Unknown Cause, TegallinggahPaddy Fields Fail Harvest

Almapura (Bali Post) –Hundred hectares of paddy fields

in four subak (irrigation) atTegallinggah Village, Karangasem, failed for harvest. No rice was pro-duced from 90 percent of the plantscaused all still green stems taken offso it can be cow’s food, resulting IDR600 million losses.

Two farmers met at subak BalePunduk, Tegallinggah, last Tuesday (2/8) stated the farmers did not know whathave caused it. Farmer I Gede Suta(47) explained during the first two tothree weeks it seems growing well yetwhen there’s suppose to be filled withrice it became white like moulded anddying with no rice in it. FarmerMangku Raka Kusuma stated thesame, not only those at subak balepunduk reaching 50 hectares but alsoon the other four subak there is in heretotalling up to hundreds of hectarescould be damaged. It was said farm-ers have followed the suggestions ofthe Field Socialisation Workers (PPL)

for Agriculture in plantation and ma-nure usage. They suspect it could bedue to the year’s season.

In the other hand, Head ofKarangasem Agriculture, Food andHorticulture Plantation Agency,Komang Subratayasa, S.P. explainedthe rice plants did not fail its harvestbut only got its production down dueto the nature’s situation besides its wayof planting including manure usage. He said he didn’t think all farmers didit as suggested by PPL where unggulpaddies need complete manure prod-ucts to be produced maximally. Yet,farmers tend to only use one which isurea as they tend to not have the moneyto buy complete manureproducts.Besides that, observationfrom Karangasem markets such as inAbang traditional market, rice pricehas gone higher as customers will haveto pay IDR 10,000 per kg for best qual-ity rice while IDR 8,000 per kg for C4type causing those who are middleclass seemed burdened by it. Price of sugar andPrice of sugar andPrice of sugar andPrice of sugar andPrice of sugar andcooking oil increasescooking oil increasescooking oil increasescooking oil increasescooking oil increasesDenpasar (Bali Post)—

Entering the first week in August, the price of a number of basic needs such as sugar andcooking oil rose between IDR 200 to IDR 500 per kilogram following the surge in the price ofrice. Based on observation in a number of traditional markets, the average price of commodityremained to show an increase. Mainly the price of rice tended to increase because the supplyfrom Java was declining.

Division Head of Home TradeAffairs, Bali Trade and IndustryAgency, Bagus Ketut Wijaya, saidon Tuesday (Aug 2) the price of ninebasic needs were relatively stable, while the increase and decline onlyoccurred to one to two other com-modities such as the price of sugarfrom IDR 10,500 to IDR 11,000 perkilogram, or increased by IDR 500.Similarly, palm oil showed an in-crease as much as IDR 500 rupiah,to IDR 10,500 from the previousprice at IDR 10,000. On the otherhand, the price hike also happenedto chicken egg namely in the pricerange of IDR 18.500 per kilogramand the price of kampong chickenegg was IDR 28,500 per kilogram.

Previously, the price hike alsooccurred to super local rice of IR64 sold around IDR 8,000 per kilo-gram from price range of IDR 7,800

per kilogram and the rice broughtin from outside Bali like Putri Sejatiwas sold at IDR 8,500 from IDR8,400 per kilogram, Putri Agung atIDR 8,000 per kilogram and Ratuat IDR 8,000 per kilogram. BagusWijaya said the price hike to somecommodities was caused by highdemand in early fasting month aswell as declining supply due to in-ter-island trade.

“People and restaurateurs neednot worry if the stock of basic needswill disappear in the market be-cause Bali Trade and IndustryAgency has taken a policy to securethe basic food stock in Bali,” hesaid. According to him, based onexperience in the previous year, inthe midst of surging demand forbasic food all people were still ableto get their need. On that account, entering the fasting month and by

the Eid festivity this year the situa-tion was predicted the same eventhough there was a price hike dueto the law of business behind thehigh demand of community.

“The hike of selling prices ofsome basic needs is not caused byreducing stock, but genuinelycaused by the law of business tolook for profits in the middle offeast situation,” he said. Mean-while, a number of basic food trad-ers in Badung market recognizedthe existence of price hike to somebasic commodities.

