Township Transportation During Winter Weather Conditions
The Senior Center staff makes every effort to provide transportation on a daily basis. In the event of inclement weather, safety is our first priority and decisions are based on various road, weather, staffing and safety considerations. The Edison Senior Citizen Center reserves the right to cancel any and all transportation services based on information obtained related to snow, rain and road conditions. Residents are encouraged to call the Edison Senior Center at 732-248- 7345 with any questions or concerns regarding the status of transportation services and our ability to transport clients.
Club Transportation: Each club president will make the decision as to whether or not a club meeting is to be cancelled due to inclement weather. The club president will notify the senior center of his/her decision and will contact club members to advise of the cancellation.
Medical Transportation: In the event of inclement weather, every effort will be made to safely transport clients scheduled for medical appointments, but those individuals receiving life-sustaining treatments will be given priority. Food Shopping Transportation: Should there be a need to cancel
regularly scheduled food shopping routes calls will be placed to participants by senior center staff members to cancel services. If possible, alternate shopping arrangements will be made. Nutrition: The decision to cancel the Senior Lunch Program will be made by the Middlesex County Office on Aging. The nutrition site manager will contact participants.
Senior Lunch Program
Winter weather keeps many folks inside their home, often alone. Beat the winter doldrums and join our senior lunch program.
Free transportation is available daily to enjoy a meal (suggested donation is
$2.25 per meal) at the Edison Senior Center with old friends, new friends, and friends you have yet to meet.
To join the senior meals program, please contact Peggy, our nutrition site manager at 732-452-0377 regarding registration, transportation and donations.
For those unable to come to the senior center, Peggy can also explain the Meals on Wheels Home Deliver Program.
Winter Safety Tips for Seniors
1. Listen to weather reports regularly.
2. Have a battery-powered radio and flashlight along with extra batteries, so you can
still listen to the weather news during a storm.
3. Stock up on fresh water and dried or canned food (make sure you have a working
can opener). If you have pets, stock up on their food, too.
4. Set up a buddy system with a neighbor who will check in on you in case of a storm.
5. If you have a caregiver, make sure there is an emergency plan in place in the event
weather prevents your caregiver from getting to you.
6. Find out if your local pharmacy and grocery store make deliveries. It’s best to stay
inside as much as possible when conditions are bad. Have at least a seven-day supply
of your medications with you. If you use oxygen, have an emergency supply to last
three days or more.
7. For all your medical equipment that requires a power source, check with your
medical supply company about a backup power source.
8. Keep walkways and steps around your home clear of debris to help prevent slips
and falls.
9. Stock up on snow shovels, salt and sand. Use salt and sand on driveways and
sidewalks in the winter to melt snow and improve traction, and shovel your walkways
often. If you’re not comfortable taking these steps, ask a friend or neighbor to help.
10. If you are not comfortable with shoveling and cleaning up the snow and ice, check
your local papers or yellow book for a company who does snow removal if you do not
have a relative or neighbor who can help you.
The Township DOES NOT provide snow removal services.
11. If you are going out, let someone know where you are going and when you will
return. Always take a cell phone with you when driving.
12. If you need to go outside in cold weather, bundle up in layers of clothing, and wear
a hat, scarf and gloves. Wear shoes with proper tread to avoid slips.
