Increasing Accessibility to Higher Education | 11
Recognizing that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce, the Detroit Scholarship Fund (DSF) program, administered by the Chamber on behalf of Gov. Rick Snyder, helped sign up 5,523 eligible students from 55 high schools between July 2013 and December 2014. Of those, 608 are currently enrolled in college courses – roughly double the number enrolled as full-time students from the previous year.
The DSF team conducts multiple outreach events throughout the year to educate students and school counselors from kindergarten to 12th grade about the opportunities for a tuition-free path to an associate degree or technical certificate. The program is funded through the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation and subsidizes tuition and fees for students who do not receive enough financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligibility is open to Detroit residents who attend a high school in the city.
In addition to the DSF, the Chamber has operated the Detroit Compact program for over 20 years. The program currently provides a tuition-free education at four-year universities to over 300 students from Detroit. Combined, these two programs represent the largest scholarship effort operating in the city of Detroit. Chamber leadership is continuing to work with a number of education stakeholders to better integrate and expand the programs for future students.
