Fueled by the need to surpass the limitations of conventionalmaterials, recent years have seen a large increase in engi-neering applications of advanced fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) composite materials in many major industries, suchas aerospace and defense, automotive, construction, marine,and oil and gas. FRP composites are very attractive for theseapplications due to their highly favorable material properties,including high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weightratios, and corrosion resistance. Studies conducted to datehave demonstrated the numerous advantages offered by FRPcomposites in various engineering applications. However,there are still a number of technical and implementationissues that need to be resolved prior to broader uptakeof the application of FRP composites by some engineeringcommunities such as civil construction. This special issueis aimed at disseminating the most recent advances anddevelopments in this exciting field.
A total of 17 paperswere submitted to the special issue andafter a rigorous peer-review process six of themwere acceptedto appear in the issue as original research articles. These sixpapers deal with a range of topics on the structural behaviorof composite members/structures and mechanical propertiesand development of composite materials. The studies onthe former investigate the dynamic behavior of compositeFRP bridge systems and flexural behavior of previouslydamaged steel beams repaired with FRP. The studies on thelatter are concerned with the development of ecoefficientengineered cementitious composites, mechanical propertiesof carbon fiber composites obtained using different molding
techniques, and properties of high-density and ultra-highmolecular weight polyethylene and heat-treated bamboofiber composites.
We hope that some of the most recent advances on thedevelopment and applications of FRP composites that havebeen disseminated in this special issue will be of interest toreaders and contribute toward the advancement of researchin the field.
