The Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences is published quarterly in March, June, September and December by Tokyo

Medical and Dental University, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8510, Japan. The Journal publishes authoritative, peer reviewed

articles relevant to the medical and dental sciences. Manuscripts will appear under one of the following sections: original

articles, reviews, others. Review articles are usually invited, but submitted reviews will be considered. Authors are

requested to follow “Manuscript Submission Guidelines” which is available for download from “http://lib.tmd.ac.jp/jmd/

index.html”

1. QualificationsforSubmission:Tobeeligibletosubmitmanuscripts,thefirstauthorshouldbe:1)FacultyandstaffofTokyoMedicalandDentalUniversity;2)CurrentstudentofTokyoMedicalandDentalUniversitywhohasbeenrecommendedbyhis/herprofessor;

3)Non-Faculty,non-staffornon-currentstudentofTokyoMedicalandDentalUniversitywhohasreceivedapprovalfromtheBoardpriortomanuscriptsubmission;

4)ApersonwhohasbeeninvitedbytheBoardtosubmitamanuscript.Apersonwhowishes to contribute amanuscript to the JournalofMedicalandDentalSciencesshouldsubmitthemanuscripttotheEditor-in-Chief,AdministrationOfficeoftheUniversityLibrary,TokyoMedicalandDentalUniversity,1-5-45,Yushima,Bunkyo-ku,Tokyo113-8510,Japan.

2. Thefollowingtypesofpaperswillbeconsideredforpublication:originalarticles, reviews,mini reviews, shortcommunications,case reports,technicalinnovationsandstatisticalinvestigations.

3. Authorsshouldconfirminwriting that the researchcontained in themanuscripthasnotbeenpublished,or themanuscript isnotunderconsiderationelsewhere.

4. TheJournalofMedicalandDentalSciences ispublishedquarterly inMarch,June,SeptemberandDecember.

5. Authorsmustsubmit”ApplicationFormforSubmission”,“PersonalHistory”,“CheckList”and“CopyrightTransferAgreement”with themanuscript.TheseformscanbefoundontheTokyoMedicalandDentalUniversitywebsite.

6. Manuscriptswillbereviewedbythreeormoreprofessionals,whoaremembersoftheBoardorhavebeenrequestedbytheBoardtoserveasguestreviewers.ReviewersmaycomefromeitherwithinoroutsidetheUniversity.

7. Acceptabilitywillbedeterminedby theBoardandwillbasicallybereportedinorderofapplication.

8. ManuscriptsshouldbewritteninEnglish.9. ThemanuscriptshouldbesubmittedonA4paperandmustcomprise

onetypewrittenoriginalandfouradditionalcopies(figuresshouldbeoriginals).Afterfinalacceptance,anelectronicmanuscript(floppydisk,MD,CD,orothermedia)shouldbesubmitted.Disksshouldbelabeledwithinformationonthecomputermodel,nameofsoftware,manuscripttitle,andthenameandaffiliationofthefirstauthor.

10. Pagesmustbedouble-spacedandcontainapproximately20lines;onelineshouldcontainapproximately65letters.Eachpageshouldhavewidemarginsonbothsides.Pagesshouldbenumberedconsecutively.

11. Thelengthofthemanuscriptshouldbewithin20pages,includingtables,figures,andimages.

12. Themanuscript should consist of a title page, an abstract, text,acknowledgments,references,andlegendsforfiguresandtables.1)The first page of themanuscriptmust include the followinginformation:

13. Scientificnamesofbacteria,animalsandplantsshouldbewritten initalics,andthefirstlettershouldbecapitalized.[ex.]Bacillusenteritidis,Trombiculapallida

14. Thenamesofmedicineshouldbepresentedaschemicalorgenerictermswritteninlowercase.Whenacommercialnameisused,thefirstlettershouldbecapitalized.[ex.]cyclophosphamide,Endoxan

15. Studiesusinghumansubjectsrequireapprovalfromtheethicsreviewcommitteeoftheinstitutionandinformedconsentfromeachparticipant.Authorsmustclearlystatethatthesehavebeenobtained.

