The school

Created in 1988 (with full official approval from the State*), it caters for pupils at the Kinder, Primary and Secondary levels in accordance with the National Education Curriculum.

From September, the International Bilingual School, which is going through accreditation at the moment to be an IB World School, will be offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The EPBI offers a bilingual education (French/English) to all its students, from the youngest child in kindergarten (3 years old) up to those doing the Baccalaureate (The French National Education Graduation) in a multinational environment.

The active pedagogy and the implemented ways of teaching allow every pupil to develop their sense of creativity early and this also enables the students to become independent thinkers and future responsible citizens of the world. This international awareness is increased by the wide opening the school has on the world. The EPBI welcomes students from many different backgrounds: – There are French students whose parents want their children to have a bilingual education. – There are French students who have returned from a stay abroad (a long or a short one) – There are students from many different nationalities (British, American, Australian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese …) – There are students who have completed a part of their schooling in a European School, a French Lycée or an International School. The School Philosophy EPBI is a demanding and ambitious school offering the road to success to each pupil. Pupils are at the heart of our teaching philosophy. We are extremely attached to our bilingualism, and even multilingualism here which supports the opportunity of a world education. Teaching based on academic skills which develops cognitive skills is paramount. However, these skills alone are not sufficient for an international education. Therefore, affective and meta-cognitive skills are actively developed in order to favour creative thinking and a critical mind. Academic skills, as well as thinking, communication, social and research skills are extremely important too.

Teaching is based on the understanding of concepts, boosted by research and group work in both local and world contexts.

Our values :

-‐ Creative and critical thinking, -‐ Rigour and personal fullfilment, -‐ Respect and tolerance.

The International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Progamme offers a stimulating and high quality education as well as international reality awareness to pupils between the ages of 16 and 19.

Since 2013, the International Bilingual School, along with its educational management and the teaching team has been working to become an IB World School. Since September, 2014, the International Bilingual School is “an IB Candidate School” with the aim of teaching the IB Diploma. The International Bilingual School wishes to start teaching the IB Diploma Programme from September, 2016. The objectives of the EPBI are to:

-‐ Favour the development of the personality and the potential of every pupil by helping them to think in a creative way, to argue in a critical way and to be open to learning and to various cultures.

-‐ Give excellent skills to all pupils in at least 2 languages (French and English) which will enable them to build intercultural relations with others, whatever their nationality.

-‐ Promulgate a level of knowledge, skills and understanding allowing them to study all over the world. -‐ Encourage students to develop a sense of self-respect and respect for others and to allow each pupil to become

a respectful and responsible citizen of the world. In the sixth form (15-18 years), students integrate an IB “2nde” class, followed by the final two years, 11th Grade or Year 12 and 12th Grade or Year 13, doing the IB Diploma Programme. The IB programmes are based on various international ideas and best practices.

These programmes initiate international awareness and encourage greater thinking beyond the immediate local environment.

The IB offers a greater-developed programme encouraging learners to enhance their intellectual curiosity, knowledge, awareness and determination to succeed.

The IB programmes are successful throughout the world because :

- the learner is at the centre of all teaching ; - they develop efficient teaching methods and learning skills ; - different world contexts are integrated into the course to help learners open up to different languages and cultures ; - they explore significant content by developing disciplinary and interdisciplinary understanding responding to

rigorous international benchmarks. The IB Diploma programme is balanced and rigorous

It helps to develop the intellectual, social and emotional well-being of the students and is recognised by the best universities worldwide.

All the IB programmes, including the IB diploma programme, stress the importance of learner development, which conforms to the qualities presented in the IB learner profile.

The IB learner profile describes a wide range of far-reaching aptitudes and human responsibilities. These qualities involve commitment towards helping all members of the entire school community to respect themselves, each other and the whole world they live in.

Learners must also be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, carers, risk takers, balanced and reflective.

The teaching of the IB Diploma Programme at the International Bilingual School is based on the following educational principles :

-‐ research,

-‐ conceptual understanding,

-‐ local and international contexts,

-‐ team work,

-‐ formative and summative assessment.

