: Eclipse Flat Louvre Installation Instructions · HV Aluminium Wholesale Department 1 Eclipse Flat Louvre Operations Manual – 2013 . Eclipse Flat Louvre Installation Instructions

Quantity Takeoff

Louvres

To determine the quantity and length of louvres for a project, first determine the direction

the louvres will run (Opening to the North or East is Preferable) and then calculate as

follows:

Length of the louvres is:- Inside Frame Size - 85mm.

The 85 mm is deducted to allow for clearance for tracks, pins and motor within the frame.

Quantity of louvres is:- Inside Frame Size - 44mm and then divided by 150mm.

Round down the answer to the nearest whole number, e.g. 33.7 becomes 33 louvres. The 44mm is

subtracted to allow for 15mm clearance at each end, plus 14mm which is the difference between the

louvre width of 164mm and the louvre coverage of 150mm).

Track and Lock Angle

An equal amount of Track and Lock Angle is required for each roof. Use the inside frame

size “along the edges" of the louvres. These items are supplied in 4 metre lengths.

Total Length of Track & Lock Angle is:- Inside Frame Size x 3

Quantity of Track & Lock Angle is:- Total length divided by 4 metres

Pins

Each louvre requires 3x pins:- 1x Free End Pin

1x Motor Pivot Pin

1x Control Pin Motor 12VDC electric motor with 316 stainless steel gearing. The Standard #3 motor will operate 18m2 with a maximum control arm length of 6.0metres. The #2 motor will do up to 12m2 with a maximum control arm of 6.0metres.

Control System The Eclipse is operated by a 12-volt direct current motor (12V DC). The motor is powered by either a Transformer or a 12 Volt battery. Most applications use the transformer. The components will vary according to the amount of motors and which control system you are using. Weather Control 200M series – will operate 1 to 2 motors. Components include touch pad, control box, transformer, battery back up, rain sensor and small connections (supplied as a kit).

Weather Control 400M series – will operate 1 to 4 motors. Components include touch pad, control box, transformer, battery back up, rain sensor and small connections (supplied as a kit). Weather Control 800M series – will operate 1 to 8 motors. . Components include touch pad, control box, transformer, battery back up, rain sensor and small connections (supplied as a kit). ***Remote control, smoke detector, motion sensor and Sun tracking systems are also available for the weather control switches. Other control system options :-

The Remote Rain Control systems has optional components that can come with the control box & transformer – a Remote Handset & wall mount, wall mounted touchpad and rain sensor plate.

A simple touch pad for 1 or 2 motors. Requires a transformer to be ordered at the same time.

A toggle switch for 1x or 2 motors. Requires switch plate, fuse, transformer, mounting block and possible speed reducer to be ordered as well.

The above is based on the following rules:

Each motor will control one bank of louvres up to 18m2 (square metres), with the condition that each bank is no longer than 7.0 metres.

A Toggle switch can operate 1 or 2 motors. A Switch plate can have 1 or 2 switches and fuses mounted to it. Transformers will run 1 motor at a time. Therefore 1x transformer will ONLY run

multiple motors if one motor is operated at a time, which means a separate Toggle switch for each. Weather Control and Kiss switches already accommodate for this.

1x fuse is required per toggle switch. If using battery- 1x battery can run 1 or 2 motors at a time. 1x Solar Panel is required per battery.

Installation Instructions

These instructions outline the steps involved in erecting an Eclipse Opening Roof. If there is any uncertainty about installation, contact the Newcastle head office or your state supplier.

The steps involved are:

1. Erect Beams and Posts

2. Attach Gutter to Beams

3. Track and Lock Angle

4. Attach Motor

5. Install Louvres

6. Control Arm

7. Connect Motor

8. Wiring and Controls

Page 11: Eclipse Flat Louvre Installation Instructions · HV Aluminium Wholesale Department 1 Eclipse Flat Louvre Operations Manual – 2013 . Eclipse Flat Louvre Installation Instructions

1. Erect Beams and Posts

The Eclipse is normally installed within a framework of beams on all sides. The two

edge beams are the main structural beams, providing support for the Tracks, which

hold the louvres. The side beams are important in tying the whole frame together, as

well as support for the internal gutter. Please note that the opening roof system does

NOT provide bracing of the whole structure and should be treated differently to fixed

roof applications.

