A busy start to the year in April withthe launch of the Village CommunityWebsite (by Richard Bell) and thenewly formed TEP (Traffic,Environment & People) Group startingto make some real progress.Cllr. Del Henty supervised therecruitment and efforts of theCommunity Work parties whogradually cleared the ‘jungle’ behindthe Pre-School on the Glebe Landearly in the year, and shortlythereafter FPC paid for extensiverepairs to the rear and side walls ofthe pre-school.In May we saw the erection of a newnoticeboard for Nepcote Green, donated by the family of Johannesand Maureen Tinner, both ofwhom had died in the previous fewmonths. This notice-board isavailable for any villageorganisation wishing to advertiseits future functions. In June weagreed the legal ownershiptransfer of Pond Green from ArunDC to Findon Parish Council. Thetitle to Pond Green has still notbeen concluded due to severallegal hurdles that have not yetbeen passed. In spite of that theFindon Volunteers run by CllrsCarr and Henty have carried outthe work to trim the hedges andground to make the green moreusable for villagers. The Sheep Fair on September10th was blighted by rain, whichcut the normal attendance down toabout 60% of the ‘norm’.Nevertheless an excess of £2000was made, and grants weredistributed to the Pre-School andthe Governors Fund for St.John’s

Primary School. The Sheep FairCommittee are always prepared toconsider grant applications from villageorganisations following each year’s Fair(profits permitting!), with preference beinggiven to the youth of the village. The TEP group organised a speed andparking survey on all the key routes intoand out of the village, this has nowresulted in an agreement by WSCCHighways to reduce the speed in thecentre of the village to 20mph, beginningnext January 2018. Later in Septemberthe village post office and shop was put onthe market by Dave & Gayle Stewart, butas yet there seems to have been littleinterest from potential buyers.

In October the Village Pre-Schoolstarted a concerted effort to raiseenough money for a new building, FPChaving obtained a grant for £16,500from a special fund being wound up byArun DC. Later in October the TEPgroup got confirmation that the villagewould get a grant of £60,000 fromWSCC Highways towards theremodelling of the centre of the village, the introduction of a 20mph limit, andincreasing the pavement width upSchool Hill for the safety and benefit ofchildren and mums going to the school.November saw the long-awaitedNeighbourhood Plan Referendum takeplace, strangely in the Black Horse.94.5% of those voting approved theadoption of the plan, which was then‘made’ following a meeting of thePlanning Committee of the SDNPA onDecember 8th. More recently there hasbeen a concerted effort by somevillagers to have the NeighbourhoodPlan amended in the light of oppositionto the proposed site allocations bySDNPA.Later in November we all saw theChristmas Lights go up, and the villagewas once again grateful for the efforts ofCorinne Ball and Cllr.Jan Mackerell, together with many helpers. Each year

more lights are bought, either withgrants from the Parish Council or indeedthe Sheep Fair Committee.A second grant application for £24000was made by the council to theOperation Watershed fund from WSCCin December, and this was approved inits entirety, and will be carried out byEdburtons in June/July 2017. The workwill involve drainage improvements tothe edge of Nepcote Green and thebottom of Stable Lane to prevent waterfrom running into the village square.Sadly we lost 3 councillors in the lastyear, Dave Young resigned in July,Melissa Oligario in September and aftera rather short stay Simon Moore left usin March. Fortunately John Barnettjoined us in December and Sean Smithhas also been appointed since the newcouncil year started, bringing us back tofull complement again. This is also anappropriate moment to acknowledge thecontinued efforts and excellence of ourParish Clerk Fiona Macleod, whocontinues to serve the village so well, aswell as all those councillors who give somuch of their time and expertise to keepthe village alive and well.

As those villagers attending the AGM ofFPC will be aware, no current councillorwas prepared to stand for Chairman insuccession to the undersigned. I wish tostep down from the post after 10 yearsin the position.Due to the need for someone to chairthe AGM, and to give all councillorsanother opportunity to consider thefuture, I agreed to stand again asChairman for the period up to, but notincluding, the next FPC meeting on June26th. My resignation will take effect onJune 25th.At the June meeting we must all hopethat a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman will be prepared to beproposed and elected for the yearending at the next AGM in May 2018.Should no Chair or Vice-Chair be willing

to stand, then the Parish Council faces adifficult future, with no one to work withour excellent Parish Clerk, or attendCounty meetings, as well as liaise withSALC (Sussex Association of LocalCouncils), SDNPA and WSCC.I fully intend to continue as a councilloruntil 2019, when I will have served for20 years as Chairman of the FinanceCommittee, as well as Vice-Chair to ourlast Chairman, the much missed LenPrior. I have thoroughly enjoyed leadingthe council during my tenure, in spite ofseveral difficult years when the villagewas invaded by the county’s scourge oftravellers, who even today are still athreat to the village as the summerarrives!Best wishes to my successor, Peter Goldsworthy

Clapham & Patching Spring ShowThis year’s Clapham &Patching Spring Showwas a great successAs it was held much later in the year than usualwe had few daffodils as exhibits but this wasmore than compensated for by the large numberof tulip entries. There were also more entries inthe flower arrangement categories and the hallboth looked and smelled delightful.During the afternoon the visitors were treated to

a chance to pet lambs, enjoytea and cake in the committeeroom or spend their money onthe stalls, as well as admiringthe various exhibits. The prize for Best Entry overallwent to Keith Preston for hisBelgian Buns.

