Our Staff
In 1879 REINTJES GmbH was found-ed by Theodor Reintjes in Emmerich on the Rhine and taken over by his son Eugen Reintjes in 1912.
Having started with only a few em-ployees back then, we had a staff of 406 employees and 24 trainees at our headquarters in 2013. All in all, more than 500 employees (including trainees), who are the heart of our company, worked in the REINTJES group in 2013.
Last but not least, the success of REINTJES is the result of the per-formance and know-how of the entire staff. To ensure that this will go on, REINTJES continually invests in training and further education as well as in an extensive occupa-tional health management.

For more than 80 years REINTJES has supplied marine propulsion systems to cus tomers all over the world. More than 90,000 units have left the plant meanwhile. In 2013 the company achieved a turnover of € 87 million.
REINTJES in Figures
We are responding to the expected economic development by further expanding our presence in the market and using the growth potential of our new products like hybrid drives and pod drives as well as in non-maritime applications such as high-speed gearboxes for steam turbines for energy generation.

Research and Development
Research and development activities at the headquarters in Hamelin form the basis for our competitiveness as a specialist in marine propulsion technology and, hence, are an es-sential requirement.
The strength of our development department are our engineers whose on-going further training and qualification is a matter of course for us. They contribute their knowledge and show a high sense of responsi bility and commitment when working in the teams that are faced with ever changing tasks. Besides further development of our standard products, these tasks include drawing up concepts for new, strategic product ideas. At our own testing area new deve l -op ments are tested, analysed and assessed, from the component to the product as a whole, prior to their market launch.
As a medium-sized enterprise, we participate in fundamental re search as well as in joint appli cation-oriented, pre-competition research undertaken by the Research As-sociation Power Transmission Engineering (FVA) of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). When developing new products, the development department ana-lyses engineering questions in co-operation with university institutes and research centres.
We have close contacts with tech nical universities, namely TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Hamburg-Harburg, Leib-nitz Universität Hannover, TU Clausthal, TU Chemnitz as well as TU Kaiserslautern and TU Dresden.
Modern, powerful computer pro-grammes support the development and design processes of our products.
Shaping the Future
12
Besides the calculation tools pro-vided by the Research Association Power Transmission Engineering (FVA), we use programmes develo-ped by ourselves. Moreover, we use the finite element system by ANSYS to solve structural and mechanical problems. The CFD system assists us with hydrodynamics computations. Our design work is based on the 3D CAD system UG-NX.
13
Since 1929 we have been specialists in the manufacture of marine gear-boxes, in particular for work boats, fast vessels and fast ferries. We offer you a free choice of components and guarantee a well-engineered propul-sion solution.
In 2010 we became a system provi-der and rounded off our traditional portfolio with sophisticated pod and hybrid systems as well as dredging and step up gearboxes.
For industrial use we offer turbo gearboxes for steam turbines.
The continuous development of our expertise and the ongoing expan-sion of our range of products and services enable us to implement the individual and ambitious wishes of our customers.

Applications for Heavy Gearboxes
REINTJES gearboxes of the WAF/LAF, SVA/SVAL and DLG series have been specially designed for heavy- duty applications in work boats such as tugs, trawlers, inland waterway vessels, ferries, tankers, offshore vessels, container vessels and special-purpose ships with comparably high demands. Their outstanding features are optimal efficiency, high reliability and a long service life.
Gearboxes of the WAF/LAF series are available for output ranges from 250 to 8,500 kW; VA, SVA and SVAL gearboxes from 3,000 to 20,000 kW.
The twin input/single output re- duction gearboxes of the DLG series come with a power range from 1,400 to 30,000 kW.
Marine Gearboxes
18
19
REINTJES gearboxes of type WVS/WLS and VLJ convince by low weight due to weight-optimised design and optimal running characteristics. These factors make the hydraulically operated gearboxes the ideal pro-pulsion unit whether for fixed-pitch pro pellers or waterjets.
WVS/WLS gearboxes have been specially designed for application in fast naval craft, yachts and other
ships with comparably high de-mands in the output range from 350 to 5,000 kW.
REINTJES gearboxes of the VLJ series have been specially developed for fast ferries and other vessels with comparably high demands. They are available for output ranges from 600 to 13,200 kW.

The FORTJES® propulsion system was specially developed for use in yachts with engine ratings from 300 to 3,000 kW and offers optimal hy-drodynamic properties.
Its outstanding manoeuvrability and space-saving design are further highlights of the pod drive system developed by REINTJES.
Pod Systems
System Solutions
The counter rotating propellers (CRP) push/pull system with rigid asymmetrical strut can be used for all yacht designs (from 300 to 3,000 kW). Moreover it offers a free selec-tion of engines and control systems.
Of course Power Take Off (PTO) and Power Take In (PTI) solutions can be realised.
22
23
Ever increasing environmental restrictions like manoeuvring op-erations in the harbour or in green areas with reduced or without emissions require an alternative drive solution.
REINTJES hybrid systems are ideal for slow-speed operation and en-hance the efficiency of your ship’s propulsion system as they allow for riding at a slow speed below the main engine idle speed.
The electric drive is aimed at achie-ving smooth run ning, less noise
Hybrid Systems
and low energy consumption and will gain still more importance.
The hybrid systems are suitable for fixed pitch propeller applications and available for electric motors from 60 kW up to 100 kW and for diesel engines up to 1,200 kW.
The complete package comprises the gearbox and a com bined elec-tric motor and ge nerator as well as a frequency converter in a one hand solution.

The implementation of our corpo-rate vision to open up new business fields also in non-maritime markets resulted in the development of our new RTG series of high-speed gear-boxes.
They are used in stationary indus-trial applications for decentralised energy generation.
Our decades-long know-how in the manufacture of gearboxes for the maritime market and our high quality standards are ideal prere-quisites for the success of REINTJES high-speed gearboxes for steam turbines.
High Speed Gearboxes for Steam Turbines
For many years we have been suc-cessfully manufacturing wheel sets featuring a particularly high degree of precision for a renowned manuf-acturer of high-speed gearboxes. Gearboxes of the RTG 560 – 800 se-ries are available for power ranges between 1,400 kW and 30,000 kW, further ratings on request.

REINTJES service is provided as individually as gearboxes are being developed. Experts create customised concepts which are precisely tailored to the wishes of ship owners, ship operators and charterers. The engineering ser-vices range from failure and risk management via improvement suggestions to adapted designs.
In the rare event of a marine gear-box failure customers just need to call the REINTJES service and a specialist will arrive on site wi-thin 24 hours – no matter in which harbour of the world the ship is staying.
Customers who call the REINTJES hotline will always be connected to a competent service employee, who will give advice and support – around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Hardening Plant
In order to ensure that heavy-duty propulsion elements such as shafts, wheels and clutch housings can reliably cope with challenging demands, they are case hardened in our in-house hardening shop.
Our experienced staff, a professional process control system and modern equipment always ensure optimal results.
Different treatment methods, e.g. case hardening, carburising, gas nitriding, degreasing, tempering and annealing, are available at our heat treatment centre.
To meet the demands of different classification societies, the entire heat treatment process is subject to quality control and assurance.