“Within the past few days, thetwo basic commodities such assugar and cooking oil underwentprice surge. By and large, the cook-ing oil will tend to continuouslyexperience a price surge,” ex-plained Putu Wardi, a trader inBadung market. (bit)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Having been delayed for long

time, the arrangement project ofDenpasar City hub in the form pe-destrian walkway on Jalan GajahMada has now been resumed. Ar-rangement of the fifth phase willinclude the repair of Tukad BadungBridge, sidewalks, planter, gardenand store name uniformity. The ar-rangement will commence from theTukad Badung Bridge until the westend of Jalan Gajah Mada. However, this project does not include the in-stallment of paving blocks.

Technical executive officer(PPTK) of the project, PutuSukardja, when met in the office ofDenpasar Mayor on Tuesday (Aug2) said the heritage arrangementproject of Denpasar City area hadstarted to be worked on. However, the project could not be entirelyaccomplished because of insuffi-cient fund. “For a while, the fifthphase includes the arrangement ofsidewalks, park as well as the storename,” he said.

He mentioned that installation ofpaving blocks would be resumed inthe project of the upcoming year2012. After the sixth phase ended,it would be continued with the ar-rangement of other areas downtownDenpasar such as Jalan Thamrin aswell as other roads within the cen-ter of the city. “Due to restrictedbudget, the project is undertaken instages,” said Sukardja who is alsothe Division Head of Spatial Plan-ning in the Spatial Planning andHousing Agency (DTRP) ofDenpasar.

Sukardja said the fifth phaseproject was worked on by PTWahyu Prima with the budget ofover IDR 800 million. Arrangementof this phase would end in Decem-ber 2011. His party expected thatafter the arrangement, face of thecity would be more picturesque pur-suant to the existing design plan. However, during the project underprogress, his party did hope the

Pedestrian walkway of GajahMada starts to be worked on

community could understand aboutthe impact of the project implemen-tation. “We are asking for the aware-ness of the community because theywill be disturbed during the projectimplementation,” he hoped.

Sukardja admitted though theproject had been delayed for longtime, the increasing amount of thearrangement project fund was nottoo large. Additionally, provision ofthe funds was realized in stages, soit did not undergo any changes.“Amount of the budget in use isdepending on the price set when thetender was stipulated,” he said.

As known, the arrangement ofroad along 800 meters was begunfrom the intention of DenpasarMunicipality to improve the exist-ence of function, visual and physicof Jalan Gajah Mada area. Since thepresence of a number of modernshopping centers within the culture-based city, Jalan Gajah Mada startedto be left by consumers. Denpasardwellers preferred shopping inmalls or supermarkets to stores lo-cated along the Jalan Gajah Mada.

Jalan Gajah Mada Denpasarstarting to be abandoned by citydwellers got attention fromDenpasar Municipality to be furtherarranged. Denpasar Spatial Plan-ning and Housing Agency was as-signed to arrange the area. Havingbeen researched by a team of plan-ning consultant the arrangement hadbeen eventually undertaken sinceFebruary 2007. Arrangement ofJalan Gajah Mada’s corridor of thefirst stage spent IDR 422 million oftotal budgets worth IDR 6.6 billion.Meanwhile, for the second stagewas allocated a budget up to IDR551 million and had been workedon since September 2007. After ac-complishing the second phase, theproject was continued with the ar-rangement of space next to the vil-lage/puseh temple of Denpasar. Ar-rangement in the area included themaking of wall and garden.(kmb12)

Singaraja (Bali Post)—Shortage of elementary school teachers in

Buleleng Regency seems to have not been resolvedso that it kindles repeated complaints. Even, in someprimary schools there are only three or four teach-ers. As consequence, the learning and teaching ac-tivities are unable to run properly.

Head of Buleleng Education Agency, GedeSuyasa, said on Monday (Aug 1) there were 488primary schools in Buleleng. Ideally, every primaryschool had ten teachers so there should be totally4,880 primary school teachers in Buleleng. How-ever, at the moment there were only 3,875 primary

Shortage of teacher remains a dilemmaschool teachers. “On that account, the shortage ismore than one thousand teachers,” he said.

