The unexpected storm we all encountered in Oct. 2011, created various safety situations that placed our members and the public in harm’s way. One of the most serious threats was electrical exposure from down power lines. With the thought of bad weather on the horizon, the RC Safety Officers Assn. at its next meeting Jan. 18 at Monsey firehouse, will host a Safety Awareness presentation.

It will be presented by O&R and will educate us in “Safe Practices” in responding to power problems (house fires, transformers, wires on a pole, down, on car). Let the old adage prevail “It’s better to be Safe than Sorry”. We urge all Safety Officers, Chiefs, Line Officers to attend.

NY-ALERT

The Rockland County Office of Fire & Emergency Services has begun a transition to the New York State Office of Emergency Management notification system known as NY-Alert.

When you register, you can list multiple devices from which you will receive alerts and notifications. Most alerts are issued locally by the County of local municipality. You may receive information on all the devices you registered, or just one. Each emergency is different; therefore, each alert will be tailored to meet the needs of the incident. If you are a first responder, you can choose to receive all notifications impacting a specific geographic area (e.g. West Nyack or Town of Clarkstown).

To ensure that you continue to receive vital information relative to local emergencies, traffic and weather, we strongly suggest you take a few moments to sign-up to receive notifications by visiting www.NYAlert.gov.

We anticipate this transition to be complete within the next 60-90 days; and at that time NY-Alert will be the only means of future notifications.

If you have any questions regarding this vital step toward future communication, please do not hesitate to call Nancy Baker, Communications Specialist with Rockland County Enhanced 9-1-1 at 845-364-8930.

PEARL RIVER LAST, ORANGEBURG FIRST

Just before the “Olde Year 2011” ended, the Pearl River FD volunteers’ New Years Eve was disrupted at 11:20 PM for a false alarm, that was the last dispatch reported Rockland County 44-Control to end 2011.

The new “Baby Year 2012” was barely welcomed in 25 minutes when Orangeburg was toned for “A Good Intent” call at 12:25 A.M.

New Year’s sleep was interrupted for two other Rockland Vamps. 1:40 AM, Valley Cottage rolled for what was an unintentional false alarm.

Then, within the hour at 2:29 AM, Brewer Engine in Monsey had a natural gas or propane leak for its first alarm. Keep Safe!
