From the Editor...A lot of people don’t like

change. Me, I LOVE it! I love creating order amongst

chaos and perform better under pressure.

However, there are a lot of people that hate it and often refuse to change either themselves or their circumstances.

They would prefer to stay in the same hurting problematic relationship or situation because of fear of change.

Their hurt and fear become their anchor.

What is it about change that the average person doesn’t like?

Is it the unknown, the uncertainty?

Some people procrastinate because deep down, they are scared to take the plunge, even if it would lead to a better life.

Whether a relationship starts or ends, you’re moving, you’ve got a new job, were retrenched or you’ve lost someone you love, change—whether it’s good or bad—causes stress.

As Christians, we are in a spiritual battle of some sort daily.

You never know exactly what you’re going to get, which often frightens us.

We all have stress, but how do you deal with it?

Rest is important in your spiritual walk with the Lord, and many Christians today don’t appreciate the value of rest or keeping the Sabbath day holy.

God gave us the day to rest and to spend it with family and loved ones.

Rest allows our mind, body, and soul to renew and to focus on what is right.

However, if you still battle to face change or handle your stress, scripture is filled with God’s promises to provide rest when we seek Him.

God is an endless source of peace and strength and He created us to need Him!

Take for example the following verse:

Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who

are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

If the Creator of heaven and earth invites us to rest in Him, why are we hesitant?

Is it because our faith is not strong enough?

Is it because we don’t trust God?

Words come easy, but when it comes to action, can we trust God 100%?

We will run to our friends, pastors, go on FB to share, but will we go into our inner room and talk to God about it?

Why is it that we will lie awake at night worrying about our future, about the state of our

country and so forth, but not talk to the One that can fix everything?

I know that if we have a relationship with Him, we will say to ourselves:

“I don’t understand the road I am walking on now, but just to know that He is with me, is enough. I will trust that everything will work out to what He has planned for me.”

For us to be able to do that, we need to change.

We need to start trusting God with everything; we need to change to be obedient to His voice.

We need to change not to want to be in charge of everything.

Change and peace go hand in hand, and if you let go and let God, don’t pick up the parcels of worry and stress along the way!

Nearby towns are all very likely to contract some of these health hazards.

Themba Sibiya, Thaba Chweu Local Municipality Spokesperson responded to GPS News questions.

When asked for how long the problem has been going on, TCLM stated that the problem started around February / March 2019.

GRPA: Even if we were to ignore all other available evidence that the problems predate February 2019, just by TCLM’s own admittance in the following response, the above commentary would at the very least point to fabrication.

TCLM was asked what was done about the problem.

TCLM: “The process of appointing emergency contractors was undertaken over a year ago, but delays were experienced.

However, it is being expedited and should be concluded this week and repairs commencing early next week,” Themba Sibiya said.

GRPA: If the problems, (according to TCLM in the first response above), only date back to February 2019/ March 2019, then why were emergency contractors appointed over a year ago?

TCLM’s official statements prove to be flawed with inconsistency.

“Partially in line with their complaints to TCLM; tenders were issued, (as per Tender Bid Bulletin Notice 54 of 2019), that are largely unattended, principally because their scope of work cannot address the myriad problems at the Waste

Water Treatment Plant, (WWTP). There is debatable evidence of

irregular, fruitless and wasteful spending.” (Response from GRPA)

Has the tenders e.g. Chlorination System Servicing at WTW or Water Sampling Testing been awarded?

TCLM stated that: “The chlorination system has been repaired and is functioning.”

GRPA: G Johnson confirms that he visited and signed the register at the WWTP on Friday 23rd August 2019 to follow up the inspection visit of the 8th.

“It is true that Chlorine gas bottles are installed.

However, the two gentlemen that accompanied me around the plant were unable to comment on questions concerning the functioning of the Chlorination System, nor the Water Sample Testing.

It would appear that no able-bodied employee regarding the system, nor its procedures are present at the plant.