If the overall primary school teachers were inad-equate, Suyasa said, no matter where those teacherswould be moved in Buleleng they would remain in-adequate. Last year, a number of civil servant teach-ers were recruited through a regular recruitment(CPNS). However, the number of teachers recruitedapparently was not balanced with the number ofteachers entering their retirement period. “The re-cruited teachers are fewer than the retired teachers,so the teachers in Buleleng continue to decrease,” hesaid. Lawyers for Adli asked for thehead of the council, Field MarshalMohamed Hussein Tantawi, andother political, military and secu-rity officials to be summoned as

witnesses in the trial, shortly beforethe judge called a recess. Alaa andGamal Mubarak, in the white out-fits of defendants, stood next to theirfather in the iron cage customarilyused in criminal trials in Egypt.

Gamal, once viewed as beinggroomed for the presidency, leanedover to speak to his father, who hada stand with a drip beside him. Alaa,a businessman, seemed to be hold-ing a Koran. Charges range fromconspiring to kill protesters to abus-ing office to amass wealth.

The trial, televised around theworld, transfixed Egyptians andother Arabs, most of whom havespent their lives under authoritariansystems shaken by this year’s waveof unrest.

South Korea offered aid worth 5billion won ($4.7 million) to flood-hitNorth Korea on Wednesday, its firstsuch proposal since Pyongyang’sdeadly island attack last Novembersent relations into deep freeze. TheNorth, which even in normal timesstruggles to feed its people, has re-ported dozens of casualties, thousandshomeless and large areas of farmlandflooded following a storm and torren-tial rain this summer.

The South’s offer came amid signsof an easing of high cross-border ten-sions. Nuclear negotiators from thetwo sides held rare talks last month onthe sidelines of a regional securitymeeting in Bali. Seoul’s unificationministry said the offer of medicine anddaily necessities was made through theSouth’s Red Cross. If the North ac-cepted it, talks would be held on ship-ping arrangements across the tenseborder.

Ministry officials said the new aid

S. Korea offers N. Korea flood aidpackage would not include rice andcement. Official media in the commu-nist state has said a tropical storm andheavy rain in June and July left doz-ens either dead, injured or missing, destroyed 2,900 homes and floodedmore than 60,000 hectares (148,200acres) of farmland.

Floods are common in North Ko-rea, mainly because of its lack of di-saster-control infrastructure and severedeforestation of hillsides. Ties havebeen icy since the South accused itsneighbour of sinking a warship inMarch 2010 with the loss of 46 lives.

Despite that incident, for which theNorth denied responsibility, the Southin September 2010 promised a 10 bil-lion won flood aid package. But it sus-pended shipments after the Northkilled four South Koreans in a bom-bardment of a border island last No-vember. A global relief agency saidseparately it has allocated more than$590,000 to help the flood victims.

He said terrorist actions in Indo-nesia were fluctuative but based onKopassus’ study their intensity hascontinued to drop from 2000 to 2008.

“Perhaps only 40 percent of radi-cal actions are left,” he said.

He said he saw TNI could play arole in the fight in view of the cases.Among activities that could be catego-rized as terrorist actions are bombing, hijacking, killing, ambushes, kidnap-ping, hostage taking, robbery and in-timidation.

“TNI has often been involved indealing with hostage taking,” he said.

He said TNI‘s involvement in ter-rorism fight is limited and must bebased on Law Number 2 of 2002 onpolice and Law Number 15 of 2003on terrorism. Based on the laws TNI‘sinvolvement is also limited, he said.

Article 7 of Law Number 34 of2004 meanwhile states that TNI helpspolice overcome terrorism but in real-

He said terrorism is dealt with bythree institutions namely TNI, thepolice and the ministry of home af-fairs. They all have intelligence agen-cies down to village levels.

The army has apparatus from pro-vincial to sub district military com-mands and so do the police and theministry of home affairs.

