Introduction

1 Introduction1.1 Decentralized installation

Concepts for decentralized installation in mechanical and system engineering describethe strict modular design with functional sections that are assembled and wired readyfor operation.

These machine modules can then be combined on site and taken into operation withina short period of time to form a system according to specific application requirements.

Such a machine module could consist of:

• mechanical equipment

• geared motor with power electronics as drive unit

• standardized communications interface for drive and sensors

• installation interfaces (preferrably pluggable)

• sensors and actuators

1.2 Characteristics of decentralized installation

• Reducing project planning and startup time through:

– drive components from a modular system– project-specific combination of components– plain structured installation and control plans– fewer cables and less routing resulting in reduced installation efforts– use of pre-configured control software– individual startup of module sections

• High operational reliability and simple maintenance through:
