Fighting against Spread of Coronavirus
The novel coronavirus continues to spread in the
west. In Hong Kong, there has not yet been a
major outbreak and things have not worsened.
The situation seems dawning but there are still
uncertainties. From the news reports, the risk of
backflow is still high, so Hong Kong must keep
high vigilance.
Effective prevention and control of communicable
diseases in buildings can safeguard the health of
building occupants and facilities users. We, the FM
practitioners, play a key role to exercise tight
control and best practices to assure safe operating
environment and workplace for guests, customers,
tenants and staff.
In the Feb FMC, we introduced literatures discussing the Guidelines on Infection Control &
Prevention and Emergency Operation and Management. This month, we select and elaborate on
the topics “Concept of Communicable Diseases” and “Principles of Prevention and Control” in the
FM Blog.

Principles of Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases
To prevent or control communicable diseases, appropriate infection control measures should be
implemented promptly to control the infective agents, sources of infection (reservoirs), mode of
transmission, and the susceptible hosts so as to break the chain of infection. Examples of control
measures are as follows :
Preventive Measures against Communicable Diseases
Change of Infection
Chain of Infection
In severe cases, they may lead to death. These infective agents can spread from a source of infection
(e.g. sick person) to a person through various modes of transmission.
Communicable Diseases
Communicable diseases refer to diseases that can be
transmitted and make people ill. They are caused by
infective agents (pathogens) e.g. bacteria and viruses,
which invade the body and multiply or release toxins to
cause damages to normal body cells and their functions.
Chain of Infection Infection Control Measures
Infective agents Disinfection and killing of all infective agents
Source of infection Early detection, isolation and treatment of sick and removal of
breeding sites
Mode of transmission Maintain good environmental, personal and food hygiene; adopt
infection control measures appropriate to the different modes of
transmission
Susceptible host Build up personal immunity by immunization and healthy lifestyles

CPD Requirements for Members
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a common requirement of most professional institutes to
ensure effective execution of professional duties throughout the members' working life. With the approval
of the Council, the Institute has laid down the CPD requirements for its members.
In brief, all members (including fellows) and associates should complete a minimum of 20 hours per year
on a mandatory basis starting from 1 July 2015. The CPD may come under 3 categories:
(1) education and training, (2) community, institutional and social services, (3) private study.
A minimum of 10 hours should fall within the type of education and training, of which at least 4 hours
should be FM related activities. Private study should be subject to a maximum claim of 5 hours per year.
The detailed requirements have been uploaded to the HKIFM homepage. Please click HERE for details.