“Their synergy may be developedand so no new institution will be

Kite as an expression of grati-tude and happiness of peasants ontheir successful harvest to God-dess Sri (manifestation of God inHindu belief). In addition, kite-flying is also done by farmers asa means to drive out pest birds. However, its material and designis very simple as it is made fromlarge-size leaves, where its tail ismade of reeds and the rope madeof banana fiber.

In its function to dispel birds,a kite is usually combined with ascarecrow to scare birds. It is theway how farmers attempt tomaintain the ecosystems onearth. It is also believed that ev-ery living being on earth musthave its own role.

Later on, kite turns more popu-lar and is even played by variouscircles, ranging from children, teens to parents. For them, the kiteis not made to be pitted. Enjoyingthe beauty of design and motionin the air can meet their satisfac-tion as every single curve emitsspecific impression for lovers of

Kite as Integral Partof Balinese Culture

Kite does not only pose a game being able to make fun and happy, but also becomes a cultureof Bali. In the folklore Rare Angon, it is narrated about the proximity of kite to the life of Hinducommunity in Bali. Rare Angon describes a child who was often riding a cow while playing akite in the rice fields after harvest season.

this game.Kite lovers in Bali are very sen-

sitive to the design and proportionof kites they have made. There-fore, a kite with the right shapeand proportions will lead to a pro-longed admiration for them. Moreover, if the kite has a largesize and matching color they willenjoy it like a high prestigiouswork of art.

In the matter of color, Balinesepeople are using four colors fortheir traditional kites, such asblack, red, white and yellow. If thefour colors arranged appropri-ately, when the kite is flying withthe background of blue sky willlook very beautiful. In addition, beauty of the kite can also be seenfrom its beautiful movement likea lively Balinese dancer.

Even, if the fish-style (bebean)kite is unable to sway to left andright side will not be interesting. However, it will become less at-tractive or elegant, if the swayingis imbalance. Unlike the type ofJanggan and Pecuk, they will be

considered beautiful if they fly ina stable position because peopleenjoy the undulating movementsof their tail resembling the move-ment of water.

Pecukan kite (resembling astingray) is categorized into thetype of kite whose the making hashigh level of difficulty because itrequires expertise and experience. In addition, there is also anothertype of kite known as pere-pereanhaving square shape. Kite of thistype will look attractive if the ropeis played and the kite will spin inthe air. At particular time, the kitecan be settled in a stable position.

Furthermore, there are someother kites namely Dedari (angel),Kedis-Kedisan (bird-like), drag-onflies and some animal species. All kites are usually played at har-vest time during high winds. Therefore, it is not surprising ifmany groups or association of kiteaficionados appearing during thisseason that make large kites to beflown together or put into kitecompetition. Advancement of science of tech-nology does not answer all prob-lems encountered by human life. Inagriculture, for instance, modernfarmers can now have boosted thequantity of production, even inmultiple amounts. On the one had,it’s a great success but on the otherhand it still leaves a problem on thedecline of environmental and hu-man health quality.

Green revolution occurred be-tween 1943 and 1970s through theimplementation of chemical fertil-izer and good irrigation system hasconjured up the rice production. Inshort term, it became an efficaciousmedicine to resolve the famine intropical countries. Few decadeslater, it had an impact on the reduc-tion of environmental quality, likepollution in water, land and others.Apart from the impact on the envi-ronment, it was also had an impacton human health like the rise ofsome new cancers.

Realizing these facts, now Balihas an initiative to become a greenprovince and implement the inte-grated farming system (Simantri).Hopefully, implementation of thesystem could realize the Bali Or-ganic plan and consequently mini-mize the environmental destruction.Green province campaign includessome aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green andclean. Green culture is intended to

Spiritual Farming:From One Green to Some other Greens

change the societal behavior inmanaging their waste managementand environment. Green economyhints that all economic activitiesshould be in the eco-friendly ori-entation. These two aspects willempty out into the initiative of BaliOrganic.

One of the aspects is applied inthe agricultural field. Socializationhas been intensified while establish-ing farmer groups. Through breed-ing local cows, for instance, farm-ers are expected to get maximalbenefits. Other than increasing thenumber of cows, they will be ableto take advantage the cow dung andurine for organic fertilizers. In thelong run, it will reduce the use ofchemical fertilizers and pesticides.Of course, this endeavor will reducethe production cost that should bespent by farmers and at the sametime increase the quality of rice aswell as improve the environmentalquality.

