During the month of July we were able to open up the final areas of the Club, the fitness facility, squash courts and our locker rooms at both clubhouses. Thank you again for your patience while we worked to get everything opened up safely for everyone. Now that July is behind us and many of you are returning from vacations, we hope you will consider coming to your Club and enjoy taking advantage of our facilities and services. We have missed seeing many of you over the past few months and look forward to your return! As we move into August we are offering a new feature at our pool facilities on Saturday mornings. Due to the popularity of our normal water aerobics program (offered Monday—Friday from 8:30—9:30), we are adding one more day for members to come in and participate. Starting Saturday, August 8, Pam Slack will be offering a program from 8:00—9:00 a.m. if you are interested in participating, don’t forget to MAKE YOUR ONLINE RESERVATION so you are guaranteed a spot. Although all the details are not yet finalized, on August 22nd Chef Dennis and ECC Member John Brown have collaborated on another wine tasting. This event will be limited in seating so please call and make your reservation as soon as possible so you are guaranteed a seat. During July we also expanded the 19th Hole menu and indoor services. As of today we are working to have the telephone line repaired so that members can call in their order from #8/#9 tee box so your order is ready upon your arrival. We are targeting having this service available within the first week of the month. Upon request from many members, we have also expanded the 19th hole hours as follows: Tuesday—Friday 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. … Saturday, Sunday and Holidays 7:45 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. As we move through August we will be making some much needed improvements to the ladies restroom and locker room facilities at Derrick’s Creek clubhouse. Please be patient while we work through the renovation process. In closing this month I would like to remind all Clubhouse Members who have been enjoying golf privileges over the past few months that a decision has been made to revert back to our normal membership privileges effective September 1. If any of our current Clubhouse Members are interested in maintaining this privilege all that needs to be done is for you to request a membership conversion to a General Member by sending me an email at [email protected] I look forward to seeing each of you in the coming month. Shane L. Honaker, CCM

Vegetable Oil 3 Vidalia or Texas Sweet Onions, large diced 7 Garlic cloves, crushed 2 Jalapeno Peppers, seeds removed and minced ¼ Cup Chili Powder 1 Tbl. Cumin 6 Tbl. Cilantro, fresh and coarsely chopped Salt and Pepper to taste Procedure: Combine all ingredients except the chicken and let rest for 20 minutes. Add the chicken or your preferred meat\grilling vegetables and marinate overnight. Drain well before grilling and place on grill farthest away from direct heat to avoid charring. Here at Edgewood Country Club, our Culinary Staff is full of individuals with special talents and skills. Although it may not be known to all, it is our
pleasure to accommodate special requests that are made in order to provide a more personal dining experience. Please let me and my team know so we can
make that special evening or event come true. As we slowly transition back into traditional dining here at the club, I’m happy to announce the return of
the grill menu. I would also like to invite you to join Mr. John Brown and I, as we collaborate on a wine dinner event in the coming weeks. The Labor Day
Cookout is being planned and will be an event to be a part of with freshly prepared food right off the grill.
As Labor Day approaches, there are some of us die-hard barbecue fans who
are not ready to put that grill away. This is definitely one of my favorite times to experiment with contemporary ideas as well as bringing out the old standbys. It’s a time when weekend warriors can hold their own when
debating hand-me-down recipes with seasoned professionals. It’s a time when there’s no need to be a great saucier but simply someone who enjoys cooking
with common sense and has a natural feel for good food. Lastly, it’s time for having friends and neighbors over to appreciate each other and what Mother
Nature has blessed us with. Try this southwest marinade with your preferred meat or grilling vegetables.

All of July was hot and the first 3 weeks were very dry. The temperatures stayed in 90’s with a little rain and humidity towards the end of the month. These type of weather conditions make it a challenge to maintain turf quality. Cool nights help the turf grow and heal itself, But we have not had many cool nights. GREEN SPEED is hard to obtain and keep the greens healthy enough to with stand high temperatures. So during weather extremes its better to be safe than sorry. That being said it is not unusual to take the greens to the edge of death for a tournament like the WV OPEN or similar but not for everyday play. Many factors can alter green speed on any given day. Cooling greens in the afternoon when greens are under heat stress will slow the ball. Also foot prints, golfers that drag their feet, ball marks not repaired right, mowers going to fast, not rolling regularly because of heat, not mowing regularly because of heat, rain and or irrigation. Growth regulators help get green speed but can damage turf in high heat if the rate is not adjusted. I want green speed as much or more than the best golfer but dead ugly greens will not allow me to sleep at night. Please remember some form of faster greens will be obtained for tournaments, but not for everyday play in July and August THANKS EVERYONE Kenny Eggleston Golf Course Superintendent

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SUMMER
1. Drink plenty of water Water cleanses the body and allows your body to function more efficiently. Make sure you are drinking about 16 ounces every 30 minutes, before, during, and after exercise. Some sports drinks such as Power Aid and Gatorade have special ingredients that help replenish fluid to prevent dehydration.
2. Get outdoors Our state is beautiful and exploring the great outdoors can be a helpful distraction to the chore of exercising. Make a list of outdoor activities that you want to participate in over the summer and schedule them!
3. Establish your support network When trying to get into shape, it is important to have family and friends who actively support you. Many times, the people in your life can sabotage your success. This means they need to respect your goals and not offer you wrong foods, or try to pull you away from your exercise program. Explain to them how important this is to you and you need their encouragement.
4. Accountability Follow a training program and keep records for accountably If you are really serious about your goals, it helps to establish and commit to a training plan. A program will keep you focused and allow you to set short term goals. Tracking your progress will also allow you to assess what’s working and what’s not.
5. Eat small meals frequently Eat more frequently but in smaller portions. The more often you eat, the higher your metabolic rate. A higher metabolism burns more calories a day. Eat 5-6 smaller meals a day to ensure adequate nutrients to build muscle and burn fat.
6. Get creative Too busy for fitness? Change your social and eating habits to promote healthy lifestyle changes. Instead of eating a heavy lunch, pack a lunch and go for a walk. You can sip on a protein drink or snack of fruit while enjoying a nice brisk walk to break up your stressful work day. You will feel refreshed and more invigorated for your afternoon tasks.
7.Be patient If you took the winter off, don’t expect to reach your fitness goals in a week or two. It’s more important that you enjoy the summer while appreciating the efforts that you’re making. Focus on what you want to accomplish daily in your physical activity and the results will follow. Getting fit takes time and with commitment, you will reach your goals.
8. Breathe during exercise When exercising, there is a proper way to breath that will allow adequate amounts of oxygen into the system and providing better endurance. For example, marathon runners will tell you that they use a rhythm when running that allows them to run longer and healthier than normal breathing.
9. Love yourself Accept the fact that we are all built differently and that love comes from within. Always love yourself for who you are inside. As long as you are eating right, exercising, and doing your best, you will be healthy and happy. Do the best you can and love the inside beauty more than the outside beauty.
10.Remember to have fun Keep in mind that the summer is supposed to create some of the best memories of the year. So relax and enjoy your activity and let’s get healthy.
