Overview

ECO Singa pore is orga nising a n ECO Living Programme fo r b loc ks 1 to 8

at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone B

Residents Committee (RC) with vo lunteers from Sta rbuc ks.

ECO Living Prog ramme is a c om munity grassroo ts p rog ramme tha t a ims

to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bit

for the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and waste

audits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas for

improvement.

This aud it wa s the fourth one for Lorong Lew Lian and foc used on the

theme of energy and w ater .

Objectives

To a ssess the utilities c ost of w a ter hea ter, washing m ac hine and

thermo-pot

To impress upon residents on the need to c onserve energy a nd

wa ter as we ll as the sec ond ary benefits

To share energy a nd water-saving tips

Overview of Audit 5

A representa tive from ECO Singa pore a rrived a t 8 am to p rep are the

nec essary logistics a t the Community Ha ll nea r bloc k 5.

15 en thusiastic vo lunteers, inc luding 12 from Sta rbuc ks partic ipa ted in

this audit. At 9.15am, the volunteers did a short self-introduction and

then we re to ld to d ivide into pa irs. Then the voluntee rs c ollec ted their

logistics. Each pair would get a clipboard containing the resident info

sheets, aud it c hec klists, volunteer infosheet a nd sta r stickers.

A briefing was conducted to run through with the

volunteers the procedure to follow when visiting the

residents.

At 9.45am, the voluntee rs then fa nned out to the va rious b loc ks.

The volunteers were ta sked to aud it the residents usage of w ashing

machine, water heater and thermo-pot. Using a simple formula, they

c ould c alcula te roug hly how muc h the resident wa s paying fo r usage of

these a pp lianc es through the ir ene rgy and water bills. The vo lunteers

shared with them energy and water-saving tips as well as the benefits

associated with such practices.

By 11.45am, all the volunteers had completed their allocated units and

returned to the Com munity Ha ll.

After the logistics were collected, a debrief was conducted for each

ind ividual group. At 12.30pm, the prog ramm e o ffic ia lly ended .

Results

A total of 45 households went through the audit. 24 residents were not

at home.

Feedb ac k

Although the number of volunteers were small, but they were very

enthusiastic. Most had done the audit before and even the new ones

c ould p ic k it up ea sily and enjoyed interac ting with the residents!

Many of the volunteers were

surprised to learn how costly

using the water heater is,

and that front-loaders are

more energy and water

efficient than top-loaders. A

volunteer shared that

leaving the front-loader door

open after use would

eliminate the m ould problem