16. Whenreportingexperimentsonanimals,authorsmustclearlystatethat

approvalhasbeenobtainedfromtheinstitutionalanimalcareandusecommittee.

17. ConflictsofinterestIfdirectorindirectfinancialsupportwasreceivedfromanycompanyinconductingtheresearchorcreatingdocuments,thesourceandnatureofthesupportmustbedescribedintheAcknowledgmentssection.

18. Eachtimeareferenceiscitedinthetext,thecitationnumbershouldbetypedinthetextasasuperscriptnumber.

19. Referencesshouldbepresentedasfollows:1)Referencesshouldbearrangedinnumericalorderaccordingto thesequenceofpresentation in the text and listeddouble-spacedonseparatesheets.

2)Iftherearemorethanfourauthorsofamanuscript,listthefirstthreenamesfollowedbyetal.

3)Journalabbreviationsshould follow the format reported in IndexMedicus.

4)ReferencestoarticleswritteninJapaneseshouldspecifywhetheranEnglishabstractisavailable.

5)ReferencescitedfromtheInternetareasfollows:(1)Web-only journal (published inelectronic formonly)maybe

citedinthereferences.(2)Inprinciple,Websitesshouldnotbe included in the reference

list.However,ifuseofsuchmaterialsisdeemednecessary,thesesourcesmaybe listed in the textora footnoteapart from thereferencelist,andtheauthorsarerequiredtoprovidealetterthatexplainswhytheymustciteaWebsiteintheirmanuscript.

6)Referencing system isbasedon theVancouver style,with someminormodifications.Pleasereferto“SampleReferences,”whichareavailableintheAdministrationOfficeoftheUniversityLibrary.

20. UnitsshouldbeexpressedinaccordancewithSI(SystemeInternationale).Ex: Length nm,μm,mm,m,km,etc.

Mass pg,ng,μg,mg,g,kg,etc. Molecule weightmol,etc. Volume mm3,m3,μl,ml,l,etc. Concentration mg/l,g/l,etc. Temperature °C,K,etc. Time μs,ms,s,min,h,etc.21. Tablesshouldbepresentedasfollows:

1)Tables should be arranged in numerical order according to thepresentationinthetext(ex.TableⅠ ,TableⅡ ).Eachtableshouldbepresentedonaseparatesheetwith theexplanationandauthors'nameswrittenonthereverseside.

2)Thesiteswheretablesaretobeinsertedinthetextshouldbeindicatedinthemargin.

22. Figuresshouldbepresentedasfollows:1)Figures shouldbe arranged innumericalorder according to thepresentation in the text (ex.Fig1,Fig2).Each figure shouldbepresentedonaseparatesheetwiththeexplanationandauthor'snamewrittenonthereverseside.

2)Photomicrographsshouldbesubmittedwithbarscalesasappropriate.3)Figurelegendsshouldbetypeddouble-spacedonaseparatesheet.4)The siteswhere figures are tobe inserted in the text shouldbeindicatedinthemargin.

5)Theauthorortheinstitutemustpaythecostforcolorprinting.23. Figuresandtablesshouldbesizedinconsiderationofthethreepossible

sizesforprinting,8.5cm,11.5cm,and17.5cm.24. Ifrevisionsarerequired,revisedmanuscriptsshouldbesubmittedwithin

threemonthsfromthedateof thecommitteemeeting.Otherwise therevisedmanuscriptwillbeconsideredasanewlysubmittedmanuscript.Notificationofthedeadlineforresubmissionwillaccompanytherequestforrevisions.

25. Authorswillusuallybeaskedtoproofreadtheirarticlesonlyonce.26. Papersnolongerthansixprintedpageswillbepublishedwithoutpage

charges.Chargesforadditionalpageswillbequotedonrequest fromthe authoror institute.Additionalpage chargeswill not appliedtomanuscriptsrequestedbytheBoard.
