For immediate release: October 24, 2017 Presentation and Book Signing: “The Edge: The Pressured Past and Precarious Future of California’s Coast” with Kim Steinhardt and Gary Griggs SANTA CRUZ, CA–– Join Kim Steinhardt and Gary Griggs for an entertaining evening immersed in the magic of the coast as they discuss their new book on Friday, November 3, 2017, from 6:30 – 8 PM at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Doors open at 6:00 PM for this free event. Everything is fair game for these two popular speakers, from personal adventure to science, nature, conservation policy, history, and more. A book signing will immediately following the lecture. “The Edge: The Pressured Past and Precarious Future of California’s Coast” provides a dramatic snapshot of the coast's past, present, and probable future in a time of climate change and expanding human activity. Written by two marine experts who grew up on the coast, “The Edge” is both a celebration of the coast's natural and cultural uniqueness and a warning of the complex changes that threaten that. Kim Steinhardt is a former administrative law judge turned coastal writer and marine wildlife photographer whose upcoming National Geographic book features his unique sea otter photos and storytelling. Gary Griggs, distinguished professor of Earth sciences at UC Santa Cruz, has written or coauthored 10 books about the coast and coastal issues and is a frequent resource for news media on questions of climate change, sealevel rise, coastal erosion, and related issues. ABOUT THE SEYMOUR CENTER: Overlooking the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the Seymour Center is a "living classroom" featuring exhibits, aquariums, touch pools, whale skeletons, fullscale elephant seal models, the Ocean Discovery Shop, and unsurpassed ocean vistas. The aquariums and exhibits feature the everyday tools of ocean exploration and focus on research conducted by scientists locally and around the world. Interactive stations provide handson learning experiences, and docents lead tours and bring marine science to life.
