PROFILE

École Supérieure du Bois ‑ Nantes

The Ecole Supérieure du Bois trains engineers in three years. Teaching is directed toward science and technology of the material along with human relations, management, law, business policies and foreign languages. This training is further reinforced by an 9 month internship either in France or abroad. The Ecole Supérieure du Bois was established in 1934 in Paris. Since 1993 it has been located in a modern setting in Nantes where there are diverse universities and �grandes ecoles’. In addition, the school benefits from the area that has the second largest concentration in France of industries dealing with the primary and secondary treatment of wood materials. Today, over 2,500 former engineering students from the school are participating in the expansion and leadership of companies in the wood industry in France and abroad. Main programmes of study Engineering and technology of wood (courses deal with the structure of wood, forestry and transforming wood to the economics of the wood sector, construction and the management wood projects, and wood in foreign trade). Research Research projects carried out within the school are based on wood and wood composites, construction and housing, industrialization of forest products. The major part of the projects is in applied research because students have the opportunity to work on real problems that companies can then take advantage of. Strengths • With only 350 students, the Ecole Supérieure du Bois offers a dynamic, stimulating atmosphere that allows students to feel at ease with the program, to develop innovative projects and important industry professional relationships. Each student is personally welcomed, within a privileged environment.• The school encourages learning from projects. The decision for a project, financial dimension, team management and communication are all realities students confront by working on different projects throughout their studies.• The Ecole Supérieure du Bois has 30%  foreign students,  coming  from such countries as Russia, Chile, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Latvia, Taiwan, Germany, Brazil, China, Morocco, Tunisia and Cameroon. Every year,

the school increases its international commitment with new partnerships in the areas of student exchanges and professors, research projects and internships organized abroad in more than 80 countries.• In  September  2003,  the  Ecole  Supérieure  du  Bois  launched  an  unpu-blished training course in Europe, entitled �International Timber Trade.� As its name indicates, this training’s mission is to give students the necessary skills to become future experts in the international wood trade. Location Nantes, the sixth largest city in France, is located 40 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean and its beaches. Nantes is a leading center for the agri-food industry, aeronautics and electronics sectors. She was elected as the first city in Europe for its quality of life by Times Magazine and will be European Green Capital in 2013. The city’s dynamic quality also is reflected in its universities with some 45,000 students and 100 research centers. A cultural revival also has occurred in recent years, making Nantes a lively center for the arts.
