Get pre-loved up!The new way to buy labels for lessPre-loved - that’s fashion speak for pre-owned - designer clothes are coming out of high-end closets, ready for you to snap up for a snip at Encore in Moseley village.

With the party season fast approaching and weather getting cooler what better time than now to go bargain hunting.

Paul Smith, Prada, Boss, Georgio Armani, Chloe, Jaeger, Marc Jacobs and Burberry are just some of the designer labels available, but you’ll also find high street labels. Prices start from as little as £15.00 for a Karen Millen dress.

I really get my kicks out of finding a good bargain and can be found browsing the rails there at least twice a month to see what’s new.

And if like me you are watching those pennies then why not dig out the quality designer and high street items from your own wardrobe that you are really never going to wear again, and turn them into cash. Make sure they are clean, in season and in perfect condition and take them along to Encore.

Encore will review the items, price them and sell them in the shop. Then you get 50% of the sale price. For you, it’s an opportunity to clear out the wardrobe and make some money - at the same time as picking up something gorgeous for yourself.

Encore is on Alcester Rd close to the main crossroads in Moseley.

Interview with a bearIf you thought Togademus was just a lovely toy shop on Poplar Road in Kings Heath, then think again. It is also home to an extraordinary bear whose name just happens to be Togademus too. What a co-incidence!

Togademus the bear is occasionally seen in the shop and whenever he’s there he insists on giving every customer 10% off. If you follow him on Twitter you’ll always know when he’ll be there, or keep a close eye on the shop window where he loves to sit.

We sent along our lead reporter to find out more.

Christmas is a very busy time for a toy shop how do you think you will cope? Oh, the shop is most fun when it’s full of people so we don’t mind at all. It is lovely to see happy children playing with the toys.

What kind of toys do you have on your shelves this year? Proper toys! The kind for children to live with, play with, learn from and enjoy, especially lots of traditional and wooden toys.

The shop looks quite up-market from outside – is it expensive? Not at all. Some of the toys are only £1 and most of the toys that people buy are between £5 and £10. But we do have some really special toys too that cost a bit more.

So, Togademus, is it your shop then? I couldn’t really say that, my family do most of the work.

I see. And can people find out about the shop before arriving? Well there’s the website. It’s www.togademus.co.uk and I know they are always putting photos on there so people can see new toys when they arrive. And it’s got opening times and directions as well.

Cool. So, finally, what are you hoping for this Christmas? Oh I’m easy to please – I just like to see happy faces.

From celebrating the festive season on an island made of rubbish to decorating a Christmas tree with visitors’ own handmade creations, the most popular arts centre in the Midlands is offering something different for everyone this winter.

Starting with a brand new family show from the widely-acclaimed Lyngo Theatre, Knick Knack and Doo Dad – Reasons to be Cheerful (Tue 13 Nov – Sun 2 Dec) is an interactive performance which encourages children to make noise and get involved in the action, as Knick and Doo try to make the best of their smelly surroundings, shipwrecked on a rubbish island. There are also supporting craft workshops on offer to inspire creative kids.

In December, due to popular demand, mac birmingham will welcome back Jane Packman Company’s The Woods, an immersive installation which was first shown in the centre’s gallery in February 2011. Inspired by an autumn spent under the trees, the sensory environment created allows visitors to explore and play, or contemplate and think. The Woods will be accompanied by a celebratory performance piece within the space, entitled The Wake. Reflecting on the year gone by, and looking ahead to the promise of spring, this imaginative and intimate piece of theatre promises to be an unmissable experience.

Marketplace will also return in December, for two weekends of mac birmingham’s bustling Contemporary Craft Fairs (Sat 8

& Sun 9, Sat 15 & Sun 15 Dec). Visitors will be able to buy and commission work from some of the region’s finest makers of jewellery, ceramics, glassware and more, making it the perfect opportunity to snap up a Christmas gift for friends, family or even themselves.

Also, across the whole festive season there is a chance to follow the adventures of Mister Volder Goes to the City. Based on an ambiguous short story, the first collaboration between artists Rebecca Hurst and Ben Pacey tells the tale of a mysterious character through atmospheric images created using low-fi digital techniques.

Throughout December, visitors will also be able to adorn mac birmingham’s Christmas Tree with their own decorations inspired by The Woods and Mister Volder Goes to the City with free drop-in activities using recyclable materials. Full details will be announced shortly through www.macarts.co.uk.

Tickets for all performances can be bought from mac birmingham’s website www.macarts.co.uk, or by calling 0121 446 3232.

Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthSpiced Celeriac with Lemon (serves 6)By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book

Ingredients:

• 1 large or 2 small celeriac• 3 tbsp olive oil• a pinch of smoked paprika • a pinch of cayenne pepper• a pinch of ground cinnamon• grated zest of 1 lemon• juice of 1½ lemons • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Peel the celeriac, cut into slices 5mm-1cm thick, then cut the slices into long, thin sticks. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the celeriac sticks and fry for about 15 minutes, until slightly browned. At this point sprinkle with the spices, lemon zest and juice and 100ml water. Simmer for about 10 minutes, until the celeriac is just tender. Season to taste, adding more lemon juice if necessary.

