On the weeend o 57 Api,

    ove 700 sugica tainees

    om acoss the Uk gatheed

    in Mancheste o the annua

    Association o Sugeons in Taining

    (ASiT) coneence.

In acked conference halls and eeting

    roos, toics including siulation,

    iroving eergency and urgent care

and roviding safe eergency cross-cover were discussed and deated.

There were also the usual oortunities

    to question royal college residents

and other surgical leaders, lus 13

    re-conference courses to irove

    surgical skills.

    With the ucoing ulication of

    individual consultant outcoes fro nine

surgical audits and registries, there was

anxiety aong trainees that, as of June,

    training oortunities in the oerating

    theatre could deteriorate as consultants

    ay e discouraged fro delegating

    ore colex cases.

There was also a sense of widesread

    uncertainty regarding the role and

    function of Health Education England

(HEE) and Local Education and Training

boards (LETbs), and how this would

    affect training delivery.

It was taken as read that the Euroean

    Working Tie Regulations (EWTR)

    have, and continue to, ioverish

    surgical training.

    WITH THE

    UpCOmING

    pUbLICATION

    OF OUTCOmES,

    THERE WAS

    ANXIETY AmONG

    TRAINEES THAT

    TRAINING

    OppORTUNITIES

    IN THEATRE

    COULD

    DETERIORATE AS

    CONSULTANTS

    mAY bE

    DISCOURAGED

    FROm

    DELEGATINGmORE COmpLEX

    CASES.

    Trainees resolutely acceted that coing

into the oerating theatre on their days

off was ar for the course.

Yet any stressed that this sense of

accetance should not curtail efforts to

    reduce the iact of EWTR.

    Trainees and consultants ust continue

to ush for an agreeent etween

the social partners, and exibilityvia the junior doctors and consultants

    contract.

    Trainees were encouraged to axiise

    all availale training oortunities,

and any of the seakers rearked

on their ride and satisfaction at

eing asked to address such a large

    grou of dedicated, atient-centred

    individuals who are coitted

    to their own rofessional develoent.

    At the eeting Andrew beaish,

    Secialty Registrar in General Surgery,

was elected president of ASiT for

    20132014.

The winner of the 2013s Silver Scalel

Award for excellence in surgical training

    was Clive Heworth, Consultant General

    and Colorectal Surgeon at Queens

    Hosital, Essex.