Kindergarten PS (Petite Section) – MS (Moyenne Section) – GS (Grande Section)

Admission conditions

Each child with his/her family comes for a pre-arranged appointment at the school. Children can join a class once they have turned 2.

The educational organization There are 3 levels in kindergarten: Petite Section for 3 year olds, Moyenne Section for 4 year olds and Grande Section for 5 year olds.Generally speaking, pupils join the class best suited to their stage of development. In kindergarten, we offer an early start to learning both French and English in equal portions, and all the classes are held in total immersion conditions. This is remarkably beneficial for the students not only linguistically but also cognitively.

This early learning is based principally on expression, focusing mainly on listening and oral activities. Our students evolve in an environment which stimulates them through interaction, by playing with other students and through games. The children develop their autonomy, their self-confidence, their self-respect and respect for others. We encourage curiosity and the taking of initiative. The educational team is composed of both native English and French speaking teachers. Each teacher is accompanied by a kindergarten assistant at all times. During this period when verbal communication is favoured, the kindergarten classes have the most simple yet effective methods of learning

Petite Section the children will be totally immersed in English. The kindergarten teacher, a native English speaker, will help them develop their creative capacities for learning. In the classroom, at break time, in the canteen, they will talk, listen and sing in English.

Moyenne Section and Grande Section The students are in immersion on alternate days. - They study early learning subjects in English with a native speaking teacher. - They study French for Mathematics and French with a native speaking teacher.

According to their ages, activities such as psychomotricity and baby tennis are practised each week.

The International Baccalaureate International (IB) Study Programme

The diploma programme is made up of six subject groups and a DP common core. The teaching languages in the different subject groups (group 3 to 6) are English or French depending on the linguistic profile of the learner.

Bilingual learners can study one of their subjects in group 3 or 4 in a different language to that in group 1.

The study programme is made up of six subject groups and the common core.

The Common Core, which is made up of three parts, aims to broaden the learner’s educational experience and to encourage them to apply this knowledge and skill later.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which helps students to think about the nature of knowledge and to examine how we know what we claim to know. The Dissertation, allows learners to carry out personal and independent research ending in a written dissertation of 4000 words. The Creativity, Action, Service Programme, which allows learners to accomplish a project made up of these three concepts.

Thanks to this common core of the diploma programme, learners think about the nature of knowledge, carry out independent research and project work which often involve some sort of community service.

The Six Subject Groups

1st Year IB Diploma Programme (Year12 / 11th grade) 2nd Year IB Diploma Programme (Year 13 / 12th grade)

Choice of subjects in the IB Diploma Programme

IB Diploma students choose a subject from the frist 5 groups and an extra subject from either group 6 (The Arts) or a second subject from either groups 1 to 4.

Certain subjects will be studied at Higher level (HL), whereas others will be at Standard Level (SL).

HL and SL courses differ in scope but are measured according to the same grade descriptors.

However, students at HL are expected to demonstrate a greater body of knowledge, understanding and skills at this higher level. Each student must take at least three (but no more than four) subjects at higher level, and the remaining at standard level.

Standard level subjects require 150 teaching hours whereas the higher level are comprised of 240 hours.

Group 1 : Literature Studies

In group 1, students study literature, especially translated literacy works. Students take their studies in a language in which they are academically competent.

Through each course in group 1, students are able to develop:

• a personal appreciation of language and literature • skills in literary criticism using a range of texts from different periods, styles and genres • an understanding of the formal, stylistic and aesthetic qualities of texts • strong powers of expression, both written and oral • an appreciation of cultural differences in perspective

Through studies in language and literature, the DP aims to develop a student's lifelong interest in language and literature, and a love for the elegance and richness of human expression.

Group 2 : Language Acquisition

The main emphasis of the modern language courses is on the acquisition and use of language in a range of contexts and for different purposes while, at the same time, promoting an understanding of another culture through the study of its language.

Language B (SL and HL) : French, English or German

Language B Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) are language acquisition courses for students with some previous experience of learning the language.

While studying the language, students also explore the culture(s) connected with it.

