Northern California PGA - 2017 Annual Review 5

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the nearly 1,200 members of the

NCPGA. I am thankful to our officers, the board of directors, executive team and all serving on our committees for their ongoing commitment and tireless efforts to serve the members of our association and grow the game of golf.

Our hearts are heavy from the loss of our friend, brother, PGA Member and the Executive Director of the Section, Chris Thomas, who led our NCPGA family for over 12 years. Chris inspired us all to be engaged in the PGA and take interest in governance. He served our Association in so many ways and was a mentor to countless members. The amazing outreach from throughout all 41 Sections is a tribute to how loved he was within The PGA. Chris made a difference and we will miss his charming smile, charismatic laugh, leadership, and perhaps most of all, his friendship.

We were fortunate to have the Honorary President of The PGA of America, Derek Sprague, attend our 2016 Annual Meeting at Lake Merced Golf Club. Honorary President Sprague called us all to “get in the movie,” get involved in the many programs offered to assist members of The PGA, and engage in the greatest sporting association of the world. His words were heard by the NCPGA Board of Directors, and in 2018 our committee structure will evolve into six “core” committees who will meet collectively two times a year to drive the NCPGA Strategic Plan. Each committee will be led or “chaired” by a member of the NCPGA who is not serving on the board of directors, allowing additional opportunity for members in our Section to

get involved and engaged in your PGA. Any member interested in serving on a committee should contact Nancy Maul at the Section office or me.

Several of our members and clubs have been impacted by the devastating fires in Napa County. The PGA of America, under the leadership of President Levy, established a relief fund managed by a local Silicon Valley company to assist all members in the golf community who were impacted by this tragedy. PGA members and members of the golf community who qualify should visit www.golfrelieffund.org to apply for assistance. PGA members also qualify for assistance through the PGA Disaster Relief program facilitated by The PGA of America. PGA members may apply for assistance or may make contributions to the disaster relief fund by visiting www.pga.org.

We are all especially proud of the NCPGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program established by the NCPGA and the NCPGA Foundation. PGA HOPE truly serves our veterans everywhere and has now impacted the lives of over 500 veterans in the NCPGA Section. Currently there are four sites in operation with additional sites on the horizon. The many stories we have heard from our PGA HOPE participants have been heartwarming. Thank you to all who have made PGA HOPE so successful; you are growing the game and making a difference for our veterans.

I would like to extend my warmest wishes to the entire NCPGA family for a very happy and successful new year. Let’s all play more golf in 2018!

IN MEMORIAMChristopher S. Thomas, PGAExecutive Director & Chief Operating Officer, NCPGAMay 16, 1963 – October 24, 2017

The golf world was stunned to hear of the unexpected October 24, 2017 passing of NCPGA’s Executive Director/COO Chris Thomas. Hired to the Section in 2004, Thomas was the first executive director of a Section to earn his PGA Membership while in office. For 14 years he oversaw all PGA programming offered through the Section and Foundation to the 1,100-plus PGA members and apprentices working at over 400 public, private and resort facilities in Northern California and Northwestern Nevada. Thomas was the chief architect in building strategic plans for both the Section and Foundation, and was responsible for all finances including two budgets exceeding $2 million annually. He formed a Player Development department focusing on growth-of-the-game programming and PGA of America initiatives. In working with the NCGA, Thomas helped create the Junior Tour of Northern California, which today hosts over 40 tournaments annually for boys and girls ages 10 to 18. Thomas was posthumously honored with the NCPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award in December 2017. This award bestows special recognition on a PGA Professional who displays outstanding integrity, character, and leadership through a commitment to mentoring and making significant impacts on the careers of PGA Professionals. No one could be more deserving of the 2017 award than Chris Thomas, PGA.Beyond his many accomplishments and true love of the game, he was an inspirational mentor to so many members, in and out of the Section. Per Martis Camp Club’s Gus Jones, “Through the years I witnessed [Chris] lifting others up at every interaction … [with him,] I felt like I was ‘one of one’ … it turns out everyone I know who knew Chris felt exactly the same! Few people I’ve ever met have [had] a larger impact on their fellow PGA members, making Chris the ultimate NCPGA Bill Strausbaugh award recipient.”Per Jim Kepler, Eagle Valley Golf Course and member of the 2017 NCPGA Board of Directors, “[Chris] came on board with enthusiasm and energy and never looked back. The transformation [of the NCPGA} to one of the top Sections in the country is an everlasting tribute to [Chris], his staff and the NCPGA Professionals who provided him support. The journey will continue and he will be missed.”Thomas is survived by his wife Selena and daughters Tara and Taylor. He will be greatly missed by his family, his colleagues, his friends and the NCPGA staff.

L to R Tara, Selena, and Taylor Thomas accepted the Bill Strausbaugh Award on Chris’ behalf.

Executive Director & COO ReportNancy MaulInterim Executive Director, NCPGA

Twenty-seventeen has been a year of change. It has brought many good changes to the world of golf in Northern California highlighted below, along with some devastating ones. The loss

of our friend, mentor and leader, Executive Director Chris Thomas, has left us all stunned. As well, the many, including some in our NCPGA family, who were put out of their homes—either temporarily or permanently—because of the wildfires. And so, we pull together—the PGA family—to draw strength from each other as we rebuild and focus on the future: supporting our NCPGA members and growing the game of golf.

