We express our gratitude to all who so generously support the life and work of CITI, and we would ask that you continue to pray for all of those whose names are included elsewhere in this newsletter. Diocesan Directors of Ordinands help people to discover their gifts and use them in the Church.

Ordained ministry is one way of using our gifts within the overall mission of the Church.

The DDOs have different ways of supporting those who are asking the question “Am I called to ordination?” They will facilitate opportunities to help you discover the answer to that question and will connect you with others also exploring ordination.

For a full list of DDOs and their contact details see page 2.

Like every other strand of church and society the life of the Theological Institute has been deeply impacted by the ongoing global pandemic. From mid-March all teaching for the remainder of last year was moved to a blend of

online ‘live’ classrooms and pre-recorded materials. The premises in Braemor Park have been re-ordered and the new academic year has been planned in accordance with all statutory and ecclesial guidelines. With additional restrictions having taken effect in Dublin since late September, the intention (which is permitted by TCD) is

to prioritise ‘in-person’ delivery for formational elements of training and to supplement this with online learning for other modules. In the face of the many challenges posed by this constantly shifting context for training, the resilience and commitment of both staff and students has proved a real encouragement.

One of the most significant developments within CITI over the last couple of years has been the realisation of an entirely new programme which, like the MTh, will be delivered in partnership with the University of Dublin. The ‘Certificate in Christian Theology and Practice’ is a Level 7 award which, from 2021, will serve as the pre-selection Foundation Course. The course will cover six subjects – ‘Old Testament’, ‘New Testament’, ‘Theology’, ‘Creeds’, ‘Liturgy’ and ‘Critical Thinking’. Depending on final numbers and the nature of the restrictions that may be in place at the point of commencement in January, the hope is that the course can be opened to those interested in adult faith formation. Supplemented by certain other aspects of necessary study and local practical training, it has also been agreed that the Certificate can serve as the primary pathway for Diocesan Readers (in these latter two cases the ‘Critical Thinking’ module will be replaced by a course in ‘Spirituality and Self-understanding’.)

A further initiative under CITI’s remit to oversee Continuing Ministerial Education is the aspiration to develop a network of ‘pastor theologians’, a group of those rooted in parochial ministry but who remain committed to further academic research and study. It is our cherished hope that over time this can become a vital resource within the intellectual sphere of church life.

We express our gratitude to all who so generously support the life and work of CITI, and we would ask that you continue to pray for all of those whose names are included elsewhere in this newsletter.
