Meetings Africa 2012 a smash hit
SHATTERING formal meetingsand attendance records,Meetings Africa 2012 whichclosed last night, has been hailedas an undoubted success for theSouth African travel and businesstourism industry. South Africa’s premier businesstourism exhibition, held from 6-8March in the Sandton ConventionCentre in Johannesburg, reportSthat overall attendance (at 3452)was 20% up on 2011 (2637), withregistered international visitornumbers nearly doubling from106 in 2011 to 205 in 2012 (up93%). A major success is the 8906Meetings that were requestedduring the three-day showthrough a match-makingelectronic diary system, givingreal substance to the show’susefulness as a business-enablingand revenue-generatingenvironment. Notable too was a heightenedinterest from emerging markets,with a lively BRIC panel discussionon the potential and interest inSouth Africa from China, India,Brazil and Russia. There were 68% more foreignjournalists this year (37 in 2012
compared to 22 in 2011). ”There is no doubt looking atthe numbers that this has beenthe most successful MeetingsAfrica show yet,” said SouthAfrican Tourism chief executiveofficer, Thulani Nzima. “It shows that there is keeninterest in destination SouthAfrica and bodes extremely wellfor our plans to grow businesstourist arrivals, entrench ourstatus as Africa’s leading businesstourism destination and increaseour share OF the global businesstourism market.” James Costello, a hosted buyerfrom Atlanta in the United Stateswas visiting South Africa for thefirst time. “It’s chin-droppingly beautiful,”he said, “and every single one ofmy expectations has beenexceeded.”

NEW South Wales Minister forTourism and Major Events,George Souris, has announcedthe injection of $211 million from59 business events into the stateeconomy. The booster shot, said to takeplace in Sydney between nowand the end of the year will thismonth alone see $40 million ineconomic value with nineinternational business eventstaking place in Sydney. “About half of all businesstravellers to Australia come toNSW according to TourismResearch Australia (TRA),” he said. “The NSW Government has seta target to double visitorexpenditure by 2020 and ahealthy business events sectorwill play a key role in helping us
to achieve this. “The much needed SydneyInternational Convention,Exhibition and EntertainmentPrecinct will provide a catalyst fora new level of collaborationfocused on bringing newbusiness, new people and newideas to Australia’s number onebusiness events destination,”Souris added.