Typically use 250x50x3mm or 200x50x3mm aluminium beams, however this depends

on the design of the project, spans, corrosion considerations and customer preference.

Check the length of the louvres on site; if they are short it may be possible to alter the

frame to accommodate the louvres. If the louvres are too long they can be trimmed

down to suit the frame. To allow for drainage the louvres must be installed with a

minimum fall of 20mm per 1000mm (This is a one degree pitch), but 25mm per

1000mm is preferable. To achieve the fall you can either:-

1. Construct the frame with fall and the louvres with the same fall

2. Construct a level frame and install the louvres with a fall inside the frame.

BEAMS – 200x50x3mm Aluminium section

The internal Eclipse gutters will be installed differently depending on whether the frame is level or pitched. Generally the frame will be fitted level to suit the existing buildings. Dwg 1.1 – 200x50x3mm Aluminium Beam Mitred to form corner beam connection using 50x50x3mm angle internally. Fixings are screwed through beam and angle from outside face and inside face of beam. Dwg 1.2 – 200x50x3mm Aluminium Beam corner butt joint at 90 degrees using 44x3mm extruded aluminium channel fixed to the face of one beam for adjoining beam to connect to. This method does require an endcap channel or angle to be located in the hollow end of the beam. Dwg 1.3 - 200x50x3mm Aluminium Beam corner butt joint at a non standard angle using 44x3mm extruded aluminium channel, manufactured to the correct angle by others then fixed to the face of one beam for adjoining beam to connect to. This method does require an endcap channel or angle to be located in the hollow end of the beam. Dwg 1.4 Below - Standard Rafter Bracket attachment to existing thru the fascia. The Rafter Bracket is designed to match the roof pitch and is bolted to the house rafter. The bracket extends under the existing house gutter to a flat plate for the beam to be bolted to. It is a steel fabrication, galvanised and powder coated to suit the frame colour. It is usually covered by a Bracket Cover Trim.

2. Attach Gutter to Beams

The internal gutter is an important part of the Eclipse system as it provides the water catchment around the whole frame, as well as carrying water to the downpipe. It is therefore important to install the gutter correctly to ensure there are no leaks and the finished job looks good.

Gutter styles available are - Extruded 2.5mm

- 2x Piece Folded

- 1x Piece Folded

Dwg 2.1 - Start by installing the first gutter at the lowest end (Drainage End).

Dwg 2.2 - Next mount the side gutters and overlap tabs on top of the first gutter.

Dwg 2.3 - Fit the high side last. Water will then flow down over the tabs towards the drainage end and downpipe.

NOTE: Once the gutter is fixed in position most measurements will be taken from it so it is very important that is installed correctly.

3. Track & Lock Angle

The Eclipse Louvres are held at the correct height and spacing with a 2 part Track and Lock Angle system. There are three of these sets required- 2x sets that are fitted to the front and back beams and one set that will form the control arm (this will operate all the louvres in unison).

Set out Lock Angle and Track so the longest pieces make up the control arm and shorter pieces are attached to the beams, but ensure any joins are staggered between Track and Lock Angle. Strengthen joins with extra fixing adjacent to butt joint. Ensure Lock Angle spacing remains at 150mm centres across joins (use another piece of lock angle as a template).

Cut the Track to inside frame width less 100mm. Centre the Lock Angle on the Track and trim the Lock Angle to the same length. Pre drill holes in the Lock Angle and the Track to suit the fixing screws.

Dwg 3.1 - The Track is to be fixed centrally to the beams. This will leave a 50mm clearance at both ends.

Dwg 2.1

Dwg 2.3

Dwg 2.2

Page 14: Eclipse Flat Louvre Installation Instructions · HV Aluminium Wholesale Department 1 Eclipse Flat Louvre Operations Manual – 2013 . Eclipse Flat Louvre Installation Instructions

HV Aluminium Wholesale Department 14 Eclipse Flat Louvre Operations Manual – 2013

Dwg 3.2 - ***NOTE – For #2 motor a distance of 155mm from the top of the Track to the inside of the gutter is required. – For #3 motor a distance of 155mm from the top of the Track to the inside of the gutter is required. Free end is also 10mm higher than for the eclipse. Keep the opposing Tracks parallel & square with each other. The motor end is higher than the free end, any side ways fall must be equal.

Dwg 3.3 - Ensure the Track is fitted with the small slot to the top. Fixings are screwed thru the bottom slot at 300mm centres.

4. Attach Motor

The standard position for the motor is on the high side of the roof. The motor should be mounted approximately 1/3 the distance along the beam from the closing end to help provide leverage.

Dwg 4.1 - Decide which way the louvres are to close.

Dwg 4.2 - Measure for position of motor 1/3 of the way along beam to the closing end and make small pencil mark above the Track.

Dwg 4.3 - Locate exact motor position by sitting the Lock Angle over Track and then

identify the two notches closest to the 1/3 position. Mark the Track at these two notch

points. Remove Lock Angle for now. Fix the motor centrally between the two marks you

have made.

Dwg 4.4 - The backing plate hooks over the top of the Track. Use counter sunk head

fixings to screw the motor to the beam.

Dwg 4.5 – Cut the Lock Angle around the motor mounting plate. This is approximately

110mm wide. Also run all cables from power to switches to motor, diagrams are

included with each switch kit. See wiring diagrams in section 8 on Pages 44 to 49.

***Now is a good time to clean out the gutters, remove all swarf and filings.

5. Install Louvres

The louvres will need to be trimmed to length – this will be the inside frame size less

85mm. ***NOTE – The louvre on the Opening side of the motor should be cut 5mm

shorter than the rest to allow for clearance of the motor bolt head. Once louvres

are trimmed to length, remove all burrs and sharp edges from the pin holes, this will

allow the pins to be fitted cleanly.

Dwg 5.1 - Place the louvre in the correct position, winged flange to the top. Hole B –

Free End Pin, Hole C – Motor Pivot Pin, Hole D – Control Pin.

Dwg 5.2 – Debur all holes before inserting pins into correct holes. Ensure the pins are inserted all the way, so the nylon bush finishes flush with the louvre edge. Use Alumalube or Inox spray for easier insertion. Tap lightly with a light hammer or mallet – 5 to 10 taps. Do not try to belt them in with 1 or 2 hits. Add up the amount of louvres you require on each side of the motor. Slide the louvres into the tracks using the motor pivot pin and the free end pin. The motor pivot pin is to be on the motor side of the frame, the free end pin to the opposing side. Dwg 5.3 - Space out the Louvres so that each notch in the Lock Angle has a pin seated in it. Start on the smallest section on the motor side, and then move to longer stretches and around to the free end. Clamp the Lock angle onto the Track then screw the Lock Angle down from the top thru the holes pre-drilled earlier, approximately at 300mm centres. (You can screw thru the front face if required, but still clamp the lock angle to the track before you fit screws) ***The Lock Angle will ‘Kick Out’ slightly as it is fitted into position, it is designed not to sit square, but to ensure that the notches rest hard against the pins.

6. Control Arm Dwg 6.1- Trim the remaining Track and Lock Angle to only 10mm outside the first and last notches. This will prevent the Control Arm fouling on the beams. Dwg 6.2 - Pre drill a 6mm hole through the Track and Lock Angle for seating of the motor bolt. The hole centre is to be 7mm down from the top of the Lock Angle at the mid-point between the notches.