Highlights of 2017 include:

• Player Development: Activities held to support player development programming included 86 PGA Junior League teams with our very own Terry Sullivan, PGA Assistant Golf Professional from Santa Teresa G.C. leading his team to Western Regional Championships, and 5th Place nationally! Drive, Chip & Putt competitions were held at 13 locations including a Regional Championship at The Olympic Club where qualifiers advance to the Finals at Augusta National G.C. on the Sunday before the 2018 Masters. In conjunction with the NCGA, we had another successful Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) season that included over 800 student athletes competing in 30 events over the spring, summer and fall months.

• Tournaments: Our tournament program, developed by the tournament committee and staff, continues to offer our members and apprentices a variety of playing opportunities; both in the competitive point series and championships, as well as tournaments that are more focused on networking such as the 4-Pro Scramble and Movers, Shakers & Money Makers. In 2018, we want to further engage you, our members, with opportunities to combine education and golf together, making your day away from work and family both productive and enjoyable. Stay tuned for some new opportunities at Section, Chapter & Division events.

• Communications: In Fall 2017, we relaunched ncpgalinks.com with a new, simplified technology designed to make it easier to find the information you want and need. Under the leadership of the communications committee, and by evaluating click-through activity, we continue to provide compelling industry information, along with news you need to know through the Section’s eNews and social media platforms.

• Sponsorship: We continue to work in evolving our business development efforts to build non-industry partnerships in addition to growing our industry partners. In 2017 we successfully secured just over $325,000 in Section sponsorship funding. It is our goal to continue securing revenue to support tournaments, education, meetings, junior golf and Foundation activities.

• NCPGA Foundation: Your NCPGA Foundation focused 2017 on growing funding and programming for PGA HOPE Northern California “Helping Our Patriots Everywhere.” Free clinics that introduce golf to all veterans in order to enhance their mental, social, physical and emotional well-being are conducted throughout the region. We have served more than 500 veterans in Northern California at Presidio G.C., Metropolitan G.C., Cypress Lakes G.C., Cherry Island G.C., and Haggin Oaks G.C. The Veterans Administration, in recognition of our efforts to serve veterans in our community through PGA HOPE, has awarded an $80,000 grant to the NCPGA Foundation to continue expanding our service to veterans through PGA HOPE Northern California. This is an exciting time for your Foundation as we impact lives in our community while growing the game of golf.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2018 as we have secured a full slate of Section, Chapter & Division activities including tournaments, education and meetings. As we close out 2017, I would like to thank the NCPGA Members and apprentices, board of directors, committees, task forces, volunteers and your hard-working staff on a job well done! It’s an honor to serve as your Interim Executive Director.

September 30, 2017 Balance Sheet

The comparative statement of financial position indicates a healthy $462,572

in total liability and net assets; however is $58,291 lower than the same period ending last year. The difference is found in two areas:

(1) Section loan program (reserves) is $31,296 less than year prior and is the outcome of the loss the Section incurred at the end of 2016; (2) The remaining balance is the result of the current shortfall found in the Section operations against budget.

2017 Financial Forecast

Section business activities for fiscal period ending December 31, 2017 are forecasted to produce a 4% negative variance to budget of $58,180, excluding depreciation. The tournament line of business fell short of net zero to budget as a result of shortfalls in PGA TOUR qualifier profits totaling $16,500; there was $25,000 in unbudgeted costs invested in business development and $19,000 in revenue shortfall for NCGA Member Drive, Safeway Open ticket sales and general sponsorship. In 2018, the proposed Section operating budget reflects a net surplus of $23,850, excluding depreciation, as a part of a three-year objective to replenish Section reserves affected by the 2017 negative variance.

Key variances in the 2017 financial statements are noted below.

• General & Administration: Negative variances included overtime required due to new employee training and DCP’s, unexpected auto repairs, and revenue shortfalls in NCGA Member Drive, Safeway Open ticket sales, and general sponsorship.

• Marketing: Negative variance as a result of a $25,000 unbudgeted investment in a business development consultant. The investment was initiated in order to develop non-industry partnerships, with the goal of producing twice as much or more, in sponsorship revenue as was being invested in consulting fees. The efforts produced $18,000 in additional sponsorship revenue; however, most of those funds were allocated to Section meetings & tournaments, resulting in the net deficit in the Marketing line of business.

• Tournaments: Variance in Q4 PGA TOUR qualifiers totaling $16,500. Factors resulting in the negative variance included reduced field size, competing PGA TOUR qualifiers on same weeks, and increased golf course fees. In 2018, the Ellie Mae Classic has moved to the first week in August, and hence will complement rather than compete against the Barracuda Championship.

Division and Chapter results were not forecasted; however, are anticipated to result in an overall surplus for 2017.

It’s an honor to serve our Section as Secretary. My report would not be complete without

paying my respect to Chris Thomas: leader, mentor, and friend; he will be missed and remembered always. This has been a busy year for our Section and officers. NCPGA Officers and Executive Director traveled to San Diego in July for the District 11 meeting, joining the Southern California and Aloha Sections. PGA President Paul Levy was in attendance and we were able to discuss issues relevant to our Sections, District and Association.Interim Executive Director Nancy Maul, President Bill Troyanoski, Honorary President Len Dumas, and I attended the PGA Annual Meeting in Austin which took place November 1 – 4. The meeting opened with a moment of silence for Chris. We were all grateful for the support we received from The PGA and delegates. A few of the highlights included a two-hour session on Leadership (Day 1), followed by the National Awards Dinner with NCPGA Member Tom Morton receiving the honorable Player Development Award. Day 2 followed with a robust 90-minute session with past Ryder Cup Captains Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Hal Sutton, and 2018 Captain Jim Furyk.

