A Message From Our President
Lansing Chapter Members,
This Thursday please plan to join us for the CAE panel discussion at Jackson
National Life Insurance Company! There are already over 30 registered to attend
and lots of good questions have been submitted to be discussed. We will also be
holding our annual meeting before hand, to briefly vote on the proposed Bylaw
addendum, Co-Vice President position and Board Member positions. You won’t
want to miss out so please register today!
The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) supports efforts to raise awareness of the
internal audit profession and its value. The aim is not only to dispel misperceptions
of the profession, but to enhance the business community’s knowledge of the
essential role internal auditing plays in strong organizational governance, internal
control, and effective risk management. When management and boards of directors
come to fully appreciate the value of internal auditing, they ensure the internal
audit activity is adequately sourced and effectively utilized. Similarly, as the general
public becomes more familiar with what internal auditors do, the number of
individuals who consider it a viable career option rises, fueling the profession with
greater talent.
As an internal audit professional, you play an important role in raising awareness
and elevating the profession. Whether you are actively involved in your local
chapter, new to the field, part of an extensive audit team, or the sole practitioner at
your organization, there’s something you can do to elevate the profession. Every
day you can do more to be a better advocate for the Internal Audit profession.
Happy Spring,
Emily

Nominations
Voting will take place at the March 17
breakfast meeting for leadership vacancies.
Here are the nominees:
Andrew Tracy / Internal Auditor, Group-wide Internal Audit at Jackson National Life Insurance—Vice President
I believe our Chapter provides unique op-portunities for professional develop-ment. Networking with other internal audit departments in the capital area, planning and organizing quarterly educational meet-ings and chapter events, and connecting with internal audit students at MSU are all activities that encourage professional growth. I hope this leadership position will help me develop my knowledge and under-standing of internal audit. Communicating with other professionals and discussing cur-rent movements within our field would be a valuable asset to my career. In turn, one of my goals as the Vice President would be to grow this IIA chapter by strengthening its current relationships and helping to build new ones. I am interested in helping this chapter support internal auditors and other business professionals in our area. I thank you for considering me for this leadership opportunity.
Carly Tran (Slater)| Lead Auditor, Group-wide Internal Audit at Jackson National Life Insurance—Board Member
I am interested in the Board position to de-velop connections with internal auditors in the area, as well as develop my own person-al growth in the profession. Previous to joining the Internal Audit department, I was part of the management team in Jack-son Operations where I assisted with prod-uct implementations and managed New Business processing functions. The IIA has played a key role in my transition to inter-nal auditing and I would be honored to be able to support other internal auditors in the profession.
Kathryn J. Krause, CFE, CIA, CISA, CRMA / Information Systems Control Analyst at Board of Water and Light –Board Member
I am interested in becoming a board member of the Lansing Chapter of the IIA in order to assist the chapter with support-ing internal auditors and other business professionals in mid-Michigan. I have been a Certified Internal Auditor for 27 years, in a diversity of industries, and have previously assisted the chapter for 5 years as the Audit Committee Chair. I look forward to strengthening current relationships and building new ones.

Corporate Culture Matters: Assessing if a Candidate Has the Right Personality for Your Team
With the limited number of skilled accountants on the job market, many managers know all too well the difficulty of finding candidates with the right mix of skills and experience needed for filling open positions. One criteria you’ll want to be certain to examine when making a hiring decision is a candidate’s fit with your corporate culture. New employees who lack a few technical skills can be trained. It’s much harder, however, to teach them how to fit in with their new colleagues and office environment. Bad hires not only cost your organization time and money, they can also bring down employee morale and productivity.
As you evaluate candidates, one of the many things you should look for is whether they’ll fit in with your corporate culture and thrive as full-time employees. Here are four tips for finding the right personality type for your team.
1. Ask the right questions. There are the standard questions: “Why do you want to work here?” and “Tell me about yourself.” Those aren’t bad, but you need more information. Asking more targeted questions will give you a glimpse into a candidate’s work behavior such as how they relate to coworkers and react under pressure, and whether they have the determination and professional demeanor to thrive in your company culture.
As an example, you could ask, “Why did you leave your last employer?” If they start badmouthing their boss or col-leagues, it may be a sign that they’re not good at collaborating or resolving petty workplace conflicts and might not be a good fit with your corporate culture. Here are a few other interview questions that dig deeper:
What did you like best/least about your previous position? Tell me about a time when you disagreed with a colleague’s approach to a problem. How did you handle the
situation? If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? Why? Describe an instance in which you had to think on your feet. Were you satisfied with the result? What aspects of our company’s corporate culture do you find attractive? What qualities do you prize in coworkers, and why? 2. Check references. This is an important step some managers skip in their eagerness to land skilled fi-nance professionals quickly, especially when they look great on paper and impress you with their interview an-swers. But disregard reference checks at your own risk. Unlike a resume or interview, references give you independ-ent and objective insights into a candidate’s honesty, work ethic and interpersonal skills. Before you make the job offer, do your company and staff the favor of making a few phone calls to verify that what you see is what you’ll ac-tually get.
3. Mix and mingle with candidates. To better gauge a potential new hire’s personality and fit with your corporate culture, consider meeting outside the office with a few of your team members. Informal settings such as industry mixers and casual gatherings are ideal opportunities to evaluate candidates when they’re not “performing” in the spotlight. It’ll also give your team the opportunity to chime in on your decision. After the gathering, ask one or two team members whether they think the candidate will work well in your corporate culture.
4. Conduct a “working interview.” Sometimes the decision will warrant a longer evaluation. In fact, 34 per-cent of chief financial officers who responded to a recent Robert Half survey said they gained the greatest insight into a candidate’s corporate culture fit by having them work on a temporary basis initially. A temp-to-hire strategy allows you to observe a candidate’s workplace fit in real time and is less risky than bringing on a full-time finance worker after only a few interactions in a somewhat artificial environment.
To get the most out of this approach, give these provisional employees challenging assignments so you can see whether they can keep up with the team. Be sure to treat them as you would any full-time worker so they’re com-fortable enough to show their true selves.
Unlike college degrees or finance certifications, which are easy to check off, determining whether a new hire will fit in with your corporate culture is more challenging to assess. That’s why even though it takes more effort, a thor-ough and extended evaluation is a wise investment of your time.

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP)
CAP Progress Report
Do any of your internal audit activities earn Chapter Achievement
Program (CAP) points for your Lansing Chapter of the IIA? What is
CAP, why is it important and what can you do to help?
The Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) is designed by the Institute
of Internal Auditors to guide chapters for developing quality programs
and completing administrative duties to ensure it is meeting its
obligations to its membership. Points are awarded for each activity
based upon the activity in accordance with IIA guidelines. The goal is
to provide valuable professional activities and development
opportunities to the membership and earn CAP points while doing it!
Certain activities that are conducted by membership may qualify. If
any of your activities qualify or you would like to know whether they
qualify, please contact Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected].
There are four performance levels that can be achieved.
BRONZE - 685 CAP Points
SILVER - 1,060 CAP Points
GOLD - 1,560 CAP Points
PLATINUM - This is a special level created to recognize
chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive years.

portant that we offer the membership valuable services and we as members do our obligatory role within
our organizations and communities by reaching out, educating and proving our value. Be sure to notify
Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected] if you have any CAP points to report.
Points are reported to the IIA on the 10th of each month covering three areas:
