SOUTH AFRICA This is a notification to all Broth-ers of the Coast: Our young Companion of the Sea Antonio Franca will be cruising from Luanda to Cape Verde is-lands on board the Miura “Pé de Vento” ex Wings. You will be kept up-dated about his trip, this being his maiden oce-anic voyage. Fair Winds. VI BOCSA João E. F. da Costa (Capitão Revenge)

USA SAN JUAN TABLE After several quasi dormant years when most of our most active brothers took off for the high seas and/or vanished to parts unknown, we have begun for the third time in 20 years to gather speed with a group of new very active, marine-wise, Bichicumas . We will miss brother Bebo Backmann, #242, who lost his life at sea several months ago in a small plane. The San Juan Table meets at the San Juan Bay Marina monthly and September last, after passing his tests, Graham Albert Castillo, an avid racer and bronze star Iraq war

vet,was elevated as a Brother. GUATIKI brings with him several ocean loving young men who are now running the Bichicuma ganet. We hope to re-build the San Juan Table during the next year and by mid summer 2012 begin to intro-duce captives into our Brother-hood.

In the picture above, Brother Vic-tor Rodon, who holds up his flag #246, and I flank brother GUATIKI on the day he became a Brother of the Coast in late Sep-tember, 2011. Victor is a charter boat captain in the Virgin islands and is a tough guy to catch up with. GUATIKI helps me hold the San Juan Table flag as we pose during what I hope will be a memorable day.

In the picture, from left to right, we have Luis, Victor Rodon, Cubiche, Guatiki, Dustin and Mariano. The San Juan Table met again at San Juan Bay Marina in late Octo-ber to welcome 3 new bichicumas into the Brotherhood: Luis Jurabe, Dustin Romey and Mariano Richusa. We will continue to in-spire them with the overall objec-tives of our Brotherhood in hopes they will pass our tests.

6 THE TORTUGA POST

POLAND AN OLD STORY AND THE NEW VENTURE Dear Brothers, This is a request for help and advice. Soon we all shall be wit-nesses of the reconstruction of a medieval ship - carrack „Peter von Danzig” - organized by The Ar-chaeological Museum in Gdańsk - Poland. The complexity of that project require gathering as many information as possible about similar ventures held on other Coasts. We are turning to the Brotherhood for support. Certainly there are Brothers in the world who are interested in reconstruc-tion of historical ships and any topical information from them would be very valuable. That ship was built in XV cen-tury in Brittany and named „Pierre de La Rochelle”. In 1462 she sailed to Danzig (in out times Gdańsk) with load of salt. While waiting in the roadstead the big tempest arrived and thunderbolts caused serious ship damage. Re-pairs were very expensive and a loan was taken out to pay for works, which took several years. The owner Peter de Nautis died before settling the loan and the Hanseatic city of Danzig took pos-session of the ship. The trading ship „Pierre de La Rochelle” was transformed into warship „Peter von Danzig” - floating fortress, armed in 17 can-ons, 15 crossbows, hand cannon. an accommodation for 400 people. Masts were stepped using the fa-mous Great Crane building. In the summer 1471 „Peter von Danzig”, equipped with new sails, went on his second cruise to Bruges in Flanders. At the time she was the biggest ship on the Baltic Sea. She became a novelty using smooth

carvel planking, instead of over-lap-clinker one commonly used in northern Europe. In Bruges after some further re-furbishment „Peter von Danzig” was manned with soldiers and formed a squadron with three other vessels, On 6-th January 1472, they began to patrol English Channel. The expedition lasted 9 weeks and as a result Hanseatic League ships were free to sail the English Channel. Then the ship was bought from the city of Gdańsk by Johann Sid-inghusen, Tiedemann Valandt and Reinhold Niederhoff. In 1473 the leadership was taken by Pawel Beneke - the most famous Danzig privateer (‘kaper’). When sailing by the coast of England he cap-tured the florentine-burgundian galleon „San Mateo”. Beneke racked up a great booty worth about 48 thousands guilders, in-cluding Hans Memling’s painting „The Last Judgment” - which was later donated by Reinhold Nieder-hoff to St. Mary’s Church in

Gdańsk, where its copy can be seen until our days. The original painting moved to The National Museum of Gdańsk. In 1475 „Peter von Danzig”, with a large fleet, sailed from Gdańsk to France. The destination port was French Brouage - the same one she left 13 years earlier with salt load to Gdańsk. From this voyage she never come back. In

the port of Brouage the ship suf-fered such severe damages, that any attempts to reconstruct were abandoned. The wreck was demol-ished. And that was the sad end of the carrack. According to the known records „Peter von Danzig” had three masts, over 52 meters length, about 12 meters beam and draft of over 5 meters. Cargo capacity of about 800 tons and more than 750 square meters of sails. The model, shown on photo by E. Meksiak, was made by J. Litwin, director of The Central Maritime Museum in Gdańsk in accordance to recon-struction plans by Otto Lienau. That, in a nutshell, is the extraor-dinary story of the most famous and largest ship of Gdańsk at the time. The project of her historical reconstruction strives for the maximum compatibility with the original and accordance to rules existing in fifteenth century for shipwrights, carpenters and sail makers.