The NCPGA had no major membership issues that arose in 2017. As in years past, there has been discussion around the number of suspended apprentices. The apprentice mentoring committee is always available to communicate with apprentices who have fallen behind or have slipped into suspended status. Membership reports were given to the general membership at the NCPGA Semi-Annual Meeting at the Eldorado Resort Casino in Reno, Nev. this past July.NCPGA Membership as of November 2017 is shown below:

• Total Membership: 1,104• Total Members: 904

(Inactive: 34; Class F: 7)• Total Apprentices: 220

(Suspended Apprentices: 53)• New Facilities*: 7• New Apprentices*: 47• New Members*: 27• Transfers into our Section*: 34

*Since 01/01/2017 It is a privilege to serve our members and grow the game. I truly appreciate this opportunity. A special thank you to our staff: Nancy Maul, Suzy Schneider, Ellen Lalande, Jade Reed, Cameron MacGregor, PGA and Brian Rich.

Northern California PGA - 2017 Annual Review 10

It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as NCPGA Foundation President the

last two years. In the last year we have experienced the results of our Foundation pivot and I’m pleased to share several exciting updates with you.

Since the shift in our Foundation bylaws, allowing for 75% of our board to represent the diverse constituency of the NCPGA region, we have added several new key board members who have participated in fundraising, provided direction, and have accessed their personal and professional networks. Thanks to the hard work of Managing Director Nancy Maul, we were awarded an $80,750 Adaptive Sports Grant from the U.S. Veterans Administration to directly support PGA HOPE programs in our Section. We also received grants from the Disabled Veterans Administration/California, Inclusive Community Resources, VFW/California, and the Hugh Stuart Center Trust. This will go a long way to growing and expanding the program to other courses and regions. Our membership has seen the first of a monthly Foundation newsletter aimed at raising the level of member engagement, helping our members understand the work the Foundation is doing, and how the Foundation is growing the game.Since PGA HOPE Northern California started in Fall 2015, over 350 veterans have graduated the program, and well over 500 have attended at least one clinic. We are looking forward to continuing and growing this wonderful program, and impacting the lives of veterans in our community.Once again, this year we were able to award four PGA Apprentice Scholarships. A large part of the funds for the Apprentice Scholarship came through the generosity of our members attending the NCPGA Semi-Annual Meeting. Scholarship winners were Kevin Chen of Castlewood C.C., Scott Peterson of Coyote Creek G.C., Nick Price of Butte Creek C.C., and Jonathan Weurtz of Castlewood C.C., each receiving a check for $800.

Our premier fundraising event of the year, The Langley, took place at Pebble Beach on August 13 – 14. Our honorees were Hall of Famer Hale Irwin and local golf legend John Fry, PGA Life Member. The event was a big success and raised almost $100,000 for PGA HOPE Northern California. The Langley is a true celebration of “Golf and Life.” If you can, please consider bringing a team for 2018.New this year, Merrill Lynch & Bank of America sponsored Invest in HOPE, a fundraiser for PGA HOPE Northern California, held at Blackhawk C.C. in September. Founding Chairs Mark Morasky and Jay O’Neill, both West Point graduates from Merrill Lynch, launched this fundraising effort to support veterans and chose PGA HOPE as the beneficiary program. This inaugural event was a great success with nearly $35,000 raised to directly benefit PGA HOPE Northern California. Next year’s event is in the books, scheduled for Tuesday, September 11, 2018 with plans of filling both courses at Blackhawk C.C. The 100 Hole Charity Golf Challenge continued in 2017, with over $30,000 raised. Of these funds, 50% will go to player-selected charities. Tim Burr, PGA and Nancy Maul both played to benefit charities supporting victims from the fires, in addition to the 50% that remains to support PGA HOPE Northern California. Congratulations to Tim Burr, top fundraiser this year with a total of $14,450. Please consider being part of the fundraising process for your NCPGA Foundation. Playing the Charity Golf Challenge or donating a high-end golf package for auction would go a long way to growing those we serve through our Foundation programming. I’d like to thank Nancy Maul, Suzy Schneider, and Bob Epperly, PGA for all their passion and work to make our NCPGA Foundation a success. And a special thanks to Chris Thomas, PGA for all his hard work, passion, and belief in our Foundation. Chris, you will be missed.

Northern California PGA - 2017 Annual Review 12

Greetings Northern California PGA members and apprentices—I hope

this note finds you all well. We just recently returned from our PGA Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. It was a great meeting highlighted by an entertaining fireside chat with Texas-based US Ryder Cup Captains

Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, and Hal Sutton, as they were joined on stage by the 2018 US Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk. Three resolutions were passed while two resolutions failed. Information on these resolutions can be found on www.pga.org.

We also celebrated our seven Hall of Fame Inductees led by Gary Player and Renee Powell, and 12 awards recipients led by PGA Golf Professional of the Year Darrell Kestner and PGA Teacher of the Year David Leadbetter. It was also a special night to celebrate Aloha Section PGA Professional Mark Rolfing and his wife Debi, who received the PGA Distinguished Service Award.

The PGA Board of Directors proudly announced that CEO Pete Bevacqua’s contract was extended three years through the end of 2024. Pete has served as CEO since November of 2012, providing tremendous leadership and vision.

