RCFTC NEW CAR PROP RECV’D VIA GRANT

A Car Fire Training Prop – propane fed – was delivered to the RCFTC ON Wed., Jan. 23, 2013. This state-of-the-art training prop was acquired by a grant secured by Chris Jensen of the Office of Fire & Emergency Services. Training Coordinators Mike Healy and Bob Capello, along with Deputy Fire Coordinators George Drescher and Peter Byrne, worked several months with Mr. Jensen to spec out and then bid the prop.

Byrne expects the installation and onsite training should be completed soon. The prop can simulate an engine compartment fire, a truck fire or a passenger compartment fire – or any combination thereof. Trainees will also be able to “pop” the engine compartment hood.

The use of this training prop will eliminate the need to use actual cars to train on. Byrne points out that this is a safer way to teach firefighters how to extinguish a car fire and will have less of an impact on our environment. The training prop will be installed in the lower training field of the RCFTC.

FROM THE

FIRE COORDINATOR’S OFFICE

In our continuing drive to improve the training and learning experiences for our volunteers, the

FTC has just accepted a propane-fed car fire prop from Fireblast, Inc. This prop will enable our

volunteers to train in a safer and a more environmentally friendly setting. The trainees will be able

to practice their skills on an engine compartment fire, a front seat fire, a rear seat fire or any

combination thereof. The prop will be available for departmental training, course training and

Firefighter 1 and 2.

The past several years the County and the FTC has renovated the Tower, built a completely new

roof prop training area, renovated Building 2, and now have secured this new prop. Additionally,

the instructors are currently renovating the SCBA confidence maze in the Andrew Fredericks Fire

Safety Building. We will continue to try and meet the ever-changing demands and challenges our

volunteers face.
