The UN Millennium Development Goals

At the Millennium Summit in September 2000,

all the governments meeting thereset themselves eight goals, which

aim to halve world poverty by 2015.

Halve the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day.Halve the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.

Ensure that ALL children enroll in,

and complete,primary schooling.

Ensure that girls have the same accessto schooling as boys.

Promote equality for all women.

Cut infant and child deaths

by two-thirds.

Reduce by three-quarters

the proportion of women

dying in childbirth.

Halt and begin to reversethe spread of HIV/AIDS.

Begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

Halve the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water.

Transform the lives of 100 million slum dwellers.

Reverse the loss of environmental resources.

Address trade, debt, aid, public health and

technology issues to promote economic growth

and poverty reduction.

All of this by 2015.

•fiber optics – thin transparent fibers of glass or plastic that are enclosed by material of a lower refractive index and that transmit light throughout their length by internal reflections

•biofuels – a fuel (as wood or ethanol) composed of or produced from biological raw materials

AngolaElectricity Distribution Rehabilitation and Hydropower Development – USTDA is providing a $626,850 grant to help the Angolan government to help develop plans for two cities, Cuchi and Luena, to create a modern electricity system that can generate sufficient power. The government is looking to do this by building hydroelectric plants. The hope is to provide more efficient electrical power to improve economic development. The government is looking at various companies to work on this project.

How Can Standard of Living be Improved?

LiberiaGreater Monrovia Fiber Optic Ring – USTDA is providing $303,000 to the Liberia Telecommunications Corporation (LTC) for a study to decide if it is affordable to build a fiber optic ring around Liberia’s capital city, Monrovia. This will increase Liberia’s ability to communicate with computers, televisions, and phones. The study will decide how to best divide the funds for the project.

How Can Standard of Living be Improved?

UgandaBalancing Biofuels and Food Security – This $527,280 project is supporting the Ugandan government in its efforts to use available resources, such as biofuels (made from wood or corn) in Uganda to create energy. Uganda is currently facing an energy crisis, as drought has severely reduced their hydroelectric power production, and oil prices have increased the costs of transportation and electricity production. A company has been chosen to complete this project. How Can Standard of Living be Improved?

ZambiaAirports Master Plan – USTDA is providing $725,000 to the Zambian government to develop a plan for the four international airports in the cities of Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola, and Mfuwe. The study will include a plan for the modernizing of the four airports. The Government of Zambia (GOZ) has placed the highest priority on the development of these four airports for 2006-2010. The government has chosen a company to work on this project.