As a matter of fact, simple prac-tice of this concept could have beenseen around 1970s. Farmers usingcows to cultivate their land couldalso take advantage of their cowdung. It was spread out onto the ricefield and its efficacy could last forat least for two planting seasons. Interraced rice field, it could uniquelybe managed by establishing acowshed in the upper stream. Lateron, the collected dry cow dung was

channeled to rice field through thewater gutter.

However, since being urged bythe demand to multiple the rice pro-duction, farmers left the method. In-troduction of hand tractor andchemical fertilizers gradually re-placed the role of cows. The newmethod was expected to acceleratethe land cultivation process. As con-sequence, cows were only servingas ‘family saving’ for farmers.

Simple eco-friendly pest controlactually has been proposed in thepalm-leaf manuscript entitled “ShriTattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.”It has been applied by subak com-munity in Bali from generation togeneration until today. However, itseems to put more emphasis on theritual aspect only, while herbal pes-ticide or other means of the obla-tion is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managedby offering two pieces of ketupatsidayu together with oblation andside dish of yellow dragonfly.

Meanwhile, Subash Palekarfrom India claimed to have devel-oped the vedic-based farming. Hehas initiated his ‘spiritual farming’since 1988. In essence he said thatGod or nature has provided humanwith everything required to growplants. So implementing the chemi-cal fertilizers and pesticide meansto oppose God and will result in badimpact to human. (BTN/punia)

SINGAPORE - In a matterof days, investor relief that theUnited States avoided defaulthas been replaced by fearsEurope’s debt crisis is deepen-ing and the world’s biggesteconomy may be slipping backinto recession.

Former Treasury SecretaryLawrence Summers said in aReuters column there is a onein three chance of a U.S. reces-sion. According to numbercrunching by Goldman Sachs, history suggests the economy isperilously close to tipping overthe edge.

Signs are little better else-where. Italy and Spain are edg-ing closer to the euro area debtdanger zone, China’s economyis slowing and Japan is miredin recession after the Marchearthquake.

The gloom is hitting the cor-porate world as analysts cutearnings forecasts globally, es-pecially in export-led econo-mies, and big banks have an-nounced tens of thousands ofjob cuts.

“The odds of the economygoing back into recession are atleast one in three if nothingnew is done to raise demandand spur growth,” Summerssaid of the United States in hiscolumn.

“If these judgments are close tocorrect, relief will soon give wayto alarm about the United States’seconomic and fiscal future.”

BEIJING — China’s central bank governor urged Washington to handle its debt responsibly, warning Wednesday that uncertainty in the market for Treasury debt might harm a globaleconomic recovery.

China is the biggest foreignowner of Treasury debt and hadappealed to U.S. leaders to pro-tect its $1.1 billion in holdingsduring last week’s debate overraising Washington’s borrowinglimit and avoiding a possible de-fault.

In a statement, ZhouXiaochuan welcomed the deal byAmerican leaders to raise the limitbut also called for Washington toavoid further steps that might hurtinvestors.

“Large fluctuations and uncer-tainties in this market would un-dermine the stability of the inter-national financial system andhinder global recovery,” Zhousaid. The central bank took theunusual step of posting his com-ments in both English and Chineseon its website, clearly aiming toreach a foreign audience.

Treasury debt is among themost widely held assets and oftenis used as the benchmark for in-terest rates on commercial credit.

Any changes due to uncertaintyabout U.S. finances could haveglobal repercussions by pushingup borrowing costs.

“China hopes the U.S. admin-istration and the Congress wouldtake responsible policy measuresto handle its debt issue in lightwith the interests of the wholeworld including those of theUnited States,” Zhou said.

He gave no details of possiblemeasures China wants to see.

The statement came after Presi-

dent Barack Obama signed legis-lation Tuesday to raiseWashington’s $14.3 trillion bor-rowing limit just hours before amidnight deadline.

