This is totally optional so we won’t be sending tickets home for all families. Whooping Cough. Keep coughing kids home and see your GP. Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019. School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. What can you do to prevent whooping cough? 1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members 2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough 3. Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your GP to get them tested for whooping cough For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website (https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx) Naplan Online – Year 3 and Year 5 Over the next 2 weeks, students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in practice online NAPLAN tests, so as to make them familiar with the online structure. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. News form EPS Veggie Patch.

The veggie garden has been a busy place this term. Garden Club students have enjoyed digging, watering, harvesting and eating their favourite produce from the patch. Cucumbers, beans, pumpkins, carrots and cherry tomatoes were all popular. In particular were the tamarillos! We were able to harvest over 10kgs, some of which we have sold at Sprout. We have planted a second tree to meet the demand! Cucumbers and lettuce were also donated to the canteen. The construction of the new compost bins is complete, so we are now able to deal with any green waste from the veggie garden. Garden Club is open to all students every Wednesday during lunchtime. There is always plenty to do!

Thanks to Sprout for supporting our garden efforts.

“I love the garden because I feel I’m part of it!” Kodi, Yr 4.

“I love the garden because I have a garden at home, so I respect it.” Isabella Yr 4

EARLY ACTION FOR SUCCESS Miss Radford KR

KR love hands-on activities when exploring early number concepts.

We have been busily learning how to read, write and represent numbers to 10, as well as exploring concepts such as less than, equal to and more than.

Here you can see us exploring the concepts of less than, equal to and more than using the target number of 10.

The students had to get a handful of counters that they estimated would add up to 10. When they counted their collections they decided which pile they belonged to.

For each handful after that, the students’ handfuls were more calculated based on whether they collected more or less than 10 last time.