As mentioned in the previous article no official response to our enquiries had been received.

To date, (Saturday 24th August), I still await an official response.”

Chris de Beer, Komatiland Eco-tourism Manager, said that Komatiland is in the process of erecting signs warning people about the health hazards of the water.

“SAFCOL Ecotourism has ordered signage that warns people about the polluted water and not to swim or drink - the boards will all be erected at Forest Falls which is used by the public,” Chris said. (Response from Komatiland)

GPS News asked what can be done to repair the state of the river.

TCLM stated that “The disinfection is part of that process and the Municipality has to ensure that the components that are not functioning are fixed speedily and that is what we intend doing very soon.”

GRPA: “According to photographs taken during the site inspection, the process of rectification has not progressed at any speed worth meriting.

Other than the recently installed gas bottles there is little evidence to believe that in over a year, (according to TCLM), that the process of rectification is being attended at all.

Figuratively speaking, TCLM’s attention to the WWTP, amounts to placing plasters onto severed limbs and then dousing the wounds in iodine.

TCLM’s above comment contains little more than weak spin.”

Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA) - Annual Performance Plan 2019/20, Page B3 (18): “Water resource pollution, especially sewage leaking/spilling into the water resources, causes a serious health risk to South Africa and sharing states, Mozambique and Swaziland; Issues of concern, some of which need law enforcement include: Discharge of non-compliant effluent from non-functional sewage treatment facilities.”

Rural communities use river water.

Did TCLM warn them not to use this water as it is a health hazard?

TCLM stated that “With

chlorination currently taking place, we are confident the risk of E-coli is averted.

But the repair of other defective components must be done soon.”

GRPA: “More spin. Even if the doubtful claim that

“the risk of E-coli is averted”, from the Plant, TCLM continues to avoid the issue at hand.

Within the Wastewater System’s short fallings there is additional contamination at ancillary points to the Plant.

These should have been addressed, (within Tender Bulletin Notice 54 of 2019).”

“Contact was made with Mr S Manqele, Director of Technical Services, Thaba Chweu Municipality, who indicated that two contractors had been recruited to sort out the problem at the sewer this week.

According to concerned community members in Graskop, the sewer system has not been fully operational for more than 8 years.” (Komatiland response, Ed. 144)

GPS News asked when this problem will be corrected.

TCLM replied: “Once an appointment has been made and the contractor is on-site, he will provide the Municipality with a programme with specific time frames to complete the work as identified.”

GRPA: “According to TCLM’s own commentary, “The process of appointing emergency contractors was undertaken over a year ago, but delays were experienced.” TCLM’s commentary is vague and non-committal. At best it is largely unsubstantiated and amounts to feeble spin.”

News DeskSustainable Energy Society

of Southern Africa (SESSA) launched an awareness campaign “Clued-up on solar”.

The initiative aims to raise consumer awareness for choosing credible solar suppliers and installers.

SESSA strongly urges consumers to check the company’s credentials and affiliations such as SESSA membership before making a choice.

In the past months, since Eskom’s crisis culminated in the worst load shedding in history, consumers have been embracing solar PV and solar water heating.

The increased demand for these systems has seen solar companies and installers inundated with enquiries and seen many new companies and individuals appear in this market.

As a result, SESSA has seen a massive increase in consumer complaints about faulty installations and substandard equipment in solar systems.

“The number of complaints has

tripled. Some days my phone doesn’t

stop ringing,” says Deon van Blommestein, SESSA Ombudsman.

“There seem to be several so-called professionals out there, looking to make a quick buck at the expense of the public.”

SESSA stands for good business practices and strives to ensure that the goods and services offered by its members are of the highest quality.

The SESSA Guarantee of Excellence, the Code of Conduct and the ombudsman ensure that SESSA members carry credibility and can offer their customers peace of mind.

The Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA) has been actively promoting the use and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency since 1974.