Brothers, we look forward to your opinions and remarks. Thanks in advance. Please send them directly to our coordinator Barbara Borda [email protected] The Spanish text of this appeal is also available at the page http://www.hermandaddelacosta.pl Jerzy Knabe VI Polonia

7 THE TORTUGA POST

NEWS FROM THE POLISH BROTH-ERS Polish Brothers decided that Na-tional Zafs should be longer than only one evening at the meal, should create better opportunity to connect for Brothers from differ-ent Tables – and should be located away from the capital, where eve-rything tends to be more expen-sive.

Such successful zafarrancho oc-curred in the region of Mazurian Lakes at the beginning of Novem-ber and lasted for the whole week-end. More than 80 persons at-tended, including Brothers, cap-tives and invited guests. The main guest of honour was owner of a triple-masted schooner, bought in Sweden and entering service under Polish flag. That ceremony happened only a months earlier – on 8 October. Newcomer vessel, ex- ‘Najaden’, was named sv ‘Kapitan Borchardt’, after a Polish author of extremely popular maritime stories. Election for National Captain was an important task of gathering. Same as the Polish Prime Minister before - our CN Jerzy Demetraki – Paleolog was elected for the sec-ond term. Two new Brothers, Wo-jciech Kot and Andrzej Kacała were voted into the Council of Seven. Vigia remained at his post, as it is filled on CN’s appointment – not by election. Meetings abroad related by CN included Italian Lake Como Zaf in October and his cordial reception by Portsmouth Table in July. In-

ternational contacts are to be in-tensified, there are plans afoot for Polish-American Zaf in the au-tumn of 2012 and International Lake Zaf at Polish Mazurian re-gion in 2013. On the home front, we paid hom-age for seven of our Brothers re-cently departed on last voyage. Four new Brothers were sworn in, and - Joy of Joys! - awaited for many years “Dykcjonarz Mesy Kaprów Polskich” was at long last delivered, published black on white and distributed. Interesting life stories of many Brothers, writ-ten by them selves were immedi-ately eagerly sampled... One of them is a recipient of 2012 Glory of the Seas Award, who was de-cided on Zaf – but for now I am keeping it secret – until the Cere-mony later in the year. Jerzy Knabe VI Polonia

NEW ZEALAND

On November 27th, the New Zea-land Table of the Brotherhood of the Coast did glorious battle with copious amounts of food and wine in celebration of our 10th year of existence!

We are proud to report that a good number of our brothers are presently sailing overseas, hopefully enrapturing our Interna-tional Brothers with sea stories of daring-do and enchanting your cabin girls ( see list below ).

However, we were still able to muster a large and lively crowd of Brothers and Captives who, amongst the roar of canons, clin-king of glasses, and bellowing of sea shanties, enjoyed a most me-morable Zaferrancho.

Again, we would like to remind any and all International Brothers sailing the Seven Seas that our boats are always open to you, our best hammocks reserved, and a welcome drink (or two) awaits you.

11 THE TORTUGA POST

FIRST INTERNATIONAL ZAFARRANCHO OF THE LAKES COMO - 2011 Three sunny days have made this meeting welcomed by Italian Brotherhood with the collabora-tion of the Swiss Brothers. Friday, october 7 was scheduled a match race, which unfortunately could not be realized because of the strong wind. Subscribers to the event did not lose heart and with a true spirit of frolic had boarded the surroundings areas to explore the many interesting and scenic beauty of the place. Saturday, october 8 the wind was reduced and so we carried out the planned boat trip up to Bellagio and interesting stop at the beauti-ful Villa Carlotta and its park. In the evening gala dinner at the Grand Hotel of Como one of the main events of this Zafarrancho with the participation of the many tables that occurred from Italy and abroad, for being with happiness and Brotherhood spirit. In addition to Italian Tables, led by the Gran Commodoro Bedogni Marcello and the Scrivano Maggiore Piantoni Maurizio, was attended by representatives of: the Warsaw Table, with Polish Na-tional Captain Jerzy Paleolog, New York Table with U.S. Vigie Joe Citarella, Texas, Ticino, Ge-neva and Zeebrugge Tables. Ex-changes of gifts, hugs, sincere friendship and at the end of the evening the solemn promise of the Polish National Captain to organ-ize in 2013 a new INTERNA-TIONAL LAKE’S ZAFARRAN-CHO in the lakes of his country. Sunday, October 9 was scheduled trip by seaplane on the lake. The wind, was once again, no friend, and we was obliged to change the program. So all to see the seaplane hangars, still working with historical artifacts, which date back to the 40s and earlier. Then walking in the beautiful tourist and cultural city of Como