The PGA of America Ohana has been hit hard recently by the devastating hurricanes affecting the Southern Texas, South Florida, North Florida, Georgia, and Carolinas Sections, and by the wildfires ravaging areas in the Northern and Southern California Sections. The newly implemented Golf Relief and Assistance Fund was created to assist PGA members and others in the golf industry who find themselves faced with temporary financial problems due to medical emergencies or natural disasters. This fund is supported exclusively by contributions from PGA members, with an initial donation of $250,000 from The PGA of America. To learn more about the program and find out how you can donate, please visit www.pga.org.

PGA Reach continues to be a major focus of The PGA of America with its three areas of focus: Youth, Military, and Diversity & Inclusion. It was announced recently that Jack Nicklaus has become a partner of PGA Reach and will serve as a spokesperson along with providing financial support through the Nicklaus Companies. The Military Pillar is highlighted by PGA HOPE and included the Inaugural PGA National Day of HOPE on Veterans Day. Diversity & Inclusion is highlighted by the PGA WORKS Assistant Program and PGA LEAD, which seeks to offset the disproportionately low representation of diversity in volunteer leadership positions. The Youth Pillar continues to highlighted by PGA Jr. League which had a record 42,000 participants in 2017 (up from 9,000 in 2013)! The PGA Jr. League Championship presented by National Car Rental took place at Grayhawk G.C. (Nov. 16 – 19) with team Georgia emerging victorious. We’ve also hired two National League Managers and 12 Regional League Managers to build upon the explosive growth of PGA Jr. League.

There is great excitement in championship golf with the recent announcements of future championship sites, along with the news of the PGA Championship moving to May starting in 2019 at Bethpage Black.

On a personal note, I was proud to run in and complete the NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 5, running on behalf of PGA Reach. Thank you for all the support—it was the experience of a lifetime!

Much is happening in The PGA of America and I’m always here to answer any questions that you may have or assist you in any way I can. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime at [email protected] or on my cell at (808) 639-6394.

Northern California PGA - 2017 Annual Review 14

Ed Winiecki, PGA general manager at the San Jose C.C., has been honored with the Golf Professional of the Year Award. Winiecki has been in the golf business for 30 years and worked every job from range picker to general manager.

Throughout his career, he has approached each day as a unique opportunity to teach, enhance, grow, educate, promote, and inspire others to play and enjoy the game of golf.

In 2007, Winiecki set a goal to be certified in all six areas of expertise. Having achieved that goal, he is now on a course to become a Master Professional. His grandfather’s words guide him daily: “Whatever career path you choose, make sure it is what you love to do because your happiness and health are more important than money.”

As a manager he enjoys giving people the freedom to make choices and feels that to be a great leader, one must be a great listener. Additionally, he tries to make people laugh throughout the day in an effort to appreciate life. He works hard to inspire his staff to be the best they can be, while also balancing their personal lives with their careers. He believes in two principles: “Always lead by example” and “If you have the time to lean, you have time to clean!” which is why you sometimes will find him driving the range picker!

San Jose C.C. has a rich tradition and is one of the founding clubs of the Northern California Golf Association, dating back to 1899. Winiecki continues to work closely with the NCGA in a number of meaningful ways including growth of the game and player development concepts. The club supports local high school and college golf programs and Winiecki has led by example as coach of middle and high school golf teams.

His dedication and devotion to serving The PGA of America include serving on Chapter and Section boards of directors dating back to 2003. John Crater from Corral de Tierra C.C. has garnered 2017’s Assistant Apprentice of the Year Award. Crater participates in numerous activities throughout the year including serving on the Assistant Apprentice Division board for the

past two years, recently as co-chair. He has also represented the AA Division on the North/South Cup Matches. The NCPGA Golf Professional of the Year displays the finest exhibition of leadership, determination, business acumen, professionalism and service to the Section, the Association, the local community, and to golf in general.

Gary Bashford from Round Hill C.C. has been honored as the 2017 Teacher of the Year. With more than 11,000 golf lessons taught and hundreds of golf schools and demonstration clinics under his belt, Bashford has helped Round

Hill C.C. earn the reputation as the most successful teaching program in San Francisco’s East Bay, teaching beginners, aspiring juniors, collegiate athletes, and tournament players among others. Bashford has represented the NCPGA through publications, video instruction, new business development, a television pilot, and radio broadcasts. He believes that playing competitively is a key component to being a good instructor. He produces an email tip of the week and available instruction times to 1,300 students; has implemented several successful programs including Bogey Girl Golf and the GB Junior Academy; and was recently invited to be a select teacher in the PGA Olympic Program, which encourages Olympic athletes to learn the game of golf.

Zach Jonas of Montreux G. & C.C. has received the 2017 Horton Smith Award. In his career, Jonas has made a point to be the best PGA Professional possible for his club, his team, his chapter, and the NCPGA Section. He is a strong believer in

the importance of education for PGA members and has taken a larger role as education chairman of the Sierra Nevada Chapter, as well as being a member of both the NCPGA Education and Communications Committees. He has brought in guest speakers on topics such as player development, junior golf, USGA rules, and sports psychology. He has contributed in mentoring more than 21 PGA program interns while at Montreux and has developed strategies to assist with financial needs of apprentice education requirements.