Dwg 6.3 - Slide the Track over the Control Pins on the motor side of the louvres. Make sure all the louvres are leaning in the same direction. This will form part of the control arm that operates the louvres in unison. Dwg 6.4 - Fit the Lock Angle over the Track, ensuring each notch in the Lock Angle is seated over a Control pin. Screw the Lock Angle down from the top through the holes pre-drilled earlier, approximately at 300mm centres. Dwg 6.5 - The roof is now closed, but not attached to the motor. The louvres should now rotate as a complete bay. Dwg 6.6 - Lift the control arm by hand to ensure the louvres operate freely. The louvres are now in the vertical position. Be careful as the louvres will be heavy and will fall shut with a lot of force. Dwg 6.7 - The louvres are in the fully open position. Lift the control arm again so that the louvres return to the vertical position to connect the motor.

7. Connect Motor With the louvres in the open position mark dead centre between the two control pins on the control arm. Dwg 7.1 - With louvres in the vertical position insert the motor bolt through the Motor Arm and Control Arm as follows – Bolt, S/Steel washer, Nylon washer, Stepped Nylon washer between Motor Arm & Control Arm with step fitting into motor arm, nylon washer & S/Steel washer to outside of Control Arm, Nyloc nut. Take care not to over tighten the nut and bolt, as this will hinder the rotation of the louvres. Dwg 7.2 - The motor is now attached to the louvres through the control arm. When the switch system is wired the motor will operate the louvres.

8. A Wiring Details

When running the cables to each component of this control system, ensure they are kept clear of all the other cables for this system. Also keep them clear from the cabling that is already in the building, especially 240V. 240 Volt cables in particular can interfere with signals to other cables causing the control box to function incorrectly. Keep cable lengths in-line with those mentioned in the list below, as current loss in long cables will cause poor signal strength and can cause the control box to function incorrectly. If your project requires longer cable runs you will require a thicker cable or double up the cable for that run into a connector block, then use a short piece of cable to connect the doubled up section into the green plugs. Maximum Length per cable

CatV – 10 LM

Cable #1 – 10 LM

Cable #2 – 7 LM

Cable #4 (rain sensor cable) – 10 LM Max, best under 5 LM

8. B CONTROL SYSTEMS

8.1 - Weather Control M Series - For 1 to 8 Motors

The wiring for all the Weather Control systems is very similar. The basic difference is the amount of motors you are able to plug into the control box i.e. a 200M series can have 1 to 2 motors, a 400M series can have 1 to 4 motors, a 800M series can have 1 to 8 motors plugged into the control box. All the Weather Control systems will have - a transformer, touchpad, rain sensor plate, battery back up (battery not supplied) and safety switch or a hard wired loop. Full installation and owner’s instructions are included with each kit. The installation instructions will take you step by step through the install process and detail how to set up and use the Weather Control functions. ***You will need a 240V power outlet nearby. Organise an electrician to install one on your behalf if there is not an outlet available. Generally required in the eave, and close proximity to the Eclipse Opening Roof construction.

Weather Control Options - The Remote Control Unit is attachable to all weather control systems. The Remote Control is a radio frequency system that works well over distance and through most walls. It comes complete with a 9volt battery for the handset. The R/C control box plugs into the Weather Control box. You can program extra handsets or a new handset to a remote control box if required. The Battery Back Up feature is built in to all weather control systems. You can access this function by purchasing a battery and connecting it to the cables as shown in the diagram on the pages above. It should be tested periodically to ensure the battery is still in good order. Simply turn off the mains power to the control box and test the unit is still working under the battery back up power unit. The Smoke Sensor input is fitted to all weather controls. To fit a smoke sensor and have this function operational you will need a smoke sensor something like - the PSA Lifesaver model 4800Rl with a relay module LIFRK10A/9. The relay module clips on to the smoke detector and is sold separately. Use the No. 4 cable to connect the Weather Control and the smoke sensor. Please note the smoke sensor will require a 240volt outlet. Although this is a design feature it is not a failsafe and should not be advertised as such. A Weather Control Test Box and program is available to help determine the cause of any faults and pinpoint the issue. This test box is designed to be connected to the test socket of a weather control box and a laptop computer, while on site. It will give a read out on the motors, rain sensor, smoke operation, and the control box itself. Weather controls built after July 2006 will have this test socket. Directions for use will be provided with the test box unit.