Such an incredible SummerRevels this year! One of Findon Village's oldesttraditions, now dating back over160 years, began at St John theBaptist CofE Primary School onSaturday 13th May with achildren's procession to PondGreen led by the traditionalaccordion player TomTownsend (on his 28th year)! The sun broke through theclouds as the childrenperformed their well-practisedcountry dancing watched on by many eager parents and locals before making theirway back to the village school for the hugely popular maypole dancing.

The event was then officially openedby this year's popular Worthing TownCrier Bob Smytherson and ourbeloved Reverend Helena Buqué.Rev. Helena also crowned this year'sbeautiful May queen and attendees –Millie O’Neil as the Queen, with FreyaHunt and Leila Skelding as theattendees. This year's Summer Revels saw manyhundreds attending raising thousandsof pounds for the charity St John theBaptist CofE PTA, which is dedicatedto supporting the village school.

With fairground rides, circusperformers, children's entertainers, bouncy castles, assault courses, garden games, candy floss, beertents, pimms, bbq's (cookingPeckham Butchers finest handmadeburgers and sausages), the amazingSweeps Sheep Dog and GeeseShow, birds of prey displays byHawking About, BubbleJo’sshowstopping bubbles and a wholehost of village fete activities. It reallywas a village tradition not to bemissed!

Unbelievably all ofthis was run solely byvolunteers, organised by thevillage school's PTA with freeadmission to all!The St John the Baptist CofEPrimary School's PTA is an incrediblyhardworking charity that works tirelesslythroughout the year organising variousvillage events. It encourages closerlinks between the local community andschool by organising social activitiesthat not only raise funds but alsoprovide an opportunity for residents, parents, staff and pupils to get together. This also includes the Findon VillageFirework Fantasia, the Summer Revels, and refreshments at the Findon SheepFair.Funds raised by the PTA provide‘extras’ not already provided by theschool’s budget. Findon News thought you may beinterested in to know the latestdevelopments arising from the work of theTEP (Traffic Environment and People)Parish Council sub Committee.Last month Cllrs Karen Roberts, JohnHavenhand, Deborah Urquart and adviserand planning consultant David Hutchison, met with members of the HighwaysDepartment from West Sussex CountyCouncil. Following that meeting approvalhas been given for:

Gateways at the four entrances to thevillage with 20 mph signs on them. (TheNepcote junction with A24 will not have aGateway but there will be a 20mph sign)

Visually contrasting “imprinted”pedestrian surfacing around the corner ofSchool Hill and the Gun to help improvethe safety of pedestrians. The narrowestpart of the “imprinted” surface will be 1.1metres. (It could not be made any wideras the road is two way on School Hill). There may also be a similar imprintedflush pavement outside of the VillageHouse.

Removal of the centre line in theSquare. (The longer term aim of the TEPgroup is to make the Square visuallyappear as “shared space” helping toimprove safety for pedestrians and alterthe perception of drivers that pedestriansshould get out of the way!).

Yellow lines at the top on the corner of

School Hill as visibility is poor whenrestricted by parked cars on thecorner. The work, which is to be funded fromthe West Sussex County CouncilHighways budget, is due to start inJanuary 2018.Cllr John Havenhand (Chairman ofTEP) noted that progress may appearto be slow but the Parish Councilwere pushing things forward asquickly as they possibly could. The next stage was to try to improvecar parking and establish informationpoints for visitors to the South Downs. The glebe land at the rear of theVillage Hall had already beenidentified as a possibility for parkingand if this could be funded it wouldalso help relieve parking on the HighSt. In the longer term the Square alsoneeded resurfacing and there werenumerous suggestions for visualenhancement. He also hoped that apedestrian footpath could eventuallybe established on the west side of theHigh Street linking the Village Halland the Square – this would not meetthe approval of the Highwaysdepartment unless car parking on theeast side of the High Street (oppositethe proposed footpath) could berelocated. Otherwise the road is toonarrow.

JOSHUA THE GARDENERProfessional Organic GardenerAs seen on TV with Monty Don

Garden design and creative maintenanceRHS trained and qualified

07780332452j o s h u a t h eg a rd en er@ g ma i l . co m

The summer solstice falls on June 21stand we can all celebrate the longest dayby gardening late into the night.I’ve long had a love for folklore, mythsand legends (especially that of Englandand the south downs), but its onlyrecently that I’ve began to explore thisfascination of folklore into the world ofhorticulture! It’s been absolutelyfascinating! From how to keep witchesat bay by nailing the herb Dill to yourfront door -"trefoil, vervain, johns wort, dill, that hindereth witches of their will..."- to more proven practices such asplanting in the right moon cycle forbetter healthy crops.Moon gardening is something I’ve beenpracticing on our no dig vegetablegarden. It's definitely something that Iwill continue to explore; it's simplysowing, planting and harvesting at theright times - no you don't have to do it atnight! The old ways of gardening I seem to bedrawn to. With fewer people having ageneral understanding of planthusbandry and the knowledge ofgrowing, it’s unfortunate that these wayswill be the first to be forgotten in the‘modern’ age.But If your not planning to keep witchesfrom knocking or moon dancing around

the garden, here are some other jobs tobe getting on with in the jolly month ofJune:Vegetable Garden

Pinch out any side shoots from yourtomato plants and feed once the firsttruss is setting fruit. You can pot up theside-shoots to create new tomatoplants.