Meredith Loosse of Woodcreek G.C. has been honored as 2017’s Youth Player Development Award winner. Loosse’s positive image in youth golf leadership is illustrated by teaching juniors the importance

of respect, sportsmanship, and honesty in golf which in turn creates a positive experience they can take with them in other parts of their lives. She reaches out to fellow board members and PGA Professionals in her area about the importance of having youth golf at their local facilities as a way to build a stronger community. She also works with neighborhoods and schools to make golf their preferred after-school activity. Her Facebook Live posts and photos inspire her fellow PGA Professionals to think outside the box to create a fun atmosphere in youth clinics through the use of games and drills.

Justin Russo of Monterey’s Bayonet and Black Horse G.C. has earned the 2017 NCPGA Player Development Award. Russo has a passion for growing the game of golf. He has developed a style of teaching

that breaks away from the “fix-the-fault” methodology, saying instead that being a successful communicator and coach are the cornerstone for developing a successful teaching business and growing the game. He has taught juniors and mini-tour players and everyone in between. As owner of the Justin Russo Golf Academy (JRGA), he has given more than 30,000 private lessons in the last 17 years on the Monterey Peninsula. He has partnered with the Carmel Valley Community Youth Center and Carmel Valley Regional Park District to provide the JRGA at school. This after-school enrichment program focuses on the junior golfers having fun while they learn the game in a safe environment. He believes many of our life skills can be mirrored and learned through experiences in golf.

The NCPGA is proud to honor Ron Kuwata from The Links at Rolling Hills with the 2017 Patriot Award. Giving back and assisting veterans is nothing new for Kuwata. He was instrumental in the creation of a Vets Play Free Program in 2003. He has

been a consummate role model for others through his involvement with Saving Strokes and most recently with the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Program. Kuwata served his country as a sergeant with the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam and knows firsthand the challenges faced by many of our veterans. He has provided lessons to veterans and first responders and has been an advocate for the game of golf. As a founding member of Doctors Orders: Play Golf! he has encouraged other veterans and non-veterans to take up the game. This veteran and loyal PGA member gives back to his community as the Red Bluff High School golf coach and has helped raise funds to offset costs.

Brian Eilders from Old Brockway G.C. has taken the honors as the 2017 Club Fitter of the Year. A certified fitting specialist for both Titleist and Cobra, his territory covers much of Northern California. As director of instruction at

Old Brockway, he says today’s consumer is well educated and recognizes the importance of being properly fitted. His goal is to provide his customers with their best-ever fitting experience—he makes them comfortable and ensures they enjoy their session while also learning. It works; in thousands of fittings, no customer has ever been refitted due to an oversight from Eilders. Each fall with the arrival of new product, he conducts up to 50 fittings of Northern California PGA members on Titleist’s staff. By familiarizing the staffers with the new product, he is also mentoring them on how to fit their members. Similar to training the trainers, Eilders is fitting the fitters!

Jeff King has garnered the Sales Representative of the Year Award. With more than 25 years of experience, King is driven to support NCPGA Professionals through education, product seminars, and trunk shows. He has supported many events with product donations including The Langley, Patriot Day, Folds of Honor, and NCPGA golf tournaments. With 200 accounts in Northern California and Nevada, King still finds time to discuss point-of-purchase signage, fixture options, product placement, and pricing strategy to find the sweet spot of NCPGA golf shop customers. King offers great product knowledge, customer follow-up, and knowledge of the shop’s expectations. He feels it’s very important to build trust with the NCPGA Professionals. King represents 10 companies including Carnoustie Sportswear, PRG Americas, and Legendary Headwear, where he has been top salesman for 25 years.

The NCPGA is pleased to honor Ron Agostini as 2017’s Sports Media Person of the Year for his exceptional job in promoting and reporting the story of PGA Professionals in the Northern California Section.

Agostini has written about golf for the Modesto Bee since 1977, and retired in 2017. He covered 8 U.S. Opens, 3 Masters, 1 PGA of America, and more than 75 PGA TOUR events. His golf column ran for 35 years and covered all local and junior golf tournaments as well as the accomplishments of many local PGA Professionals. He also wrote about new PGA Professionals in the area and occasionally about instruction clinics. A previous winner of the NCPGA Sports Media Person of the Year, Agostini was also named the 2000 California Golf Writers & Broadcasters Association (CGWBA) Golf Writer of the Year and was inducted into the Outstanding Athlete Award’s Hall of Fame at the Sportsmen of Stanislaus Club in 2017.

Keith Hill from Hidden Valley C.C. has earned 2017’s Golf Course Superintendent of the Year Award. Last year, Hill attained certified golf course superintendent status, which includes continuing education,

course assessment portfolio, and written exams. Only one in five superintendents achieves this status. He has worked with The First Tee in Northern Nevada teaching children the correct way to fill a divot and fix a ball mark. He also mentors children about golf course management careers while letting them see the ins and outs of golf course maintenance. Hill is in his tenth season at Hidden Valley C.C. and believes there are three ingredients to success: knowledge of turf science, communication since understanding leads to productive employees, and leadership to inspire and help others understand the goal.

Evan Ives from CordeValle G.C. has earned the Resort Merchandiser of the Year Award. Ives spends about half his time merchandising by tending to displays, receiving products, and assisting members and guests. Displays are changed and

fixtures moved every two weeks to keep the golf shop looking fresh. With about 30 manufacturers represented, CordeValle G.C. has been able to significantly grow through stronger hard-good sales, aggressive targeting of corporate groups, more fully stocked selections, and preference surveys of members and guests. Ives’ merchandising philosophy is based on four pillars: planning quantities and timing of goods coming into the shop; marketing to customers through newsletters, golf cart GPS screens, emails, and personal engagement; merchandising with appealing displays to entice purchasing; and customer service to earn trust.