A Motion Sensor can be a handy feature when fitted to a weather control system when being used as a show room display or a sample unit heading to a shopping centre, Home or Design show. The Motion Sensor will pick up the movement of people walking by and making the roof close. The roof will re-open of its own accord shortly after. Contact the Newcastle head office if you would like a Motion Sensor for a display area or some sort. A Heat Sensor is a new option that can be fitted in conjunction with a rain sensor to give further weather protection. The heat sensor works in a similar way to the rain sensor, but instead of sensing rain it is set to a desired temperature and when this temperature is reached the roof will be closed to block the sun further heating the area. At this stage it is not a standard option but it can be arranged on request. Connection to Home Automation Systems is becoming more and more frequent. When this is required expert help is provided by our Newcastle head office or direct from our supplier. Several projects have been completed and connection was achieved extremely smoothly. If you can obtain the name and a model number of the Home Automation systems, it will help our supplier assess the connection required.

8.2 – Remote Rain Control - For 1 to 8 Motors

The wiring for all the Remote Rain Control systems is very similar. The basic difference is the amount of motors you are able to plug into the control box i.e. a 200 series can have 1 to 2 motors, a 400 series can have 1 to 4 motors, a 800 series can have 1 to 8 motors plugged into the control box. The Remote Rain Control systems has optional components that can come with the control box & transformer – a Remote Handset & wall mount, wall mounted touchpad and rain sensor plate. Full installation and owner’s instructions are included with each kit. The installation instructions will take you step by step through the install process and detail how to set up and use the Rain Control system. ***You will need a 240V power outlet nearby. 8.3 – Simple Touch Pad Control – For 1 to 2 Motors

The Simple Touch pad or KISS switch is a basic system for one or two motors only. It has touch pad (push button) roof control but does not have rain sensor, battery back up or remote control options to connect. This switch will open and close the roof only. ***The Transformer is not supplied with the simple touchpad and must be purchased separately. You may also need to purchase a Mounting Block depending on the installation method. ***You will need a 240V power outlet nearby. Organise an electrician to install one on your behalf if there is not an outlet available. Generally required in the eave, and close proximity to the Eclipse Opening Roof construction.

8.4 – Toggle Switch Control - For 1 Motor

The Toggle switch control is the simplest for wiring and is a robust switch. This switch will open and close the roof only. ***You will also need to order a Transformer (or Solar Panel & Battery), a Switch Plate, a Fuse and a Mounting Block to complete the installation. ***You will need a 240V power outlet nearby. Organise an electrician to install one on your behalf if there is not an outlet available. This is required in the house eave, or close proximity to the Eclipse Opening Roof construction.

8.4 – Further Installation Information

How to replace a faulty Motor even if the motor will no longer rotate. Occasionally the electrical motor fails, either from a failed seal or supplier who seals and assemblies the motors uses too much silicon that can stop the contacts working. Unfortunately the electric motor is not repairable, but the stainless gearing on the assembly will still be fine, so you only need to replace the electric motor by removing it from the stainless gearing. To do this, undo and remove the fixing bolt through the motor arm that attaches to the louvre control arm - the louvres will close by their own weight, so be careful. Then operate the motor so the 4x attachment screw holes line up in the gear, undo the 4x screws and remove the motor assembly from its fixing point (the beam). 1. If the motor is not working, you will need to pop off the front round cover from the motor with a screwdriver.

