Turandot and 'Nessun Dorma'; the jewels in Puccini's crownThis October, Edgbaston-Based Midland Opera presents their setting of Turandot, Pucinni’s last, and most sublime, opera.

A chorus of local volunteer singers will be joined by an international cast and supported by the Queens Park Sinfonia in Birmingham’s newly renovated Crescent Theatre from October 9 – 13.

And thanks to the generosity of Edgbaston’s David Johnson, of jewellers Rex Johnson & Sons, Midland Opera has commissioned a reduced score to suit the forces of a smaller orchestra and auditorium. This has recently been completed by Bearwood Composer, Phil Ypres-Smith.

Director, Sarah Helsby-Hughes, is excited about the production, saying; ‘Midland Opera is one of the City’s brightest gems, they continue amazing work without Arts funding, relying

on ticket sales for survival. Whilst the standard of singing is testament to the pulling power of this remarkable non-professional opera company.’

The popular Ancient-Chinese-themed Turandot, is based on an edict that any prince seeking to marry Princess Turandot must answer three riddles – and if he fails, he will die. A truly dark fairy tale, wrapped in sublime music.

Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthCarrots and Feta (serves 4)

Ingredients:

• About 750g of carrots• Olive oil • 1 tablespoon of toasted cumin seeds • 100g feta • 2 tablespoons of chopped mint • Good olive oil to drizzle

Method

Scrub carrots and cut into halves or quarters depending on the size of the carrots. Toss in some olive oil and toast in the oven at 180oc for about 45mins (they need to be slightly browned).

When cool enough to handle, squash them in to small pieces with your hands (pick them up and squeeze!)

Now mix in the cumin seeds which you have toasted in a dry pan until they are just starting to colour. Then ground the seeds in a mortar and pestle.

Now spread them loosely on a plate/serving dish and scatter over the feta and mint, drizzle over the olive oil and you’re done!

How do you talk to your children about sex?This is a topic that many parents find embarrassing and difficult to talk to their kids about, but we all know that it needs to be done. Luckily there is a local theatre company that goes into schools to do just that.

Loudmouth Education and Training spent their early years in Moseley and were finalists in this year’s UK Sexual Health Awards. They are now just down the road in Balsall Heath and go into many of our local schools to help our children have a healthy well informed attitude towards sex.

Loudmouth is the first theatre company to be nominated for the Pamela Sheridan Award for innovation in sex and relationships education. The company uses theatre to make the teaching of sensitive issues safe, appropriate and memorable.

The company was founded by Eleanor Vale (still a proud Moseley resident!) and Chris Cowan in 1994 and has reached over 250,000 young people with their innovative work on issues including puberty and bullying in

primary schools and alcohol and teenage pregnancy in secondary schools and colleges.

Eleanor Vale says ‘learning about these real life issues is so important for young people and so we work hard to keep the price realistic so schools can continue to afford this work in tough times. We recently worked in Moseley School on growing up and puberty which was a great success. Schools can book Loudmouth from as little as £6 per student which includes up to a term’s worth of lessons to support the work.’

Symphony Hall celebrates 21st AnniversaryAnd to mark the occasion it held a concert with performances by CBSO, CBSO Chorus and the “operatic powerhouse” Bryn Terfel.

The audience included Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston who is helping to support their 21st Anniversary Appeal seeking to forge new long-term relationships with primary schools in Ladywood.

Symphony Hall is seeking to shape our city’s future and connect children to musical experiences - the cost is £35 per child. With our help these children have the chance to learn to sing, learn to play a musical instrument and attend at least two gigs a year.

We are asked to give the best birthday present that money can buy and sponsor a child. Just £35 could change their life.

Local lottery supports local charitiesLast year TLC Lottery donated £126,000 to Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice - enough to fund around 4,500 hours of care.

That covers nursing care, physiotherapy, meals, dressings and medication which are delivered round-the-clock, 365 days a year, to people from across Birmingham and Sandwell.

Each year the charity supports around 1,000 patients and at any one time is providing care to 300 people. The Hospice delivers its services through a network of palliative care doctors, clinical nurse specialists and physiotherapists, who support patients at home, at the charity’s inpatient unit and the Day Hospice in Selly Park.

TLC Lottery’s funding helps the Hospice to support relatives during

bereavement through the work of its Family and Carer Support Team. These Staff and volunteers offer guidance and advice to those coping with loss.

Apple Day at Martineau Gardens Celebrate this season’s harvest of apples, grown in Martineau Gardens’ orchard. This family friendly event on 13 October from 11am – 3pm will provide an afternoon of family fun.

Apples from the Martineau Gardens’ orchard will be pressed during the event with a traditional wooden press, to produce delicious apple juice. You can also take along your own apples and a bottle if you’d like to press them and take the juice home with you.

The Garden’s seasonal harvest will be for sale including apples, home-made jams, honey (from the Martineau Gardens’

bees), freshly-cut vegetables and salads. There will be delicious home-made cakes, salads and sandwiches and other refreshments on sale. Also, make the most of all that rain that’s fallen this summer… stock up on mulch for fruit trees and vegetable and flower beds. This is the perfect time to spread mulch around trees and plants to help retain moisture and enrich the soil.

Gardeners will enjoy the opportunity to stock up on Martineau Gardens’ autumn plants and compost, and there will be expert gardeners on hand to deal with any gardening queries.

Admission:

Martineau Gardens are open Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm and are free entry except on some event days. Apple Day is free entry. To find out about becoming a member, go to www.martineaugardens.org.uk
