Up Next ECU opens its AAC slate in 2019. The Pirates will open their conference season with a road trip to Rulane, as the two teams clash on Jan. 5.

Pirates at Home So far this season, ECU is 7-0 inside Minges Coliseum, moving ECU’s all-time record to 358-196 in the building. The Pirates are shooting for their third straight winning record at home, following an 11-5 home mark in 2017-18 and an 8-7 ledger in 2016-17. Overall, ECU has posted a winning record inside Minges 32 out of the 42 seasons it has played there. The last time ECU won its first seven home games was during the 2013-14 season, when the Pirates won their first 11 games in Minges Coliseum.

Education Day ECU’s annual Education Day was a smashing success, as students from all over Pitt County Schools came to Minges Coliseum to watch the Pirates take on Liberty. The crowd size swelled all the way to 6,276, setting a new ECU women’s basketball attendance record. It was the biggest crowd to watch a Pirates’ game since 8,452 fans attended ECU’s game at UConn on Jan. 4, 2017. The top five crowds in Minges Coliseum history are now all Education Day crowds as well.

Gee’s Game-Winner Justice Gee had a huge fourth-quarter to help the Pirates beat Liberty, culminating in her burying a three-pointer at the buzzer. Along with her buzzer-beater, Gee added a pair of layups and three assists during the final stanza. She also pulled in a defensive rebound with just over 30 seconds remaining and then another offensive rebound to set up the final ECU possession. It was the second straight game Gee has been in the spotlight, as she led ECU with a career-high 12 points at Charlotte.

Monk’s Big Day Lashonda Monk had a career-day to help ECU beat Wake Forest. The sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., finished with a career-high 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Monk also added five rebounds and nine steals. The nine steals are the fourth-highest total in ECU history, but are not a career-high, as Monk swiped 10 steals last year against SMU. Monk is currently averaging 3.8 steals per game, an average that leads the AAC and is 11th in the country.

Campbell’s Block Party In the win over Monmouth, Destiny Campbell was dominant on the defensive end of the floor. The senior from Larinburg, N.C., racked up seven blocked shots and three steals. The seven blocks is tied for third all-time at ECU in single-game rejections and was the most since Ondrea Shaw swatted 10 shots on Dec. 9, 2014. Campbell added 17 points on the offensive end in the win. Campbell’s seven blocks are tied for the second highest total in the country. Campbell added five blocks to go along with nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds against USC Upstate.

Mealing Takes Over On Wednesday, Dec. 26, ECU Director of Athetics Jon Gilbert announced that assistant coach Nicole Mealing will serve as the Pirates’ acting head coach for the remainder of the season. The Pirates had gotten off to a 9-2 start under interim head coach Chad Killinger, who had assumed interim duties in October. Killinger will depart his post to take a leave of absence to address a non-life threatening health issue following a recent medical evaluation. Mealing becomes the 12th head coach in program history and just the second to take over midseason, following Gene Hill who became the interim head coach midway through the 2001-02 season.

Forcing Turnovers Twice this season, ECU has forced at least 34 turnovers, including 35 forced turnovers in the win over Wake Forest. The Pirates are causing 23.6 turnovers this season, which is the second-highest mark in the AAC. ECU has a turnover margin of +7.22, the best mark in the conference and an average that places the Pirates 13th in the NCAA.

Pirates Picked Eighth in AAC Preseason Poll ECU was picked to finish in eighth in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll following a 16-15 record last season in which it finished in seventh in the 12-team league with a 7-9 record. UConn was picked to finish in first with 11 first-place votes and 121 total points while USF was picked second with 111 points and one first-place vote. Houston (95), UCF (92), Cincinnati (74), Temple (72), SMU (55), ECU (46), Tulane (42), Wichita State (35), Memphis (25) and Tulsa (24) round out the poll results.

Freshmen Picks up AAC Weekly Honors Lashonda Monk and Ariyana Williams became the first ECU players to earn AAC Freshman of the Week honors last season. Williams earned the honor on December 26, 2017 after scoring a career-high 34 points in a 103-37 win over Savannah State on Dec. 20. Williams shot 60 percent from the field (12-for-20) and from three-point range (6-for-10). Monk was honored on February 5, 2018 after she averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 steals, 6.5 assists and shot 55 percent (15-of-27) from the field in ECU’s two victories. Monk scored a career-high 19 points in the Pirate’s comeback win against Wichita State on Jan. 30, before eclipsing that mark four days later, by scoring 20 points in ECU’s win over SMU on Feb. 3.

Pirates Bestow Awards At the conclusion of the 2017-18 season, the Pirates announced the ECU Women’s Basketball Awards. Monk was named both the Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Outstanding Player of the Year. Williams earned the Offensive Player of the Year award. Desiree Corbin was the recipient of the Janay Davis Award while recent graduate Thais Oliveira was awarded the ECU First Award.

Evans Signs For Pirates During the November signing period, the ECU women’s basketball team saw Ryann Evans from Columbia, Md., sign a letter of intent to join the Pirate program. Evans currently plays for Archbishop Spalding High School and also competed for the Maryland Belles AAU program. Evans is ranked No. 313 by All-Star Girls Report in her prep class.