The inter-disciplinary nature of SESSA attracts the membership of industry, scientists, developers, researchers and the general public.

Pilgrim’s ladies treated to a ghost tour on Woman’s Day

Frieda Paton Friends of Pilgrim’s Rest

Museum treated a group of ladies to a special ghost tour on August 9th for Woman’s Day.

The tour was conducted by Sharon Green, a guide for Brummer Tours, who is a wellspring of information.

The invited guests were mostly local ladies but they were joined by a few visitors from out of town.

Some of the ladies even dressed up in vintage attire for

the occasion. The guests got together at

Alanglade House Museum and enjoyed a warming glass of sherry after an introduction by Green.

Each also received a gift of “Spookasem” kindly donated by Mariette Kruger.

The visit to the graveyard, which is normally part of the ghost tour, was unfortunately cancelled due to rain.

The group did, however,

manage to spend two hours learning about the lifestyle of the original residents of Alanglade.

Also finding out about, admiring and discussing the large collection of precious, and sometimes strange, vintage objects displayed throughout the house.

There were lots of laughs and chattering - as one would expect from a group of women.

Some were particularly keen on the idea that the children were

looked after by a nanny and a governess.

And that the house was designed in such a way that the children were not heard – or seen - in the main portion of the residence.

Nearly everyone took a lot of photographs and videos to try and capture one of the resident ghosts on film.

One visitor’s video clearly showed an orb of light shooting up from the floor.

The Transvaal Gold Mining Estates built Alanglade in 1915 as a mine manager’s residence and several mine managers occupied the house until 1972.

The museum was, however, designed to reflect the opulent Edwardian period when the first residents, the Barry family, lived there.

The furnishings are mostly in the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.

Bookings for the daily guided tours to Alanglade, or ghost tour offered by Brummer Tours, can be made at the Pilgrim’s Rest Information Centre.

Did you know that when you drink during pregnancy your unborn baby gets the same concentration of alcohol in their blood as you do?

Did you know that drinking during pregnancy can damage your unborn child for life?

Have you ever heard of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD)?

Every year, September 9TH is World FASD Awareness Day to draw attention to the risks of drinking alcohol while pregnant.

The ninth day of the ninth month was chosen to remind everyone that women shouldn’t drink alcohol during the nine months of pregnancy.

Studies by the Foundation of Alcohol-Related Research report that South Africa has one of the world’s highest rates of children born with FASD.

It’s as much of a public health problem as HIV/AIDS and yet it receives very little attention.

It’s also 100% preventable.Alcohol damage to the unborn

child can cause a wide range

of disabilities, depending on how much the mother drinks, the stage of pregnancy, and genetics.

Severe damage can cause recognisable physical deformities, and health problems like loss of hearing and vision,

heart and kidney problems, epilepsy, mental retardation and even death.

In many cases, however, children with FASD might appear normal but suffer from permanent brain damage which causes serious learning,

behaviour and social problems throughout their lives.

They might have a weak memory, display immature and extreme impulsive behaviour, and have poor moral judgement.

They’re unable to learn the life skills necessary to fit in with society.

Science has not been able to confirm any safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy.

Avoid drinking, including beer and wine, while you’re pregnant or might be pregnant.

Keep in mind that pregnancy is usually only confirmed when a woman is already 4-6 weeks pregnant and the foetus is the most vulnerable during these early weeks.

If you’re unable to stop drinking get help from your clinic, doctor or organisations such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

You can get more information on FASD on the website of the Foundation of Alcohol-Related Research, which also offers advice and assistance to those with FASD and their families.

Keep your child safe – don’t drink when you’re pregnant

TGME secures Pilgrim’s Caravan ParkFrieda Paton

The Transvaal Gold Mining Company (TGME) has provided 24/7 security at the Pilgrim’s Rest Caravan Park to halt further devastation through vandalism and theft.

