From the Head of Junior School

Dear Parents I hope all boys and families enjoyed the Easter school holiday, spending time together and living life at a somewhat slower pace. As a school community, we welcome one new student and one returning student to the Junior School. Matthew Johnston (5S) commenced his schooling with us this week and William Sanderson (1E) returns to our School. I extend a very warm welcome to both boys and their families and wish them a long and happy association with Toowoomba Grammar School. Parenting A story occurred across the final week of first term that I would describe as one of the saddest times in Australian cricket in my lifetime. Watching events unfold during the third cricket test between Australia and South Africa was, I suspect, difficult for most adults and children. I made mention of these events to the boys at a morning assembly at the end of term, with the simple comment that you should always play sport by the rules. A quiet moment of parenting occurred during Steve Smith’s media conference upon his return to Australia. During this most difficult time, his father, Peter Smith, stood near him and at one traumatic moment, gently placed his hand on the former Australian Cricket Captain’s shoulder, his 28 year old son’s shoulder. In an immensely emotional time, a moment of parenting occurred that we can all take something from; being there when our children need us most. Staffing Some changes occurred towards the end of last term with After School Care staffing. The Co-ordinator, Miss Bonnie Ryan, resigned due to a move away from Toowoomba. Aiden Waterson, After School Care Assistant, also concluded his time at our school. I thank Bonnie and Aiden for their work with the boys in After School Care. Miss Rhiannon Newman has been appointed as the new Camp Australia Co-ordinator for our School’s service. I welcome Miss Newman to our School. At this stage, a new, regular assistant has yet to be appointed. Science Room During first term, the classroom closest to the library was redesigned as a Science Room. Mrs Amelia Grills, one of our class teachers, was appointed as the Junior School Science Co-ordinator and has been instrumental in setting up this new space, ably supported by one of our teacher aides, Mrs Karen Newton. Classes will commence using this room this term, which is primarily designed for hands-on science lessons. I thank Mrs Grills for the work she has undertaken and look forward to the boys benefitting from this new facility.

Junior School Marketing Recently, some new Junior School marketing material has been produced, focusing on the many opportunities available to the boys. One part of this strategy includes a double-sided DL flier, which is one third the size of an A4 piece of paper. The information on this flier is featured in this newsletter following my article. I am seeking support from parents who may be willing and able to display some of these brochures in their businesses or offices. If you are happy to assist with this matter can you please click or tap on the link to Mrs Karen Miller’s email address and reply? Mrs Miller will then provide you with some of these brochures. (Mrs Karen Miller, Head of Junior School’s Secretary [email protected]) ANZAC Day Service The School’s ANZAC Day service will be held next week, on Tuesday 24 April. All boys from Year 3 to Year 12 will attend this service, which will be held on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval, commencing at 9.00am. This will remain as a ‘Blues’ uniform day for all Junior School boys. Our Junior School ANZAC memorial will occur in the playground before school on the same day. Mrs Jess Galbraith, Prep to Year 3 Co-ordinator, has sent home further correspondence regarding this event. I encourage parents and boys to visit our memorial on Tuesday morning and be part of this special event. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Winter Uniform The boys are required to wear winter uniform in Terms 2 and 3. The Term 2 uniform change is predominately the trousers. The long sleeve shirt is not a compulsory item. When the weather is colder, your son must wear the school jumper as the first item of selection. If he needs more warm clothing, a navy blue or black t-shirt may be worn under the school shirt and he may also wear his vest under the school jumper. The school rain jacket is the last item to be used to keep warm. Prep Sports shorts, short or long sleeve Prep shirt and tracksuit. Years 1 – 3 Long blue trousers, short or long sleeve blue shirt and soft broad brim hat. Years 4 – 6 Long blue trousers, short or long sleeve blue shirt and Akubra. Friday is sports day. All boys wear Golds on this day. Golds include the school sport shirt, sport shorts, white TGS socks and predominately white sneakers. The TGS tracksuit may be worn if your son is cold. If your son runs out of white TGS socks, plain white shin high socks (crewe length) may be worn. Anklets or no socks are not acceptable. Hats The following rules apply to Junior School boys: Blues / Blazer Uniform Prep to 3 - sports hat (broad brimmed/soft) Years 4 to 6 - Akubra Golds / Sport Prep to 3 - sports hat (broad brimmed/soft) Years 4 to 6 - bucket hat All boys should have the correct hat(s) and maintain them in good condition. Further to this, boys who do not have hats will not be permitted to play, in keeping with our Sun Smart policy (no hat, no play). These boys will be required to sit in a designated shaded area. Blazer Uniform All boys from Year 1 to Year 6 are expected to wear Blazer Uniform every Thursday during Terms 2 and 3. This information features in the Student Diary as well as on the School App. Please note that Junior School references are to Blazer Uniform and Senior School references are to Blazer Dress. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From Head of Teaching and Learning

Welcome back to school and a very busy Term 2. This term our boys will be involved in the ICAS Science Competition, the annual Writing Competition and for some of our older students, involvement in maths competitions. ICAS Science Competition For more than 30 years, Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) has developed a suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students. The tests provide information about what students can and can’t do at a point in time and track learning as students’ progress from year to year. The assessments which our boys will be completing are Science, English, Mathematics and Digital Technologies. The Science assessment will be held on 29 May.

Writing Competition Over the next few weeks, the boys will be preparing for the writing competition which commences on 21 May. Every boy will participate and earn points for his House. The boys will have three weeks to complete their writing in class. It is important to note that all writing will take place at school and that external judges will select the winning entries. The following prizes will be awarded at the Academic Awards Assembly in Week Two of Term 3: First place from each class will receive a trophy. Second and third place from each class will receive a medallion. Three Highly Commended certificates will be awarded in each class. Maths Competitions Year 6 students and selected Year 5 and Year 4 students will be involved in the Maths Olympiad, Maths Games program and The Mathematics Team Challenge this term. The Maths Olympiad is a competition for students and is aimed at challenging their maths problem solving abilities. The first competition date is 23 May. The Maths Games are designed to provide Year 5 and Year 6 students with an opportunity to learn and develop valuable maths problem solving skills. The Maths Games focus on encouraging students to challenge themselves and develop their own abilities whilst working with teachers and fellow students to enhance their skills in this area. The first competition date is 23 May. The Mathematics Team Challenge will be held on 8 May and we have nominated three teams comprising students from Years 4, 5 and 6. The competition involves a team event and a relay. The teams have 45 minutes to complete a series of problems in the team event and 60 minutes to complete 20 questions in a relay situation. The boys will certainly be challenged to think creatively, critically and quickly this term. I look forward to letting you know how our students performed in these activities. Jan Heffernan Head of Teaching and Learning

Allergies It is timely to remind parents that several boys have an allergy to peanuts or nuts in general. Should they ingest or come into contact with peanuts or food items containing peanuts the boys will suffer a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. It is not unusual for schools to have children enrolled with such allergies. I respectfully request that parents refrain from sending their sons to school with peanut butter sandwiches or peanut based products. Additionally, boys are not to share their food with each other at school.