Tony Neadeau from Martis Camp Club is honored as the Private Merchandiser of the Year. Neadeau says Martis Camp Club is more than just a golf shop. They try to add a “wow!” to the club experience and make their members feel

comfortable. He and his team carefully select the finest quality merchandise and keep members in mind by buying product variety that crosses all age groups and styles of dress while maintaining traditional Martis Camp values. The inviting environment includes fresh flowers, music, and an open container of brightly wrapped chocolates. Displays are appealing and casual to make them “touchable” at all times. He feels that with the right products and knowledgeable, warm, sincere service, the sales will happen. Neadeau provides members with a bi-weekly video message to keep them engaged even when they’re not in the shop.

David Johnson from Monterey’s Laguna Seca Golf Ranch has garnered the Public Merchandiser of the Year Award. With 21 manufacturers represented, Johnson says the goal is to provide merchandise for members and guests that is less likely to be

found at online or large chain retailers. He feels it’s important to listen carefully to members to ensure he offers a correct mix, price, and quality of merchandise. He works closely with manufacturers’ representatives to learn what is selling best at comparable facilities, and visits neighboring facilities to stay current on industry trends and fashions. Johnson says Laguna Seca Golf Ranch maintains a broad product array, thereby offering varying price points for similar products—knowing that some members are fashion-forward early adopters and some are bargain conscious.

Apprentice Mentoring Committee

Ward Sutton, PGA Master Professional Chairman, NCPGA Apprentice Mentoring Committee, Hidden Valley Country Club

The mission of the NCPGA Apprentice Mentoring Committee is to mentor, coach and support PGA apprentices and supervisors with PGA PGM progress. The 2017 committee consisted of Chairman Ward Sutton of Hidden Valley C.C. (Sierra Nevada Chapter), Andrew Black of Burlingame C.C. (Bay Area Chapter), Luke Syverson of Napa Valley C.C. (Bay Area Chapter), Brad Harmon of Presidio G.C. (Bay Area Chapter), Mark Sivara of Palo Alto Hills G. & C.C. (Bay Area Chapter), Cole Handley of Poppy Hills G.C. (Monterey Bay Area Chapter), Eric Lippert of Pebble Beach Golf Links (Monterey Bay Area Chapter), Ben Alexander of Mount Shasta Resort (North Coast Chapter), Chris Detsch of Genoa Lakes G.C. (Sierra Nevada Chapter), Tyler Ramsey of Somersett G. & C.C. (Sierra Nevada Chapter), Nick Bailey of Butte Creek C.C. (North State Chapter), Meredith Loosse of Woodcreek G.C. (North State Chapter), Doug Hanson of Turlock G. & C.C. (San Joaquin Chapter), and Casey Butler of Porterville G.C. (San Joaquin Chapter).

In 2017, the committee continued to focus on establishing Section and Chapter scholarship fundraising programs, offering Playing Ability Test support, and conducting new PGA Apprentice Orientations. Additionally, the committee communicated via email and mail to both apprentices and supervisors offering support and conducted presentations at Chapter educational opportunities. If the committee or I can be of any assistance to you or your PGA apprentices, please let us know.

Communications Committee

Ed Winiecki, PGAChairman, NCPGA Communications/Public Relations Committee, San Jose Country Club

The most fitting way to start the last annual report from this

committee would be to say THANK YOU and a final goodbye to the late Chris Thomas. Chris worked so hard every day as our Executive Director and I can’t count the hours that I spent communicating with him for advice and assistance with our committee. Chris was an inspiration and always made the time to listen and discuss how we can get better and expand our communications as well as our brand. Chris, your legacy will live on as you have taught us all how to strive to be the best we can be and how to be first class PGA Professionals.

I would like to personally thank the committee members for their work and participation this year: John Creaney, Chris Conway, Katie Robinson, Eric Jones, Eddie Scott, Patrick Shaw, Zach Jones, and Mark Hayden. And thanks to our staff liaisons for their hard work—Nancy Maul and especially Ellen Lalande.

One of the goals our Section board of directors has committed to for 2018 is to condense, restructure and redefine the committees and their purposes. Part of that will be to dissolve the current Communications and Public Relations Committee. Going forward, its duties and functions will be combined and absorbed by another committee not yet determined. The restructuring will give us an opportunity to focus on core goals and objectives that will better serve our members and apprentices. Streamlining will also make better use of our time, energy and resources going forward.

The Section will continue to inform and communicate through the weekly e.Quip.u News e-mail, our website, text push alerts, tournaments, events, meetings, and our Annual Review. Please always feel free to reach out to our Section staff or Chapter or Section board of directors to give us feedback on how we can help you or your clubs in any way.

I encourage any professional to get more involved and join a Chapter or Section committee. The only way we can constantly improve is to encourage more great professionals to make an impact by giving back to our association. Having the opportunity to serve on a committee or board of directors is one of the most rewarding things you can do in your career.

Lastly, I would like to take a moment to thank the Section staff for their ongoing commitment and dedication to make our Section the best in the country!