This caravan park on the banks of the crystal clear Blyde River, with its huge trees providing shade for the 300 stands, used to be one of the most popular in the country.

It was established in the 1970s after the village was taken over from TGME by the old Transvaal Provincial Administration (TPA) as a heritage site and tourist destination.

Previously managed by Overvaal Resorts, the caravan park came under the administration of the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) in 1994. Hereafter three different businesses managed the caravan park on short leases.

The last one withdrew in 2015 after which the DPWRT allowed this public asset to fall into a state of total disrepair.

Over the past three years the caravan park has been a target of theft and vandalism, much of it attributed to Zama-zamas.

Electrical cables have been unearthed and roof sheeting and other fittings have been removed from the buildings.

Windows have been smashed, as have nearly all the fittings in the ablution blocks.

The cost of bringing the caravan park back into operation will be millions of rands.

“The regular rallies and seasonal visitors to the caravan park were a significant source of income for the businesses in town, and thus also for jobs,” Reinders said.

“My own business alone has lost thousands in turnover every holiday season.

So any development at the caravan park is positive for the town.

We hope that the DPWRT will reach an agreement with someone to take it over very soon.”

TGME has now appointed round-the-clock armed guards, with dogs, to stop any further looting.

The mine is owned by Theta Gold Mines, a listed Australian Mining Company.

They have been involved with planning and development over the past four years and are hoping to resume gold mining in the area by next year.

The nuts & bolts of Nelspruit Fasteners

Michele du Plessis Nelspruit Fasteners has

become a household name in the fastener business in the Lowveld.

“We already have a staff compliment of 14 employees, and we are still growing,” Nelspruit Fasteners co-owner and manager, Ferdi Bijzet said.

“Nelspruit Fasteners belongs to myself and my partner, Peet Nienaber.

Currently, I am managing the business. Nelspruit Fasteners was started in 1985 by Andries Nel and Ernie Frank.

It was then situated in the old Alroe Park Centre in Nelspruit.

In 1988 the shop was moved to 39 Citrus Crescent in Nelspruit, next to the old Game.

In 1999 the current owners bought the business and in December 2015 we moved the business to our new and modern facility in Riverside Nelspruit.

Some of our staff has been with the business for more than 25 years, and our clients became our friends,” Ferdi said.

“Our core business has always been, and will always be the supply of all types and sizes of bolts and nuts and fasteners.

We also supply a wide range of tools and industrial supplies, to make this a one-stop-shop for any workshop and industrial client.

Fasteners, bolts and nuts are our speciality product and we have years of experience in that field,” Ferdi said.

Ferdi confirmed that if they don’t have a product, they bend backwards to source it.

“Through our years of experience, we have a good understanding of the needs of the market, and we carry a large quantity of stock.

However, what we don’t have in stock, we will order.

We have very good relationships with our suppliers, and we bend over backwards to get the goods to our clients as soon as possible.

Our representative also visits our customers regularly.”

You can contact the friendly

people at Nelspruit Fasteners on telephone 013 753289, email [email protected], and their website www.nelspruitfasteners.co.za.

Soos byvoorbeeld: One bird in hand is better than two in the bush.

Ouma? Nee wat, kom ons los dit net

daar.Tog, ek kan nie help om te

smile so by myself as ek aan moontlike titels soos Sipho en die Seekoei of Wilde Willemien gevang in ʼn wip.

Selfs Barbie brei booties klink wild...

Maar nou ja. Ek mag dink wat ek wil maar

ongelukkig kan ek nie altyd skryf wat ek wil nie.

Eendag, lank lank gelede het Wilde Worsie ʼn walvis gevang...

PREVENT WILD FIRES PROVINCIAL NOTICE 45 OF 2019

Local Government Municipal Systems Act (32/2000): Community Fire Safety By-laws for Fire and Rescue Services for the Thaba

Chweu Local Municipality Community Safety By-Laws

“Why would we concentrate on the National Veld and Forest Fire Act?” Andre Scheepers, LEFPA Manager asked. “If you look out of the window, you will see lots of forests and natural vegetation. Sabie is still suffering from the 2007 forest fires.