Beijing is believed to be diver-sifying its foreign currency re-serves but Treasurys are expectedto remain a big part of its portfo-lio. Few other asset markets are bigenough to absorb the tens of bil-lions of dollars China’s centralbank adds to its reserves each year.

Also Wednesday, a Chinese rat-ing agency said it has downgradedWashington’s credit rating fromA+ to A.

The move by Dagong GlobalCredit Rating Co., which is little-known abroad, is unlikely to affect

U.S. borrowing rates but reflectsthe pessimism Washington’s debtbattle has generated worldwide.

Dagong said the debt dealdoesn’t change the fact that U.S.debt growth has outpaced itseconomy and fiscal revenue. Itwarned earlier of a possible down-grade if the United States didn’tshow it had the ability and will-ingness to repay its debt.

Dagong hopes to compete withglobal ratings agencies Moody’s,Standard & Poor’s and Fitch.

Moody’s Investors Service saidTuesday the United States wouldretain the agency’s highest AAArating. But it put a “negative” out-look on the rating, raising the pos-sibly of a future downgrade.

Debt relief replaced with recession fearThe alarm bells may already be

ringing. Most worryingly for fi-nancial markets, the U.S.administration’s commitment tofiscal spending cuts could makeany U.S. downturn worse.

“The slide in U.S. growth ex-pectations clearly comes withvery poor t iming,” saidCommerzbank strategist RainerGuntermann.

The bellwether S&P 500 indexdropped more than 2.5 percent onTuesday to wipe out 2011 gainsafter data showed U.S. consumerspending fell in June for the firsttime in nearly two years.

The figures underlined thefrail state of the U.S. economy, which grew at less than a 1 per-cent annualized rate in the firsthalf of 2011 in what DeutscheBank describes as a growth reces-sion, not recovery.

Worryingly for investors, theS&P index crashed through its200-day moving average, point-ing to further weakness ahead.

“I think the conditions havecompletely changed this week,”said Koichi Ono, senior strategistat Daiwa Securities Capital Mar-kets in Tokyo.

“Until last week, people havebeen saying the U.S. debt ceilingwas the problem. Now they talkabout worries about the health ofthe economy.”

Asian shares followed suit onWednesday, falling more than 2percent. Worried investors re-turned to the safe havens theyused during the U.S. debt talks, pushing gold to a fresh record

high and keeping the Swiss francclose to a record high against thedollar.

Financial market pressure in-creased on Italy and Spain, push-ing their borrowing costs to 14-year highs and sparking emer-gency talks among EUpolicymakers.

The economies of Spain andItaly are much bigger than Ire-land, Portugal and Greece thathave been bailed out so far in theeuro area debt crisis.

The rise in yields is the latestsign investors feel policymakershave not done enough to resolvethe debt crisis.

“The fear of the market is thatthe world is going into recession... and in the euro zone the pe-ripheral markets are the ones thatwill suffer most ,” saidAlessandro Giansanti, a strate-gist at ING Amsterdam.

Views on the economic out-look were rapidly being revised, with JPMorgan cutting its fore-cast on 2012 U.S. growth to 1percent and markets reflectingexpectations of more than 80 ba-sis points of rate cuts in commod-ity exporter Australia — 60 ba-sis points more than a day ago.

If the U.S. unemployment ratekeeps rising, it would be a strongwarning signal that the U.S.economy is close to another re-cession, Goldman Sachs says.

Its examination of unemploy-ment figures dating back to 1948shows there is a 76 percentchance the U.S. economy is ei-ther in recession or will be within

six months when the jobless raterises by a little over three-tenthsof a percentage point over athree-month period.

If data on Friday shows a job-less rate of 9.3 percent for July, and it stays at that level in Au-gust, those conditions will havebeen met.

Friday’s report is expected toshow the unemployment rate heldsteady in July at 9.2 percent.

Carmakers such as Chryslerand General Motors Co are feel-ing the impact of the weak con-sumer spending. The U.S. marketis “tougher than a cheap steak,”said Chrysler ’s head of U.S.sales, Reid Bigland.

Washington’s agreement to cutfuture spending leaves the admin-istration with no room to loosenits fiscal belt to support the stum-bling economy, especially withthe threat of a ratings downgrade.