and then served lunch at the Yacht Club of the city, in a superb posi-tion overlooking the lake. The usual fraternal embrace toegether with promises to meet again in the next International Meeting of the Lakes, have com-pleted this first International Lake’s Zafarrancho.

A Tale of Two Dinners It was the best of times.... NY Brothers Joe Citarella (with Captive Gail) and Jane Protzman attended the Lake Como Zaf. A great time was had meeting new Brothers and Captives during the events arranged by the Italian and Swiss Brothers. Lake Como was a perfect setting for a Brotherhood Zaf as getting around involved using motoscafi similar to those used in Venice – in fact I noticed that some of the boats were built in Venice. The weather was per-fect – warm for the season and sunny so that the views were spec-tacular. Among the many Brothers we met was Cesare Lucini from Lugano with his talented Captive Lore-dana, who graced the Zaf with her musical talents. Cesare kindly invited us to dine at his home in Lugano. We were joined after the Zaf by NY Brother Charlie Fine and Captive Ina – the five of us proceeded to explore the various villages lining Lake Como and one day we drove to Lugano to dine with Cesare, Loredana and

his lovely daughter Laura. Cesare and Loredana prepared a traditional dinner for us, which we happily consumed along with Ce-sare's wonderful wine, which he makes himself. As the evening progressed and the wine flowed, I urged Cesare's family to come to New York for a visit, which he thought would be a wonderful idea. As usual for Brothers travel-ing to other Tables, we would ar-range some events during their visit so that they could meet other NY Brothers and also see the NY area not as tourists but as our Brothers. Cesare and family made the trip and we showed them parts of NY and Connecticut where NY Broth-ers lived. The NY Brothers invited them to a traditional dinner at Brother Tony Olmer's and Captive Theo's house. As Cesare's visit was close to Thanksgiving, we decided to have a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner, complete with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and other trimmings. The dinner was at-tended by other NY Brothers and captives with great revelry, many OOOrza's and concertina music by NY Brother Lenny Sinowitz. There were other visits to Brother Jane Protzman's and Charlie Fine's homes as well. As I reflect back on these dinners, I am reminded of how special our Brotherhood is in fostering frater-nal ties that transcend language, cultures and national borders by unconditionally opening our homes and hearts to Brothers. OOOOrzaaaa!!!

SO WHERE IS THE

DIRECTORY ? Our Brotherhood has generated about a dozen web sites Many are excellent; others have been posted, and then forgotten by their web-masters. There are two however, created more than 10 years ago by our Brother Brise-Galets that are healthy because they are lovingly maintained. They are not fun places but they are indispensable tools to our fraternity. Learn how to have an access to them and to use them. Currently, only 10% of the Brothers listed in the BocList have given themselves the possi-bility to have access to our data base. There is, first Brisegalets (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brisegalets/). This is an unofficial site that allows all the Brothers enrolled to disseminate informa-tion of general interest to other members. It currently has about 300 members. The site called SECOIN DIFFU-SION (http://groups.yahoo.com/ group / secoin /) is the database of our brotherhood. It is used for the dis-tribution of TTP or other docu-ments sent by SECOIN (but unlike brisegalets it is not a mail service to be used by our Brothers). It contains all important docu-ments, especially the DIREC-TORY that, for reasons of data protection, we no longer publish in Tortuga Post. 2700 Brothers are enrolled. Here is the user’s manual by Brise-Galets: The procedure to gain access is not as simple as we would wish, but this is in order to pro-tect the privacy and confidenti-ality of the site.

First, one has to create an ac-c o u n t w i t h Y a h o o (www.yahoo.com). Make sure that when filling in your regis-tration form you enter as alter-nate e-mail the one listed in the BocList (unless your current address is a Yahoo address) . Then click on "Create my ac-count". Then do "sign in" on the home page of Yahoo.com. After that you should be able to have ac-cess to our data base at "http://groups.yahoo.com/ group/secoin/". If you have any problem, just send a mail to Bernard at [email protected]. MAIS OU EST DONC LE

DIRECTORY ?