We need to enforce these bylaws and you are the enforcers.” Twelve Thaba Chweu Local Municipality Bylaw Enforcement Officers attended the training at Tweefontein by the Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association (LEFPA) on the Bylaw Enforcement Guidelines for Act 101 of 1998. Warrant Officer Riaan Nortje, SAPS Disaster Management and John Masina, TCLM Fire and Rescue, were also present at the

training day. LEFPA is an organization with approximately 500 voluntary members covering roughly 880 500 ha within an operational

area of 1 980 000 ha. The operational area includes State land, forestry, agriculture, plots, smallholdings and conservation properties. Over 20 fauna and 25 flora rare and endangered species are protected on the plantations. As one of the largest FPAs in the country, LEFPA deals with all aspects of fire detection, prevention, suppression, rehabilitation and awareness and is a member of the Provincial Umbrella Fire Protection Association (MUFPA –

Mpumalanga Umbrella Fire Protection Association). The Bylaw Enforcement Officers (BEO) received training in Integrated Fire Management Principles. These principles are to ensure landowners are educated about the forest and rural fire prevention and to communicate to landowners & the public regarding veld fire management – educate landowners about forest and rural fire prevention i.e. fuel load

reduction and necessity of fire breaks. Also to assist its members where court cases arise, by providing expert witness, and statistical and weather information.

The fire prohibition states that no burning may occur from June 1st to October 31st, except when a permit was issued. Andre instructed the BEO that all firebreaks must be in place on August 1st and that the strict bylaws and regulations must be enforced. The Act states “That, within the boundaries of the LEFPA and the Ehlanzeni District and parts of

Emakhazeni Local Municipality no person shall from 1 June up to and including 31 October make a fire in the open air, or, if such a fire has been made, allow it to continue to burn or add fuel thereto.”

The exceptions are “a. fires made within a demarcated picnic or camping area or caravan park, or holiday resort, but only at places within such an area which have been specifically prepared and maintained for that purpose; provided that such

fires are properly extinguished with water and/or sand; b. fires for the preparation of food on residential stands; c. fires made on residential and industrial stands in proclaimed townships; d. fires made for initiation school purposes, but only at

places which have been specially prepared and maintained for that purpose to prevent fires from spreading.”The training included clarification on the nine chapters of the Act. It included

training on Fire Danger Rating, Veld fire Prevention through firebreaks, Administration of the Act – Regulations, Delegation and assignment of powers and duties – Offences and penalties, Enforcement of the bylaws and General

and Transitional Provisions. Approved equipment, protective clothing and correct procedures were also covered during the training.

Warrant Officer Nortje explained the correct procedures when enforcing the bylaws, spot fines, accountability and responsibility and the opening of a case

file. The TCLM Bylaw Enforcement Officers will be stationed in Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop. - Article by Michele du Plessis

Michele du PlessisIn January, GPS News featured

an article titled ‘The Demise of a National Monument’.

Huntington Hall was declared a National Monument and Provincial Heritage Site in the Government Gazette No. 10965.

This National Monument is classified as a Grade II site, which means that these sites “are so special that they need to be given a status beyond the protection provided by being entered in the Heritage Register, but are not of outstanding national significance.

They may be rare examples of their kind, or otherwise, be highly representative of a type.”

In the case of Huntington Hall, it seems that this National Monument is in the process of falling apart.

Structural alterations (deemed

temporary by the owner) to the veranda was made, the fireplace situated in the entrance room is damaged, the tiles gone, trees were cut down, light fittings removed (chandeliers) and replaced with neon lights, the wooden pillars on the veranda damaged with graffiti, walls full of graffiti, the hand basin in the only bathroom clogged, to name but a few.