2. Remove the cir-clip from the spindle.

3. Remove top motor section from the casing. You may need to work this out from the sides with a screwdriver. 4. Using long nose pliers remove the motor gear from the bottom of the motor casing. 5. You now have an empty motor casing that will allow the stainless steel gearing to rotate by hand. 6. Turn the stainless steel gearing until the holes line up with the 4x screws attaching the motor to the beam. Remove the screws. 7. Once the motor is removed from the beam, turn it over. You will see 3x-fixing screws. Undo these 3x screws to remove the motor only from the stainless steel gearing. Fit your new motor only using these same screws. Once new motor only has been fitted to the stainless steel gearing, refit the motor assembly to the beam with 4x motor mounting screws. Finally, refit the motor bolt through the motor arm and through the louvre control arm. You should then re-check the system to ensure everything is working fine.

Fixing a Single Louvre How to create two banks without extra beams and gutters:- When you have a bank of opening roof louvres that is to big for one motor, you can break the bank into 2x banks by using a beam with gutters down both sides or by fixing one louvre in the middle of the large bank. This fixed louvre acts as a joiner between the 2x banks; giving the end louvre of both banks something to close against. Note:- Without the fixed louvre the end louvres of bank 1 & 2 can clash and cause damage to the switching and drive systems of the opening roof. Fix a louvre by the following method:-

Have all louvres fitted with side Lock Angle and Track but do not fit the Control Arm or the motors at this stage.

Measure out the centre of the single large bank, or for alignment purposes, just decide which louvre you wish to fix.

Ensure the louvre to be fixed is sitting the correct way up, i.e. the top of the louvre is facing up.

Cut a small piece of flat bar, channel or angle, approximately 150mm long.

Fit the flat bar (channel or angle) on the topside of the louvre at the Free End Pin End. Drill and rivet from the bottom side through into the flat bar on top. Make sure you have the flat bar (channel or angle) overhanging on to the track and lock angle.

From the top drill and rivet the flat bar (channel or angle) into the track & lock angle at the Free End Pin End.

The louvre will not rotate but can still twist a little as the louvres from either bank 1 or bank 2 close on to it.

Now fit the 2x motors (1x for each bank) per the standard 1/3 - 2/3 rule

Continue installation as normal, i.e. fit the control arms for each bank, ensuring they will not make contact with each other when at full extents – bank 1 fully opened – bank 2 fully closed.

Offset Block/Bracket Details

Although the motor side of the louvre and the control arm must be a straight edge the opposing free end pin side can be on an angle. When opening roofs have an angled free end pin side beam you will need to fit offset blocks to keep the louvre attachment square and spaced correctly. The following is a description of material and the manufacture process for these off set blocks/brackets.

Draw the angled roof section to scale on paper, like eg below.

Using this drawn angle of the roof, design the offset block – draw a line that will allow a square and correct louvre attachment. Then draw back to the beam, finally add two attachment tabs. Ensure there is room for the next louvre to fit correctly spaced on the next offset block/bracket.

Organise a supplier to manufacture blocks from 2 - 3mm aluminium plate to your specifications. It is more economical to have 1x long piece folded and powder coated, the builder can then cut to size on site.

If that is not suitable, still have 1x long piece folded, then cut up into sections approximately 80mm wide in your warehouse, before powder coating and installation.

Keep your designs for future reference. Some angles may occur again in the future. See approximate shape and rough design’s below.

NOTE- Use 200mm wide Internal Gutter in angles sections.

If the Louvres are not closing properly there are a few things to check:-

1) Ensure the tracks area parallel/in line with each other 2) Check the spacing’s of the lock angle on the control arm, is it the same as the free end and motor pivot end? 3) Does the roof sit ok when the motor is disconnected? If all of the above are ok, then the following is the method our local construction team uses to rectify the gap:- 1) Cut the lock angle only on the control arm (NOT THE TRACK) at the start of the problem area. 2) Space out the gap a little further than normal, just a few mm should be satisfactory. Re-fix the lock angle. 3) Inspect the louvres from underneath to see if the now closes properly or if another cut is required. 4) If needed make a 2nd cut a little further along into the effected area by following steps 1 – 3. Another option is to fit the light strip to the louvres. The flexible nature of the light strip removes gaps 95% of the time. It also allows light through when the louvres are closed.

