That’s what the provincial government is telling us. Despite some suspicions and reluctance, we’ll benefit over the next few years from a stronger structure. We’ll be in a better position to attract both new residents and businesses alike. Don’t grumble because you can’t identify them right now. If you have a plan then it’s a key selling platform to the future. We will have the plan and we will have the people with the will to promote it. Many of the elements we need are already there. We have a young mayor and a solid town council. They work hard to keep moving this town ahead. They support it, believe in it and are fighting for it. We elected them and we should give them our input so they can do their best work for us. The OCP gets its first reading to the Town Council in February, 2011, there will be a public meeting to explain it in March and a presentation to the provincial government in April. The greater the feedback by March, the fewer surprises there will be in the end. A copy of the OCP draft will be available by e mail from the planners in Decem- ber. The OCP means YOU

There’s a restlessness among the natives these days; almost a vibration in the ground. Thecall for change and innovation is in the air. No getting around it, this is happening. Slowlybut persistently our town is moving into a new era and pleased, wary or just stubborn,we’re all part of it.

The introduction of the process of the Official Community Plan (OCP) took place lastweek. Despite the weather there was a very good turnout that indicates the serious level of interest and concern we all share for this new format. The province wants to see every

community have a working plan for future development before they continue to dole outmoney to meet our requests. This shouldn’t be a surprise and it acts as a good awakeningmoment for everyone to recognise the need for structure in the growth of a town.

Until now we’ve pretty much gone along on the basis that we have managed the use of ourproperty and the development of the town through mutual consent; mostly through mutualtoleration. a path to solace

There are timeswhen we lose faiththat there could ever be anothertomorrowWorth living!

we are in a dark tunnel, hindered by blinders, weight in our chest and pain in our gut.

it is acute, yet endless, moments move agonizingly slowand we feellike a fly caught in amber, suffocating …

but life goes on outside of ourselvesthe wheel of seasons forever turning,a seasonfor every purpose under heaven,a time to laugh,a time to cry …

so we must hold fastto faith and hope,to grace and courageand the will to climb anothermountain, one step at a time, starting slow and small, forcing our gaze to see the flowers

along the path, until at last, and with surprise,we can enjoy another sunrisewith a smilethat comes from our heart!

« cont’d from pg. 1 The OCP means YOU

While all this is happening at the town plan-ning level there’s also a need and a desire fornew blood and ideas throughout the commit-tees and organizations that provide the func-tioning social structure of Eastend. In a waythey form an unofficial OCP of their own.Over the past decade the concerned few haveparticipated on almost every board and com-mittee there is. They are still there and therest of us are still getting a free ride. It takesmore than a donation at the door to makethings work. We need more people and weneed new commitment. Everyone has some-

thing valuable to offer. YOU are needed.

Choose a group you are interested in. Cometo a meeting once a month or offer to work on some specific project. Many hands willmake accomplishment possible. Long-serving members deserve a rest and need ashow of support to keep energy flowing.Consider making a small contribution of your time in 2011.

There is no doubt, you will get the commu-nity you work for. The OCP is important andso are all the organizations that help shape

the personality of Eastend. Ask, respond andparticipate for our continuing success.JK
