Sometimes our children can surpriseand often delight us. Sometimes theycan really put you on the spot too! Acouple of weeks ago, 4 year old Romillycame up to me at the back of the churchat the end of the Service and asked mehow she could give God a hug. How toanswer that?! Thinking on my feet, Iasked her who else she might hug. Heranswer – Mum, Dad; why? “Because Ilove them.” We talked about how Godhad made our world and how everythingwe loved was part of him (see Genesischapter 1; “and He saw that it wasgood”) and Romilly seemed happy to goaway and hug anything she loved as asymbol of her love for God who createdit. It makes you think, doesn’t it? Ourchildren see things so much moreclearly than we do. No wonder Jesustaught that we must become like littlechildren, that ‘the Kingdom of Godbelongs to such as these’ (Mark 10:11-16) So often, we complicate issues, bringing along our own ‘baggage’ andacquired prejudice (even ifunconsciously) instead of simply seeingwhat is there in front of us andaccepting it as it is. The children weredrawn to Jesus because they loved him;the disciples tried to stop them, maybefor the best of reasons, knowing theirMaster was tired perhaps, but this gaveJesus the opportunity to teach thatimportant lesson about receiving theKingdom of God (in his teaching) withthe trust and acceptance of a little child.Thank you, Romilly, for reminding mealso once more of the importance of thesimple things in life! Remember, a hug

is a great gift; one size fits all!

Those of you who came along to theBernardi Music Group Concertorganised by the Friends of St John theBaptist Church, Findon on September21st will, like me, have been treated toan exceptional evening of wonderfulmusic and classy refreshments, withpre-concert wine and fantastic canapés(made from locally sourced ingredientsby Gay Hibbs, Ann Hollyhomes andtheir helpers) served in Findon Place, thanks to the generous hospitality ofDominic and Sarah and a glass of localNyetimber during the concert interval. How wonderful to experience a concertof this calibre locally! The acoustics inour church are amazing and we hadanother opportunity to enjoy the talent ofmore local young musicians at the new-style 10am Worship Service on the firstSunday of October, when Becca Lieubrought 4 of her flute pupils and acouple of friends to lead the music forus. Thanks to all who came to supportthis new venture (there were 66 peoplethere!) and to Becca for her support andtalent. I’ve had so many positivecomments about the new Service. Whynot join us on 4th November at 10am,when our music will be provided bySpring into Soul Community GospelChoir!

Finally, I look forward to seeing you atthe Remembrance Day Service (startingat the later time of 9.45) where we willalso be dedicating the memorial statueof the soldier (currently on Pond Green)Other Services can be found at the backof this magazine as usual.Every blessing, Helena

Heis always the last to leave and lock upafter putting all the equipment away. His lighting and acoustic talents alsoenrich fundraising concerts and specialservices in the churches.

John’s home is beautifully lit atChristmas. Until recently he has furtherdelighted local people when he hasclimbed his ladder each year, to putChristmas lights on the fir tree in thecentre of Patching. This has beenincreasingly difficult as the tree hasgrown, and alas is now too tall.

A Christian poet once wrote, “Historyrepeats itself; it has to , no-one listens!”These are words we do well toremember in our current politicalclimate, especially as we remember the100th anniversary of the end of WWIthis month. Looking back on thepolitical context that led to war it isstriking how much our culture haschanged. A lot of the warlike rhetoricand posturing; the appeal to patriotism;and the sense of our individualidentities being tied up with nationalones seems strange and dated. At thetime, these attitudes combined with thearrogance of empire were a toxiccombination that led to the horrificconflict with the loss of so many lives. However, elements of these attitudesremain. We always have a preferencefor our own tribe . In the current brexitdebate there are rational arguments onboth sides, but the xenophobia that hasbeen unearthed is deeply troubling.

Christians are instructed to pray for ourpolitical leaders and to live in peacewhere we can, but one of the thingsthat got the early Christians into troublewas their political subversion. Christianreligious practices declared thatCaeser wasn’t Lord; Jesus was. Thatsort of talk could (and did) get youkilled. The personal security thatsustained this was a conviction thatthey were first and foremost citizens ofheaven. In Jesus they had experiencedthe power of the other country breakinto their experience. For Christians, unlike our wider culture, this hasn’tchanged.

With best wishes+Richard

Lamb attacked by dogs on Cissbury EstateShortly after birth a lamb was abandoned by its mother on Cissbury Estate.Luckily Keith Manning a retired shepherd who lives on Cissbury Estate came tothe rescue. The lamb was in a poor condition and needed some intensive care. After several weeks of hand rearing the lamb was adopted as a pet by EttaWyatt and the staff on the Cissbury Estate. They named him ‘Boris’, and helived peacefully in the fields at Cissbury.