Screen Over the Opening Roof For areas that require a high level of bug protection, you can offer screening over the top of the Eclipse Opening Roof. Mechanical flashings can be folded and attached to the perimeter frame. These flashings are positioned to clear the rotation of the louvres and the control arm. Screened sections are manufactured on site, usually from a sturdy extrusion like doorframe section. You can form as many screens as necessary to cover over the roof. Standard procedure would be to manufacture the screens to span the same direction as the louvres, but only as wide as practical, perhaps 1.8m. One spreader bar in the middle of each screened frame is required to give added strength. A channel (25x25x1.6) can be fitted to one long side of each screened frame to allow the next frame to butt (slide) in to. The same channel can be screwed on to the top of the flashings for the screened frames to slide in, and be a guide for positioning. Approximate dimensions for the side flashings can be provided upon request. The flashings, doorframe section, spreader bar and channel should be available from a local aluminium outlet. We do suggest you use a strong mesh for the screening though. A quality fibreglass or even shade cloth is recommended for this purpose. This system is very useful for Eclipse Opening Roof projects over enclosed areas, screened enclosures and Paradise Rooms. The Z-flashings are also useful in preventing water penetration through the openings between the pins and beams - see weather flashing next page. On some pitched and flat Eclipse Opening Roof projects where the screening was not used, the z flashings were fitted for the sole purpose of extra protection against wind blowing in rain mist and also splashing in gutters.

Opening Roof Weather Flashing

For areas that require an extremely high level of blow or drip rain protection, you can offer the weather flashing. The Eclipse Opening Roof Weather Flashing is useful in preventing water penetration through the openings between the louvre ends (pins) and beams, where it is possible for wind blown rain, mist or splashes to find there way into the area below the roof. Mechanical flashings can be folded and attached to the perimeter frame on the Motor side only or to all sides. These flashings are positioned to clear the rotation of the louvres and the control arm.

Cleaning Instructions

As with all quality building products regular maintenance is essential to help eliminate

problems and repairs. The following page entitled “CUSTOMER SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE INFORMATION GUIDE”, is a standard cleaning instruction that should

be given to all customers on completion of their project. The instructions outline basic cleaning methods and correct procedures to ensure the long life of the roof system. The cleaning of the roof is an important part of keeping in the guidelines of the warranty. CARE & MAINTENANCE OF POWDERCOATED ALUMINIUM LOUVRE SYSTEM

Cleaning is desirable if the fine finish of powdercoated aluminium is to be preserved. Deterioration of the coating occurs mainly as a result of grime deposition and attack by contaminated moisture, which in a coastal environment contains chlorides and in an industrial or urban environment contains chlorides and sulphur compounds. Deposited grime absorbs contaminated moisture like a sponge and holds it against the powdercoated surface; this permits the attack to proceed thereby damaging the coating, which cannot be restored without removal. Paintwork by the seaside or in heavy industrial areas will need more regular cleaning. Every 12 weeks is recommended. For example often salts will build on the unexposed surfaces. This is because the surface facing the prevailing wind gets washed clean by the rain. The best method of cleaning is to use warm water with detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid harsh scourers, brushes and aggressive chemicals. All solvents can potentially damage powdercoating. If cleaning by solvent is required, methylated spirits or mineral turpentine may be used provided a small test spot shows no damage to the powdercoating. Be careful of spray and wipe over products as these may contain a small amount of strong solvent. Test carefully before use. As a general rule, it should be assumed that with outdoor applications, powder-coated aluminium should be cleaned with the same frequency as windows, using non-abrasive mild detergent solution. Acids used for brick cleaning and roof restoration can damage the coating and reduce its protective qualities. Surfaces should be protected to prevent such chemicals coming into contact.