Higher and standard levels are differentiated by the recommended teaching hours, the depth of syllabus coverage, the required study or literature at HL, and the level of difficulty and requirements of the assessment tasks and criteria.

The range of purposes and situations for using language in the language B courses extends well beyond those for language ab initio.

The course is organised into themes. Three core themes are required: communication and media, global issues, and social relationships. In addition, at both HL and SL, teachers select two more themes from five options provided.

Finally, two works of literature are studied at HL only.

Group 3 : Individuals and Societies

Subjects available are:

• Business and Management in English or French,

• History in English or French.

Studying any one of these subjects provides for the development of a critical appreciation of:

• human experience and behaviour

• the varieties of physical, economic and social environments that people inhabit

• the history of social and cultural institutions.

In addition, each subject is designed to foster in students the capacity to identify, to analyse critically and to evaluate theories, concepts and arguments relating to the nature and activities of individuals and societies.

 o Business and management

The business management course is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of business management theories, as well as their ability to apply a range of tools and techniques.

Students learn to analyse, discuss and evaluate business activities at local, national and international levels.

The course covers a range of organisations from all sectors, as well as the socio-cultural and economic contexts in which those organisations operate.

The course covers the key characteristics of business organisation and environment and the business functions of human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing and operations management.

o History

The Diploma Programme history course aims to promote an understanding of history as a discipline, including the nature and diversity of its sources, methods and interpretations. It also helps students to gain a better understanding of the present through critical reflection upon the past. The IB Diploma History course provides both structure and flexibility, fostering an understanding of major historical events in a global context. It requires students to make comparisons between similar and dissimilar solutions to common human situations, whether they be political, economic or social. It invites comparisons between, but not judgments of, different cultures, political systems and national traditions. It also requires the development of critical thinking and understanding of the multiple interpretations of history.

Group 4 : Sciences

Two subjects are offered in this group :

Biology in French, Chemistry in English.

Students study concepts, theories, models and techniques which underlie each subject and therefore deepen their understanding of scientific methodology. The compulsory project encourages students to appreciate the environmental, social and ethical implications of science. This interdisciplinary exercise is carried out as group work. It allows students the possibility to explore scientific solutions to world problems.

Group 5 : Maths

Two courses in Mathematics are available: Mathematics at SL and HL in English and French.

These two courses serve to accommodate the range of needs, interests and abilities of students, and to fulfil the requirements of various university and career aspirations.

The aims of these courses are to enable students to:

develop mathematical knowledge, concepts and principles; develop logical, critical and creative thinking; employ and refine their powers of abstraction and generalisation. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the international dimensions of Mathematics and the multiplicity of its cultural and historical perspectives. Group 6 : The Arts

The following subject is available to students in French at higher level or standard level and at SL in English: Cinema

The subjects in the Arts allow a high degree of adaptability to different cultural contexts. The emphasis is on creativity in the context of disciplined, practical research into the relevant genres. In addition, each subject is designed to foster critical, reflective and informed practice, help students understand the dynamic and changing nature of the arts, explore the diversity of arts across time, place and cultures, and express themselves with confidence and competence.

Cambridge University Exams KET, PET, FCE, CAE, YLE

Cambridge exams are well known in the French Academic environment and in the professional one. They are representative of a reliable English level and are recognized internationally. Exam centers are controlled in France by the Cambridge Examinations Officer (CEO).

Certification preparation: specific preparation for exams according to level and age of each pupil.

YLE (Young Learners English test/Starters-Movers-Flyers) for Primary School pupils There are three levels: Starters, Movers (A1*), Flyers (A2*) Objectives of these tests: - to test the use of English in a precise and fair way. - to present a positive first impression of exams at an international level. - to promote efficient teaching and knowledge. - to encourage future teaching and knowledge.

KET (Key English Test) (A2*) The first level of the Cambridge University examinations is the KET. This exam validates a pre-intermediate level of English and represents the first step towards higher level recognition for students wanting to progress to the Preliminary English Test (PET). PET (Preliminary English Test) (B1*) This exam, corresponding to an intermediate level, allows validation of English which will allow you to “get by” in any everyday situation. This is the “threshold” level which is defined by the Council of Europe.