‘Boris’ was seven months old on 15th October when Etta heard the sound ofdogs attacking. She rushed out to find Boris trying to hide from two maraudingdogs. Poor Boris had sustained savage wounds to his legs and neck.Etta chased the dogs off and summoned the vet to see the stricken lamb.

Once again in his short life Boris was in poor condition. Boris was unable towalk and Etta and the Estate staff took turns in caring for him. It took severaldays until Boris was back on his feet.

Apparently Sussex Police have been informed of the incident.

We regularly have telephone calls frompet owners asking us to take in theirunwanted animals, some for the usualreasons, we have a new baby, weare moving into a flat, (no petsallowed), someone in the family isallergic, we are going abroad. Somepeople move and leave cats behind, orsadly die and the poor animals are leftin the garden to fend for themselves. This happened in a recent case whenneighbours rang us to say there are twocats living in a garden in Lancing, theirowner died recently, the cats are sofrightened and won't eat.

One 17-year-old cat arrived today thathad been kept in a garage without awindow, they had a dog who wouldhave killed the cat, the cat belonged totheir Mother who died and they wereabout to have the cat put to sleep if wecouldn't take it.

In many of our pens are stray cats noneof which are microchipped. Some areold needing their bad teeth removed, which involves having a blood test first.Today a Dog needed an X-ray and twocats had blood tests costing £467.49!

Four cats are here after a bad fire inWorthing, three homes were badlydamaged and social services told us wewere their last chance as no other

rescue centre could help. The last timewe took in two cats when ahouse burned to the ground the verynext day one of the cats had kittens. The owner lost everything including hermobile phone, so we had no address orphone number for her. We had all thekittens inoculated and found homes forthe kittens and had the two adult catsspayed. I saw the owner in Tesco andwhen she saw me she put her basketdown and ran out of the shop. We hadthe cats for over a year. One day I wentout, when I returned one of ourVolunteers told me, “A lady had been inand collected her two cats, it was quitealright because she had seen Staceyoutside!" A thank you would have beennice!

We are dreading the fireworks; ouranimals and our hens get so frightenedevery year.

Lost PropertyIn alignment with police forces nationally Sussex Police will no longer recordreports of lost property in police stations, in person, online, email or through 101.

The national decision was approved by the National Police Chief’s Council(NPCC) after discussions between police forces and the National Police FrontCounters Forum (NPFCF). Traditionally, police have accepted the responsibility ofrecording lost and found property, although there is no statutory duty to do so.

Chief Inspector Roy Hodder, Communications Department said: “Although lostproperty will no longer be recorded by police, we are accepting items of foundproperty.

There are a range of other free services which will allow you to report if an itemhas gone missing.

Also it is worth noting that some items of lost property need to be reported directlyto the relevant issuing authority. For example a lost passport is to be reported tothe passport agency, a driving licence to the DVLAor credit cards to the bank or financial provider. There are a few exceptions though. In cases whereitems which are dangerous or hazardous such asammunition, firearms, weapons, chemicals/poisonsare lost, these are to be reported to policeimmediately.

Where an item has a serial number such as electricalequipment, it’s recommended that they areregistered at www.immobilise.com which is free ofcharge. This will also help police identify and reuniteyou with your property if it was ever stolen.

No Crimes Reported In The Area During The Past Month

You can report crime and incidents such as anti-social behaviour and vandalismby ringing the 101 telephone number or online atwww.sussex.police.uk/reportonline

October’s planned meeting (take sixcooks) was replaced with a talk on ‘TheSecret Life of a Hedgehog’. GrahamBowring of St Francis Animal Care gaveus a tremendously entertaining talk, ably assisted by his prickly friends, thelovely Harvey and his daughter Holly, anewcomer to the art of public speaking, who stole our hearts. Graham informedus that the main reasons for thedecrease in Hedgehogs is the increasein badgers. Man-made hazards includeswimming pools, garden ponds withoutan escape ramp and the use of slugpellets. He encouraged us to leave outwater (not milk) during dry periods andencouraged us to cut small holes in ourfences so these nocturnal creatures cansafely pass from one garden to another. Thanks to Graham for a wonderful talkat short notice.

The Weary Walkers enjoyed a veryinteresting walk around WestChiltington . Maggie led us through theNyetimber vineyard (where harvest was

in full swing), to Nutbourne where wepaused for a brief pause at the RisingSun, before continuing through twomore vineyards and an alpaca farm. This wonderful walk finished atSouthlands Valley vineyard where wehad the great pleasure of meeting theowner Sarah Lavery and sharing abottle of her superb 2014 sparklingblush wine.