The present state of Huntington Hall defies description. On Thursday, June 27th, Huntington Hall was auctioned by Eli Stroh Property Services, after being duly instructed by Lex-Star Trustees in the matter 23 Glynn Avenue Sabie Property Investments (Pty) Ltd (in liquidation).

“The owner of the property was liquidated during 2018 and the property was put on auction

but no acceptable offers were received.

The Trustees now requested Pam Golding Properties Lydenburg to market the property for sale at R 500 000-00.

As GPS News and Mr. Willie Jacobs expressed their concern about the future of the property and the fact that it was declared a National Monument and Provincial Heritage Site, Pam Golding Properties Lydenburg is of the opinion that the community of Sabie should be made aware of the situation at present,” said Jan van Dyk, Intern Estate Agent, Graskop/Sabie.

Huntington Hall is significant with respect to the history of Sabie.

“The one building on the property of 3, 7805 ha was declared a National Monument

and Provincial Heritage Site (Grade 11 site) on 9 October 1987.

Interested parties should, therefore, make sure that they are aware of what has to be done concerning this building (site),” Jan van Dyk said.

The building was the first brick building in Sabie and it was constructed in the 1890s.

“Although the building is in a bad state it should be saved.

The other buildings on the property were horse stables which were converted into a residential property and a hostel for a school being housed in Huntington Hall until recently.

There is also an office building next to Huntington Hall.

Taking into account that the property is located adjacent to existing township areas of Sabie, the remainder of the property has the potential for residential development.

There is also a cemetery in the north-western corner of the property where there are 18 graves, inter alia the grave of the original owner of the property.

This site should also be restored,” Jan stated.

According to the National Heritage Resources Act of 1999, no person may destroy, damage, disfigure or alter any heritage object.

Also, no person may carry out any work of restoration or repair of a heritage object, listed in Part II of the register of heritage objects, without a permit issued by a duly authorised representative of SAHRA.

When the heritage resources authority responsible for the protection of a heritage site considers that such site has been allowed to fall into disrepair or is neglected to such an extent that it will lose its potential for conservation, the heritage resources authority may serve on the owner an order to repair or maintain such site, to the satisfaction of the heritage resources authority.

Homeowners who buy heritage properties need to consider the fact that they are buying a piece of South African history, and need to make sure that they treat the home with the level of respect it deserves.

Anon E. MouseWords are

fascinating. Take the word

“utopia” for instance. It denotes an

imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.

Dystopia, on the other hand, is defined as an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic.

It is a favourite in literature and movies, and storylines follow at least one or more themes such as environmental destruction, governmental or religious control; an imaginary society that is as “dehumanising and as unpleasant as possible.”

The word that catches the eye, however, is “imaginary”.

Why would something be described as imaginary when there are so many of the

“themes or signs”, as it is described by brilliant writes, philosophers, movie producers and so on already present in our modern societies?

Take environmental destruction as an example.

In the previous GPS News, I read about the Graskop Wastewater Treatment Plant.

That is environmental destruction.

How many species are extinct? That’s environmental

destruction.

What about air pollution in Mpumalanga?

Examples abound, just in our area.

Loss of forests and natural vegetation, desertification, extreme weather conditions etc. etc. etc. Nuclear disasters or ‘accidents’, such as Chernobyl (April 26, 1986) are also a popular theme.

Imaginary? I think not. Fukushima Daiichi Accident

where a major earthquake was followed by a 15-meter tsunami that disabled the power supply and cooling of three nuclear reactors, causing a nuclear ‘accident’ on March 11, 2011.

In novels, it is imaginary; in real life: we are creating an inhabitable world.

Government control is another common theme.

“As a result of government control, the population can experience horrible living conditions, environmental destruction or a loss of the individual.

As a result of government

control, the population will often break out in civil war to counteract the government.” Imaginary or not?

