EASTER AS DEATH OF SELF-LOVE

The greater the favour that is done to us, the more fiercely we resent it if it does not break us down a n d m a k e u s grateful..The effect of Christs death upon human nature .is not always grat i tude. Unless i t is received in the Holy Ghost, t h e e f f e c t m a y j u s t be.judgmenta death unto death (Forsyth 1957a)

Today we use the word defensive a great deal. We tend to be judgmental about pe rsons who become defensive; it is a tacit admission of weakness and guilt. Our legal system seems to encourage people never to say, It was my fault, or I was guilty. We are encouraged to find extenuating circumstances. We seem to be in a human conspiracy to protect one another from the shame of saying, I am to blame. Who wants to be a wimp?This defensive system has levels, or degrees of crisis.

At the top is the experience of being forgiven before we are accused. G.B. Shaw is reputed to have said, I dont want anyone to die for me. I can manage, we say. Ironically, if we do m a n a g e , c o n t i n u e t o stonewall, yet are found g u i l t y, w e h a v e o n l y demonstrated that we can survive in prison.Jesus came to set us free from the exhaustion of defending ourselves. He came to set us free to be what God had in mind when he created us.Such a huge gift is very expensive. To receive such a pardon means accepting also his claim on us. He not only came to give us good things, he died to save us from having to save ourselves.His love kills our s e l f - l o v e a n d creates a love for him that in turn sets us free, and gives u s s e l f - r e s p e c t . Conversion is dying with Christ to our pride and self-

protection system, and living to and with Him as ruler and redeemer.Our resurrected Lord, strengthen us so we dare to confess our wrongdoings and to trust only in your merc i fu l , sav ing , l i fe -restoring love. Blessed Easter!On a personal note, I will be leaving for India on 07 April. I enjoyed my l i fe and ministry in Perth. Thanks a lot for accepting as I am a n d f o r g i v i n g m y shortcomings. God loves you all so much, and so do I. Please pray for our new vicar Rev. Biju George. I am confident that achens