TLC funds minibus for Focus BirminghamThe grand sum of £126,000 raised by TLC Lottery for Focus Birmingham in 2011 is enough to fund the purchase and running costs of one of their minibuses.

The minibuses provide a vital lifeline to the 90 people per day who use the day services at the charity’s centre in Woodville Road, Harborne, by picking them up and taking them back home.

Service users are of all ages and have visual impairment and often other disabilities. The day service, which has been run by Focus for many years, provides social and learning opportunities. This service also provides families and carers with a much valued break.

During the day the vans don’t stand idle; they are all over the place taking individuals out for activities, trips and the like.

Without the support of TLC Lottery players, it would be difficult to extend this wonderful service to so many people, some of whom would then be unable to attend the Centre.

This is only a small part of the work of Focus Birmingham – more details can be found at www.focusbirmingham.org.uk or by telephoning 0121 478 5201

To join TLC Lottery with a chance to win £1,000 every week whilst supporting Focus Birmingham, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Acorns Children’s Hospice visit www.tlclottery.co.uk or telephone 01564 825047.

Dignity in dementia

Behind the beautiful and slightly grand façade of Sunrise Senior Living in Edgbaston you might simply assume there lays an efficient, high quality care home.

You would be right to think high quality and efficient, but in reality this care home is much more. It has been designed to be as homely and comforting as possible. And the “Reminiscence” neighbourhood, which is where the residents with dementia live, is a home from home even down to the friendly dog Zack along with a budgie and tropical fish.

As you walk around the spacious communal areas there are four life skills centres that are designed to remind people of the happy times that they often go back to when living with dementia. So there is a 1930’s office with antique furniture and typewriter, a nursery corner with a cot and a number of baby dolls & clothing,

there is a work station with tools and a dressing table with make-up, perfume, scarves and jewellery, ties and cufflinks.

There is also a “Snoezelen” Room- an innovative area with lights, sounds and objects that have proven to create a calm and pleasant retreat from the busier activity areas.

The residents each have their own private en suite room with their memory box outside but much of the space is communal and there is always 30s and 40s music playing in the background. For some fresh air they can enjoy the beautiful terrace which overlooks a little bit of inner city countryside. There is also a

herb garden and flowers to attend to for those residents with green fingers.

Every Friday afternoon there is a social get-together for the whole community with a musician, singer or group. Residents and staff enjoy these together and people can sing along, dance, or just soak up the fun with a cup of tea and a piece of home made cake.

Residents are encouraged to help out in the family kitchen area, as many, particularly the ladies, slip back to a time when they spent many an hour preparing meals for their families. So peeling potatoes, laying tables and washing up bring a sense of calm purpose to their day.

The specially trained carers form rich relationships with residents and their families by getting to know them in every detail- from what time they like to wake up to favourite meals and activities. The neighbourhood is small and cosy which leads to a feeling of warm homeliness.

If you have a parent, family member or neighbour who is diagnosed with dementia you are immediately faced with a number of very difficult choices. And you may be under the impression that a place like Sunrise is out of your reach financially. But in fact it is surprisingly affordable… just ask.

Sunrise also provide Residential & Nursing care in their Assisted Living neighbourhood, and in a recent Quality Assurance Framework Audit they scored 99.5%.

Ground breaking film to be shown at the Barber InstituteThe revolutionary, documentary style film, Cathy Come Home, directed by one of Britain’s most critically acclaimed film-makers, Ken Loach, is showing at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts on Saturday 10 November.

The event is being run in partnership with the National Trust and includes a talk from the film producer, Tony Garnett and Dr Chris Upton from Newman University College.

Cathy Come Home was first broadcast on 16 November 1966 on BBC1 as part of The Wednesday Play and was watched by 12 million people; a quarter of the British population at the time. The film candidly addressed issues

of homelessness, unemployment and poverty in post-war, inner-city Britain with some scenes filmed in Birmingham.

The impact of this film at the time alerted the public, media and the government to the scale of the housing crisis and issues around homelessness. The charities Crisis and Shelter were set up soon after the first broadcast and the film went on to be rated as the best British television drama ever made.

After the film screening, there is a unique opportunity to listen to a talk from Tony Garnett with Dr Chris Upton. The talk will be introduced by Professor Ian Grosvenor (Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Cultural Engagement and Professor of Urban Educational History, University of Birmingham).

Lizzie Hatchman, Birmingham and Black Country Properties Manager, National Trust, said: “This year the National Trust is marking the anniversary of the death of Octavia Hill, whose work in helping to found the National Trust was informed by her long career in housing reform. As in the film ‘Cathy Come Home’, where Cathy and her children experience homelessness, Octavia knew first hand from her work in the Victorian slums that access to adequate and decent housing, especially for the most vulnerable in our communities, was a basic human right.”

Robert Wenley, Acting Director, The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, said: “When Ken Loach’s Cathy Come Home was first televised on the BBC in 1966 it prompted enormous debate and arguably a new movement in social housing reform. Parts of the film were shot in the city of Birmingham and is inextricably linked to it.

“We chose to screen this iconic film, one of the finest TV dramas ever made, and to ask the producer Tony Garnett, who was also born in Birmingham, to talk about the film’s context, in order to highlight Birmingham’s involvement with this landmark moment in British history and also to provide a further response to life in our city.”