That puts more pressure on theFederal Reserve, which meetsnext Tuesday to review policy, tostrengthen its commitment torock-bottom interest rates or evenconsider a third round of quanti-tative easing.

“It’s too soon to go to some-thing like full scale QE3, but it’snot too soon to signal concern,”said John Richards, head of strat-egy at RBS Americas.

Although America dominatesthe world economy, there aresigns of a slowdown globally.

The world’s manufacturingsector came close to stalling inJuly, expanding at its shallowestpace in two years. New orders

fell for the first time since ma-jor economies were recoveringfrom the global financial crisis,a report by JP Morgan showed.

A purchasing managers’ in-dex from HSBC showedChina’s factory sector shrankin July, although a governmentmeasure showed it maintainedweak growth.

Many economists sayChina’s slowdown this year ismodest and not a sign of animpending slump. But somesay Beijing is treading a fineline between fostering growthand fighting inflation as itstightening campaign runs intoits 10th month.

Sensitive to the ups anddowns of the global economiccycle, banks have announcedclose to 50,000 job cuts, start-ing now and continuing in com-ing years. HSBC and LloydsBanking Group have an-nounced the biggest cuts.

Analysts are cutting earn-ings forecasts globally, withthose in export-dependenteconomies such as Taiwan,Singapore and Australia bear-ing the biggest cuts.

Out of 22,000 stocks trackedover the past 30 days, analystshave downgraded their earn-ings estimates by 0.5 percenton a mean basis.

Nearly 75 percent ofchanges in estimates in Taiwanhave been downgrades. In Aus-tralia, 65 percent were down-grades and in Switzerland itwas nearly 80 percent.

NEW YORK — There’s a bigdifference between “mother” and“mom.” “Mother” is someone tobe respected, perhaps held atarm’s length. But “mom” is anintimate name. It’s the woman onthe floor playing with her child, wisps of hair falling around herface, instead of the woman in thestarched dress sitting in the par-lor.

The distinction made all thedifference for novelist Kyung-Sook Shin, whose book “PleaseLook After Mom” has made asplash in the United States and isa best-seller in her native SouthKorea.

On a recent day in New York,Shin discussed, through her trans-lator, the popularity of the noveland its universal themes of motherand child, and the gradual real-ization that all our moms actuallyhave a life outside the family andare women with thoughts and de-sires.

The book centers on a modern-day family coping with griefwhen their mother, known only asMom, vanishes in a busy city trainstation. The story tracks thewoman’s disappearance throughthe eyes of her children, her hus-band and, ultimately, through herown words. The first line reads:“It’s been one week since Momwent missing.”

WOMEN who have experi-enced rape or other abuse have farhigher rates of mental disordersand are up to 20 times more likelyto attempt suicide than other fe-males, an Australian studyshowed Wednesday. The findings, reported in the Journal of theAmerican Medical Association, showed a very strong associationbetween exposure to gender-based violence and mental disor-der, said study leader Susan Rees.

“Based on other studies, weexpected there to be a correlationand an association, but thestrength of it was particularly con-cerning,” said Rees, from theSchool of Psychiatry at the Uni-versity of New South Wales. “Notonly was there a higher rate (ofmental disorder) but there wasalso a greater severity.”

Researchers analysed the re-sults of a national survey of 4,451women aged 16 to 85 conductedby the Australian Bureau of Sta-tistics in 2007. They looked at thefour more common types of abuse— physical violence by an inti-mate partner, rape, other sexualassault and stalking — and therate of mental disorders such as

Massive deforestation has madeBrazil one of the world’s top green-house gas emitters, and the pace ofdeforestation peaked in 2004 at27,000 square kilometers (10,000square miles) a year.

By 2010, however, it haddropped to 6,500 square kilometers, thanks in part to the INPE’s Real-Time Deforestation Detection Sys-tem (DETER), which allows re-searchers to collect new satelliteimages on a daily basis.

However, the system can onlymonitor areas of 25 hectares (60acres) or more, so its results are notconsidered definitive.