Continue to earth up potato plants asthey grow. If you're growing potatoes inbags simply add more compost to halfway up the plant stem.

Harvest salad crops and re-sowevery 2 weeks for a constant supply oftasty leaves.Flower Garden

Towards the end of June, if yourhardy Geraniums have finishedflowering cut them back to encouragenew foliage and flowers.

Cut back bulb foliage as soon as ithas died down naturally.

Stake tall or floppy perennial plants toprevent wind damage. As new shoots grow, tie in and trainclimbing plants such as honeysuckleand clematis to their supports.

Have a lovely solstice and happygardening

“Thank You” from Deborah UrquhartThrough the Findon News I would like to thank the residents of Findon forsupporting me over the past four years and in particular, at the recent CountyCouncil elections. It is an honour to serve this special community and I lookforward to representing you all at County Council over the next four years. The first piece of good news I can now give Findon, is that following a great deal oflobbying by myself and your Parish Council, WSCC has agreed to the installationof new bus laybys North and Southbound around the North End and crematoriumlocations. Design will be this year, for delivery next year at the latest. Work is stillbeing undertaken for a possible permanent solution at North Farm.

Crime Report May 2017Following the ransomware cyber attackin May which affected the NHS andother organisations globally, the City ofLondon Police’s National FraudIntelligence Bureau has issued an alerturging both individuals and businessesto follow protection advice. For Businesses the National CyberSecurity Centre’s technical guidanceincludes specific software patches touse that will prevent uninfectedcomputers on your network frombecoming infected with the “WannaCry”Ransomware: www.ncsc.gov.uk andsearch for ransomware.

Key Protect advice is to install systemand application updates; Install anti-virus software and keep it updated;create regular backups of your files to aexternal device (hard drive/memorystick) - do not leave this connected toyour computer as any infection couldspread to that too; only install apps fromofficial app stores such as Google’sPlay Store, or Apple’s App Store ; donot disable any of the default securityfeatures of your device.

Be warned that fraudsters may exploitthis high profile incident and use it aspart of phishing/smishing campaigns.Sussex Police urge people to becautious if they receive any unsolicitedcommunications. An email address canbe spoofed. Don’t open attachments orclick on the links within any unsolicitedemails you receive, and never respondto emails that ask for your personal orfinancial details. The sender’s name and number in atext message can be spoofed, so even ifthe message appears to be from anorganisation you know you should still

exercise caution, particularly if the textsare asking you to click on a link or call anumber.

‘DVLA vehicle tax’ text messages:Police are warning residents not to betaken in by cold callers or textmessages suggesting they are due aDVLA vehicle tax refund. A Worthingresident recently reported such anincident claiming he was owed a DVLAvehicle tax refund. The bogus link sitewas to an equally bogus UK Govlooking site asking for bank details torefund money direct. This resident waswise and the attempt was unsuccessful.Police are aware that that there havebeen some similar reports elsewhere inthe county.Never disclose your personal orfinancial details during a cold call, andremember that the police and banks willnot ring you and ask you to verify yourPIN, ask you to withdraw your cash, ortransfer money to another “safe”account. If you have been affected by this or anyother fraud, report it to Action Fraud bycalling 0300 123 2040, or visitwww.actionfraud.police.uk.

As usual all our cat pens are full.Cats come in for all sorts of reasons. Somany are given to us when their owners die, some cats are jealous when a new babyarrives, or hate a new house when thefamily move and keep going back to the oldhouse.Often when a marriage ends neither of thecats owners are able to find accommodationwhere landlords will accept cats. Two friendly tabbies arrived this week (Ericand Ernie) when their owners split up.Another lovely friendly cat arrived tonightbecause their toddler kept squeezing the catwho today scratched the toddlers cheek. One owner recently offered us £500 to lookafter her cat for four weeks while she movedwith her job. She couldn't pay us any moneyuntil the end of the month, and left her catwith us. After four weeks we started leavingmessages on her phone every day but shefailed to ring us. We had a surprise one

morning to find her cat had givenbirth to a kitten! Just as we hadgiven up on the owner ever comingback she phoned to say she nowworks and lives in Devon and wasas surprised as we were to hearher cat had given birth. She alsocouldn’t pay the £500 as she hadlots of other expenses! She saidsomeone from Brighton would becollecting and delivering the catand kitten to her! If she has nomoney, I doubt it!Another lady paying £50 a night ina B&B asked us to look after hercat for two weeks as the house shewas waiting to move into washaving a new kitchen and bathroomfitted. She said the builders wereslow and never there! Her poor catis still here, and so fed up!