Six conference call meetings were held, every other month plus one sub-committee meeting to establish a “Pro Perspectives” event in 2019. In those meetings we endeavored to balance locations for seminars so as to have them within the boundaries of as many chapters as possible.

Special Awards Committee Mark Naylor, PGAChairman, NCPGA Special Awards Committee, Crow Canyon Country Club

It has been another amazing year for the Special Awards Committee. There is nothing

better than recognizing our many deserving golf professionals, sports personalities, and vendors for all of their hard work and dedication to our Section. The job of the committee is not easy as we have to choose from so many qualified applicants and it’s a job our committee does not take lightly. On behalf of the committee, I would again like to congratulate all of our winners.

The committee is comprised of a representative from each chapter. This past year I was fortunate enough to work with PGA Professionals Cole Handley, David Solomon, Greg Raleigh, Mike Galli, Ted Mattila, and Greg Feddersen. Thank you for all of your hard work.

A special thank you to Suzy Schneider, who keeps us on track and on point. Her tireless effort with the committee directly relates to our success.

As we move into 2018, we continue to explore new ideas on how we can improve as a committee and how we can make sure that more deserving professionals are recognized throughout our great Section.

Player Development Committee

Mike Dowd, PGAChairman, Player Development Committee, Oakdale Golf & Country Club

The Growth of the Game Commit-tee met once this year via conference call before the decision was made by the NCPGA Board of Directors to take National’s lead and undergo committee restructuring. Under the new plan, Growth of the Game will become a secondary focus of every committee moving forward, rather than a stand-alone commit-tee. In light of having a dedicated staff member like Brian Rich focused on Growth of the Game in our Section, I believe we are still set up to succeed in this important area under the new arrangement. As the former chairman of this committee, how-ever, I want to go on record as stating that I believe this issue to be paramount to the health of the game and our ongoing strength and survival as an association, so I sincerely hope that in making it a secondary focus of all committees that it will re-ceive the attention and focus it deserves, rather than being lost in the shuffle of committees who have other primary agendas first and foremost.

Junior Golf Committee

Meredith Loosse, PGA/LPGA Chairwoman, NCPGA Junior Golf Committee,Woodcreek Golf Club

Committee Members: PGA Profes-sionals Meredith Loosse, Bill Troyanoski, Gus Jones, Matt Plumlee, Shelly O’Keefe, Don Leone, Anthony Maestrini, and Jeff DeBenedetti; Staff Liaison Brian RichCommittee Objectives1. Create a comprehensive roadmap for Junior Golfers

throughout the NCPGA that begins with introduction in our schools through college graduation.

2. Initiate a Golf in Schools program that links to after-school programs taught by PGA Professionals.

3. Promote PGA of America Junior Player Development programs.

2017 OverviewThe NCPGA Junior Golf Committee met twice in 2017 to advance the committee’s objectives and promote growth in junior golf. The committee’s primary focus is to provide support for PGA Jr. League expansion and growth and the development of the Golf in Schools program that leads to after-school programs offered by our membership. The committee met in person on April 18 at Las Positas G.C. in Livermore, where it made a final decision on the Golf in Schools curriculum and developed a professional bio form. A new chair, Meredith Loosse, PGA was elected. We had a phone meeting on June 26. In this meeting we decid-ed to postpone presenting the Golf in Schools program until the annual meeting in December. The plan was to put the final branding to the presentation and meet one last time before launching the project to the general membership. In our August 9 phone meeting it was proposed that we would present and complete the Golf in Schools program. Unfortu-nately, we were unable to present at the annual meeting. The action now is to get the roadmap that was developed for Golf in Schools to be put as a link on the NCPGA website for our members and apprentices to use as a guide at their facilities.

Nominations & Elections Committee

Len Dumas, PGAChairman, NCPGA Nominations & Elections Committee, Contra Costa Country Club

We are again encouraged by the number of NCPGA Section members who submitted their names for 2018-2020 term board of director positions. There were nine in total.

This was an interesting election season as five seats were available. There were three seats to fill for the end of regular 3-year terms, one seat to fill for the remaining term due to a director leaving during their term; and the fifth seat to fill due to the election of the secretary position.

Congratulations are extended to the elected Directors-at-Large:

• Director Ward Sutton (188 votes)• Director Ed Winiecki (173 votes)• Director-Elect Eric Lippert (172 votes)• Director-Elect John Abendroth (123 votes)• Director-Elect Dave Lewis (122 votes)

Congratulations as well to Ward Sutton, PGA; our elected secretary for the term 2018-2020.

It has been an extended period since the NCPGA Board of Directors has been in full strength as sometimes happens. The board is 20 in number, consisting of four officers, nine directors-at-large, six chapter presidents and an independent director.

Thanks are again in order for all who raised their hand to volunteer for the board of directors. Unfortunately there is not a chair for all, and we hope all who have previously run will do so again.

Regards and best wishes for a great season.

from Hidden Valley C.C. to help support their PGA/PGM progression. Congratulations to TJ Duncan at Lakeridge G.C., Jason Petrilena at Hidden Valley C.C., and Scott Beville at Lakeridge G.C. for earning their PGA Membership in 2017.

The 2017 tournament schedule consisted of five pro-ams and seven pro-pro events in addition to our annual championships. Congratulations to our Chapter Stroke Play and Match Play Champion Stuart Smith, and the PGA Professional Team for winning the Brooks Park Cup Matches. A special thank you goes out to SNCPGA Tournament Chairman Greg Wenzel for our outstanding tournament schedule.