LONDON - Brazil great Pelesays in-demand compatriot Neymarshould follow his example and staywith Santos rather than move toEurope. The striker’s performancesfor Santos have drawn comparisonswith Pele at the same age and the19-year-old has been linked to bothChelsea and Manchester City in theEnglish Premier League.

However, the 70-year-old Pele, who won three World Cups andspent virtually all his career atSantos, thinks Neymar would bebest served by developing at home.

“He can be a great player, he canbe like (Lionel) Messi or Ronaldo,no doubt,” Pele told reporters at anevent in London to launch an opusfor the New York Cosmos, wherehe ended his career. “But I think it’sa little complicated for him to moveto a club in England or Italy at themoment. The marking is very tightthere.

“He would find that a little diffi-cult because he’s very young. Thegame is very physical in Englandand Italy. Maybe in Holland orFrance or even Spain it would bebetter for him.”

With Brazil hosting the WorldCup in 2014, Pele believes it wouldbe good for his country’s chancesto keep Neymar away from theclutches of Europe’s biggest clubs.

“I think it is very difficult to keephim in Brazil,” Pele said. “Santosis my team and he started there withus. I hope he stays there until moreor less the 2014 World Cup but itwill be a little difficult to keep himhere. “He hasn’t reached his poten-tial yet, but he is already an excel-lent player.”

NEW YORK - The National Basketball Association filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against theplayers’ union seeking a ruling that the lockout of players does not violate antitrust laws. TheNBA said the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, arises from the union’s threatened useof antitrust litigation to extract a more favorable contract in ongoing negotiations.

faith.William Hunter, executive di-

rector of the players’ association, said in a statement that the NBA’sactions “are just another exampleof their bad-faith bargaining, andwe will seek the complete dis-missal of the actions as they aretotally without merit.” Through-out the negotiations for a new col-lective bargaining agreement, theNBA said, the players’ union has

repeatedly threatened to renounceits role as the bargaining represen-tative of the NBA players.

In its lawsuit, the NBA calledthe threat “an impermissible ne-gotiating tactic” designed only tocommence an antitrust challengeto the lockout and gain leveragein contract negotiations. The NBAcontended that the same tactic waspursued by the National FootballLeague players’ union in its most

recent collective bargaining nego-tiations.

In his statement, Hunter saidthe union has not made any deci-sion about renouncing its role asthe collective bargaining repre-sentative of the players.

“We urge the NBA to engagewith us at the bargaining table andto use more productively the shorttime we have left before the 2011-2012 season is seriously jeopar-dized,” he said. In its lawsuit, theNBA also said it is seeking a rul-ing that federal courts lack juris-diction to block the lockout. Thelawsuit comes a day after NBAofficials and players’ representa-tives met for the first time since

the league declared a lockout onJuly 1.

The dispute involves how tosplit some $4.3 billion in total rev-enues. The NBA says an overhaulof the pay structure is needed af-ter 22 of the 30 NBA teams lostmoney last year.

If the dispute is not resolvedbefore the beginning of the sea-son this fall, it could result in theleague’s first work stoppage since1998, when a lockout shortenedthe season to 50 games from 82.

The Maranello squad has turned its fortunes around aftera poor first part of the year, and now Ferrari has been fight-ing in front, with Fernando Alonso having won the BritishGrand Prix and having finished second in Valencia andNurburgring and third in Hungary.

PIRELLI has revealed the tyre com-pounds that it will take to the the nextthree races in Belgium, Italy andSingapore.

For the Spa and Monza races, the Ital-ian manufacturer will take the medium andthe soft compounds, while the Singaporenight event will see the return of the softand super soft combination.

The soft and the super soft were thetyres used in Monaco, Canada and Hun-gary, while the soft/medium combinationhas been the most common in recent raceslike Britain.

“We’re learning more and more withevery race in our first year of Formula 1,and fine-tuning our compound choices tobenefit from the valuable information thatwe are accumulating,” said Pirelli’s PaulHembery.

“We’ve got three of the most thrillingraces on the entire calendar coming up,and we believe that we’ve arrived at sometyre nominations that are very well-suitedto the characteristics of these very differ-ent but equally exciting circuits.