FCE (First Certificate in English) (B2*) This exam corresponds to an upper-intermediate level, internationally recognised in business, trade and industry. Related fields of work include: PR, Bilingual or Trilingual Secretary, Personal Assistant, International Trade, Hotel and Tourism, Banking, Transport, Travel Agents, International Airlines, Embassy work, Interpreting and Translating, IT, EU organisations, etc. ...

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) (C1*) The CAE is an advanced level of English which is a lot higher and demanding than the FCE. The CAE consists of real English and validates an advanced English level for learners wishing to use the language in a professional context. This exam is usually taken at the end of very high level studies. Related fields of work include: PR, Bilingual or Trilingual Secretary, Personal Assistant, International Trade, Hotel and Tourism, Banking, Transport, Travel Agents, International Airlines, Embassy work, Interpreting and Translating, IT, EU organisations, etc. ...

Discovery classes @ trips abroad Each year, the pupils from Moyenne Section & Grande Section in Kindergarten and Cours Préparatoire who wish to participate, can go on a five day discovery trip with their teachers. Mini – school trips

Outings and cultural trips are fully integrated into our project: Cité de l’Espace (Space City in Toulouse), Palais de la Découverte and Cité des Sciences in Paris, Futuroscope in Poitiers...

Discovery trips This educational trip is a privileged moment in the school year. During the outing, a real relationship is built up between the children and the adults, the hierarchy changes and a new set of moral values is installed. This trip is based on new experiences and an unknown living environment, on discoveries and doing new activities such as being on a farm,in a garden, learning about astronomy, working with ponies, learning about nature and participating in workshops such as bread-making, jam-making, learning about the flora and the fauna in the area, learning how to make a herbarium. These outings give a sense to what learning is about and act as springboard for acquiring new skills. These educational field trips are the successful conclusion to an educational project, but it also marks the start of new initiatives.

School trips abroad Since the school opened, the Private International Bilingual School has organized a two-week trip abroad. This is an optional trip, set up for students in the classes CE2 To Terminale. It is planned very carefully within the educational framework of the school.

The pupils, supervised by members of the teaching staff, discover different cultures whilst visiting the different english speaking destinations such as the USA, Canada, but also nearer countries such as Malta.

Canteen

General Information Canteen meals Canteen meals are delivered by a catering firm, refrigerated at +3° C and reheated on the premises. The list of dishes served, varied and adapted to the season, is drawn up each week. Rules and guidelines regarding nutritional requirements are taken into consideration when preparing dishes. Meals are nevertheless typical of those served in French family settings. BIO: an organic meal (hors d’oeuvre, main dish, cheese and dessert) is served once a week. For those suffering from allergies or having to follow special diets, lunch box meals are recommended, the school canteen being limited in its capacity to serve meals ‘à la carte’. Lunch Box Meals Lunch box meals (home-prepared lunches) can be left each morning at the school in a basket provided specifically for this purpose. They are served at noon just like regular school meals (“canteen meals”) after being reheated in a microwave oven. Payments Annual fixed fee (Included in the school contract) Fees for canteen meals and Lunch boxes are based on the whole year. No reimbursement can be made if a student is absent.

CLEEBI has replaced the traditional correspondence note book for a long time now. However, it is only for general information, any personal messages or information will be dealt with by email via the secure website www.noteebi.fr (access to this site is made with individual user names and passwords.) Thanks to the RSS on then site, each parent is kept up to date on what is happening at the schoolin real time. You can find

• Different one off messages: dates of the next school outing, the new time-table for end of term tests, the canteen menu for the following week, etc…

• Information which remains valid for the whole of the school year: the names of the school teachers, class organisation, lists of school books and material, practical information, a calendar of school events, etc…

CLEEBI also allows you to be informed immediately in the case of an important event (Weather alerts for example) which may affect the opening hours of the school. New instructions may be thus given, allowing everyone to get organised as a result.

It is therefore essential to sign up to CLEEBI as soon as you join the school. In order to receive all the messages from CLEEBI just go to the site www.cleebi.com, click on “s’abonner au flux RSS-Articles” then on “ajouter”.