Our education calendar was filled with a Section award winner cracker-barrel prior to the annual meeting at Lakeridge G.C., a Psychology of Golf Seminar at Montreux G. & C.C. prior to a pro-pro event, and a Golf Genius training class in October at Clear Creek Tahoe. Thank you to SNCPGA Education Chairman Zach Jonas for his hard work and making those events successful.

The SNCPGA remained committed to growing the game through junior golf. Thank you to Zach Jonas and John Hermans for hosting the Drive, Chip and Putt during the Barracuda Championship at Montreux G. & C.C. Thank you to all of the courses that fielded a team at one of our three area PGA Junior Leagues in Reno, Carson, and Truckee. Once again, thank you to Shelly Godeken-Wright for conducting the Fred and Judy Alexander Clinic at the Eagle Valley G.C. serving 600+ juniors. Thank you to all of the PGA members who donate their time to the Boys and Girls High School Golf Programs throughout the area, along with the time they give to The First Tee of Northern Nevada and Truckee Golf in Schools.

Congratulations to our SNCPGA members who won NCPGA Special Awards in 2017:

• Club Fitter of the Year – Brian Eilders• Golf Course Superintendent of the Year – Keith Hill• Horton Smith Award – Zach Jonas

• Merchandiser of the Year/Private – Tony Neadeau• Sales Representative of the Year – Jeff King

Senior Division Shawn McEntee, PGA President, NCPGA Senior DivisionCoyote Creek Golf Club

Our 2017 season got off to a great start with Saddle Creek Golf hosting our first event followed by Contra Costa C.C. hosting our membership meeting and Pro-Pro 2. In all we had eight pro-pro events with one unfortunate rain-out. A special thanks to the dedicated senior board of directors and the Tournament Committee Chairman Mike Cook for an outstanding line-up of facilities—we thank our host clubs, members, and staff who allowed us to play some of the best clubs in Northern California.

All Senior Division members feel a strong sense of loyalty and gratitude for the tremendous support we receive from our sponsors. I urge all members to reach out to them expressing your gratitude and whenever possible support them and their products and services: Omega – El Dorado Casino (Chase Stigal), John Beardon (Golf Pride Grips), CIG Services – Club Car, EPIC Insurance, and UCI Construction.

Our major events were held at Rancho Murieta C.C. (Match Play Championship), San Jose C.C. (Stroke Play Championship) and our final major the Northern California Senior Open (Half Moon Bay G.C.). Congratulations to our champions: Match Play – Dave Carr, Stroke Play – Jeff Brehaut, and Senior Nor Cal Open – Rodney Wilson. I also would like to commend Stuart Smith on his 3rd-place finish at the National Senior Club Professional Championship. Stuart earns an exemption to play in the 2018 Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores, Mich.

Congratulations to Glen Stubblefield for his third straight Super Senior Player of the Year win. We also applaud the Senior Cup team for their fifth consecutive win defeating the NCGA Seniors at Contra Costa C.C. And I was honored to be named Senior Division Player of the Year for the fifth straight year.

I would like to close by thanking NCPGA Tournament Chairman Cameron MacGregor and our dedicated NCPGA Section Staff who perform so many duties behind the scenes. Your professionalism is a great example why we have the best Section in the country. I would also like to personally thank all senior professionals who supported the 2017 events and I encourage you to continue your support of Senior Golf in the Northern California Section.

A special thanks to outgoing board members Mike Cook, Joe Vavra, and Dave DeLong. Your expertise and enthusiasm were greatly appreciated!

Women’s Division

Dede Moriarty, PGAChairwoman, NCPGA Women’s DivisionPresidio Golf Course

The NCPGA Women’s Division includes Women PGA members and apprentices. There are currently 50 members in our Division. This represents a substantial growth in the last few years. NCPGA women continue to grow in leadership positions as directors of golf, head professionals and directors of instruction.

I encourage our female members to participate in joining NCPGA committees, come to Section meetings and education events, and play in Section golf tournaments.

2017 marked the 21st anniversary of the Women’s Cup Matches, which is a competition between the NCPGA Women’s Division and six WGANC players and six PWGA players. The team dedicated this year’s matches to Chris Thomas and thanks to the excellent play by both veteran Cup players and new players to our team, we defeated the amateurs by a score of 13 / 11.

I’m looking forward to next year and the continued growth of our Division.

As 2017 wrapped up the NCPGA Assistant Apprentice Division proudly celebrated another successful season. With the help of our generous sponsors Andy Paisal Golf Sales, Jason Smith with Maui Jim, and 18Birdies, we were able to host eight events this season with an average field size of 30 players per stroke play event.

Carol Pence attended many of our events, meeting before or after golf with any players who had employment questions or desired some help with their career planning.

In a close race for Player of the Year honors, Kyle Hansen came out on top just ahead of Jeff Freund, our Match Play Champion, and Donnie Baucom. Our Stroke Play Champion David Solomon recently accepted the Head Golf Professional position at Napa Valley C.C.

The 2017 North vs. South Cup Matches were held at Saddle Creek Golf Resort and the NCPGA team came out victorious 13.5 to 10.5. Cameron McGregor attended the matches and was a great help throughout the event to the NorCal team.

As we look towards 2018 we hope to build on 2017 by adding a pro/net event, an event or two in cooperation with the Senior Division, and more opportunities for education, networking, and career enhancement for all of our assistants and apprentices.