But, then again, I am a paranoid conspiracy nut…

Technological control in dystopia literature includes physically controlling the characters using technology, controlling a city, controlling people’s minds and many other forms.

It is supposed to be imaginary. Really? How far from reality is this theme?

Just take a look around you and decide for yourself.

Survival in a dystopian society is a given.

Are we living or just surviving? The loss of individualism is another scary thought.

Are we losing our individuality and becoming clones?

The passion for fashion and copying others is not a new thing; I call it the Cookie Cutter Syndrome...

So, if you prefer your dystopia to be utopia, just use your imagination.

After all, and I quote Einstein, the true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination…

Frieda PatonAfter more than four years,

locals and visitors can once again fill up in Pilgrim’s Rest at the Highwayman’s Garage after it reopened for business on August 2nd.

The garage was closed down in April 2015 by the previous owners.

Like all the other vacated business premises in Pilgrim’s Rest, it had to wait for the government tender process to run its course.

The tender was awarded to Neville and Juanita Philpott in August 2018.

However, finding a supplier and jumping through the hoops of red-tape took a whole year.

The forecourt shop will be opened later in the year.

Gaspet, the fuel supplier, commented on Facebook that it was an absolute privilege for them to be part of Pilgrim’s Rest.

Besides supplying the fuel, they also fully refurbished the vintage petrol pumps and repainted the outside of the building and the canopies over the pumps.

The news of the reopening was widely welcomed across the country.

Facebook announcements went viral within hours.

Bikers from Nelspruit, filling up on the opening day, were thrilled that they would again be able to return home via Ohrigstad or Lydenburg, rather than turning around after stopping in Pilgrim’s.

The garage was originally started on the premises in 1917 by Tommy Dennison, a well-known character in the village.

In 1912, Dennison was overburdened with mounting debts and decided that robbing the mail coach on the pass between Pilgrim’s Rest and Lydenburg would be a great way to pay them off.

After all, the masked highwaymen after whom the Robber’s Pass was named got away with around £10 000 worth of gold bullion in 1899.

Unfortunately for Dennison, his robbery did not pay off as expected.

There was no gold on the coach, but only a box of silver half-crowns.

He was caught while trying to use these coins to settle his debts at the Royal Hotel Bar.

After serving a 5-year jail sentence Dennison returned to Pilgrim’s Rest and opened the garage - appropriately naming it the Highwayman’s Garage.

CANSA supports the National Department of Health’s efforts to prioritise awareness of breast and cervical cancer and to educate women with the knowledge of symptoms, screening opportunities and lowering cancer risk.

This August, in line with our 365 Day Health Challenge, women are encouraged to exercise their right to cancer screening and to proactively share that they’ve been screened on every available platform, including social media, encouraging and challenging other women to get screened.Breast Cancer Screening

Women who have no symptoms of breast cancer should request an annual Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) when visiting primary health care centres as it’s their right, as per the National Department of Health Breast Cancer Control Policy.

CANSA also offers CBE’s at our CANSA Care Centres.

CANSA advocates a mammogram every year for all women from age 40 to 54 for purposes of non-symptomatic breast screening (women 55 years and older, should have a mammogram every two years – or if they choose, continue with an annual mammogram).

Public Hospital Breast Clinics or the Radiological Society of SA (RSSA) on 011-794 4395 www.rssa.co.za can be contacted to arrange for a mammogram.Cervical Cancer Screening

Most cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), making it one of the most preventable cancers when the HPV vaccination is implemented appropriately.

The vaccination is safe and most effective when given at an early age (9 years and older) or before sexual debut.

In SA the HPV vaccination was approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority in February 2008 for its efficiency.

HIV infected women are at an increased risk for HPV infection at an earlier age (13-18 years).

All women should go for Pap smears at least every three years, from the age of 25, to detect abnormal cells early.

However, women are entitled to and can request a screening at a younger age.

CANSA provides Pap smear screening at CANSA Care Centres around the country.
