Sustainable Growth
I recently drove to Saskatoon and as I went I had the opportunity to see the farms and townsalong the way. This is a magnificent year for green fields and flowing water. The farms arehuge and getting bigger. They roll out like blankets in brilliant green and electric yellow.Very few small places left. No trend in that direction.
The same is true for the towns. There is an ongoing concentration of population down topractical centers. Hubs, if you like. The rest of the old familiar places are quickly being re-duced to a few names, a diner or gas stop. Why do some survive and others not? Some areclose to major routes and get their traffic from the highway. Some border on the outskirts of
bigger cities and are now almost bedroom communities. Others dont have enough sub-stance left and are simply disappearing; their reason for being over and no way to reinventthemselves. The large-scale corporate farms no longer need them. What makes us different?
One major factor is location. Unique and beautiful surroundings help preserve towns andattract people year after year. However, thats a seasonal quality that can work against us inthe long run. Being a resort community with a 3 month window of opportunity isnt going togive us longevity. We also have a strong arts based interest here thats developing a widerreputation. Thats healthy and we will continue to build on that. The same is true of theT.rex Discovery Centre where efforts to increase the use of this first class facility are justbeginning to bear fruit. We can look to other activities here for which we have a reputation:the Rally in the Valley, bull riding events, Dino Days fireworks and Stegner House attrac-tions. We also have a big assets in the Wolf Willow Health Centre and our school facilities.
The new development on the north hill is evidence of the direction to which we are all nowcommitted. Its a location that has recently seen considerable activity. The flagship newhome is thought to be a harbinger of the future. The current available lots will be accompa-nied by new ones on the north side of the road: 4 along T.Rex Dr. and 3 to 5 adjacent to thenew roadway beyond a lane. None of this will be visible from the T.rex Discovery Centrebut will represent a major addition to the town. The homes will likely be modern, architec-turally strong statements whose investment reflects the serious interest of the new resident-developers. This kind of growth and dollar commitment is what will cement our future. Why? Because activity and development attract more of the same. Ultimately, demand forservices follow.
We need planned, sustainable growth that increases the resident population of the town andcreates demand. We need potential for investment growth. The scent of that potential is inthe air and has brought a tangible sense of renewed confidence to us. Look at the amount of
renovation investment that has taken place in residential real estate over the last few years. Its got everyones attention. And, theres more to come. JK
