Editors Decision List –  Daniel Da’Costa Brewster

Editors’ decision list is the count of all the shots, which were filmed by DMS Entertainment and the

decision whether to use them, or not.

Film: Behind Closed Doors

Director: Sunraj Bolina

Editor: Daniel Da’Costa Brewster

Camera Person: Margaret Ansu

Location: Oaks Park High School

Shot Use of Shot Why

Medium Shot of Lucy Walking YES Shot is used as an establishingshot, shows good panning and

follows well with the next shot.

Long Shot of Lucy WalkingNO The shot wasn’t strong enough as

it wouldn’t have really set the

tone as an establishing shot as

Lucy went on to enter her house.

Medium Shot of Lucy Walking

with Panning

NO The shot was a good shot

however the panning in my

opinion ruined the shot in terms

of my vision for the film, so I

opted for the same shot with thepan.

Medium shot, Feet walking past

YES This shot was used because it

showed variety; I used it because

it gave us a range of shots which

could be used for just the walking

scene.

Close up of Lucy ( Eyes )YES Used to help get the audience a

feel of her emotion from the

start, it gives a clear indication

that she is unhappy.

Bird’s eye view of door

NO Although the initial thought of

the shot was genius, trying to pull

it off was very hard and the shot

wasn’t up to the standard and

therefore discarded.

Over the shoulder Lucy WalkingNO The shot didn’t appeal to me as in

front of her wasn’t a subject or

object worth using the shot.

NO I thought it was best not to use

this shot as we wanted to show

emotion alongside the non-

P.O.V Lucy Walking

NO I initially decided to use this shot

however after many run through

of the final product I decided thatthe shot wasn’t needed and

therefore pointless to include.

Pan of Lucy walking

YES This shot was used because it

showed Lucy changing direction

and if not used, the follow up

shot wouldn’t have made any

sense to the audience.

Medium shot inside the

Door/House

YES I had chosen this shot to show

Lucy entering the house, as it was

a sharp and imaginative shot

rather than a over the should or

P.O.V shot.

High Angle Shot of Lucy Entering

the house

NO I opted not to use this shot as a

high angle shot normally portrays

someone of authority and this

would completely contradict the

whole idea around the character

Lucy.

Low angle PanYES Low angle shot which allows for

creativity showing Lucy walking

up the stairs to continue the

narrative.

Medium shot walking up the

stairs

NO  I thought that for the opening 30

seconds there wasn’t much

variety in terms of shots and

opted to stay away from the

medium shot.

Bird’s eye view – Lucy walking up

the stairs

NO We filmed three times and on the

first time we got this shot perfect,

however we didn’t film this shot

again and the actress changed

her hair style.

Close up – Lucy Hand

YES I used this shot because it

showed that Lucy was enteringanother room, If I had just cut to

her in a different room it would

have broken the equilibrium and

understanding of the audience.

P.O.V Lucy opening the door diegetic score music which meant

that her facial expression and

body posture had to be visible.

Medium shot – Lucy entering the

roomYES Match on action shot which

follows up the shot of Lucy

opening the door with a close up.P.O.V of the folder NO This again was a very creative

shot, however hair style ruined it.

Close up - School signYES This was used as an establishing

shot to help the audience

understand there has been a

change in location.

Establishing shot, pan of the

school

YES I chose to use this shot to give the

audience a clear perspective that

we’ve cut to another scene as it’s

a follow up shot of the close up of

the school sign.

Medium shot / depth of field

YES I used this shot as it uses depth of

field to move from the

background to then unfocused

the background and focus on Mr

Wicks in the frame.

Medium shot / pan outside the

classroomNO Opted for the depth of field shot

as it brings more of a range to the

use of camera shots.

Close up – Whiteboard shows

‘Detention’

YES Explains everything and tells the

audience that it’s after school and

it helps explain the narrative in

terms of the attitudes of the

characters.

Close up – Hand of MarkYES I thought this was a good shot

and explained that he had been

doing work for a long time whilst

in detention.

Over the shoulder shot of MarkNO This shot would have shown Mr

Wicks in as well and we didn’t

have a follow up shot to use this

shot.

Low angle shot - Mark NOThe shot would’ve made Mark

seem in charge and a man of

power which was not what we

wanted to portray.

P.O.V PaperYES This was one of our most creative

shots as it gave indication of

Mark being frustrated whilst in

detention.

Medium close up – Mr WicksYES This shot was good to introduce

Mr Wicks as he was shown to be

a hard working man.

Long shot

NO I had chosen not to use this shot

however it would have been good

to use as it would have shownboth Mr Wicks and Mark in the

same shot.

Medium Shot - Mark

YES I picked this shot as it was the

follow up shot of Mr Wicks

medium shot and I believed it

created a kind of standoff

between both characters.

Extreme Close up – Mr Wicks

NO I had originally decided to use this

shot however I changed my mind

mid way through editing as I

wanted to make the film a little

longer.

Medium Close up – Mr WicksYES This shot was used because it

helps introduce the next shot and

it also shows that Mr Wicks is a

teacher.

Close up /Eye line Match - Clock

YES With Mr Wicks looking towards

his left, I had to use the shot to

show what he was looking at, this

eye line match happened to be

the clock.

P.O.V Mr WicksNO

I used this shot because Mr Wicks

is using diegetic dialogue, which I

wanted to show him saying,

rather than showing Mark whilst

he was saying it.

Over the shoulder shot - MarkNO This could have been a good shot

to use but I preferred using the

close up.

P.O.V Mr WicksYES This time it was necessary to use

the P.O.V shot as it showed

Marks reaction when hearing he

could go.

Over the shoulder shotYES I believe this was a good shot

because it showed both Mark

packing his bag and Mr Wicks

showing his disgust with Mark.

High angle shot – Mr WicksNO This shot wasn’t used because it

would have seen Mr Wicks as

someone inferior in a sense that

using a low angle shot would

have seen him as superior.

Low angle shot – Mr WicksYES I opted to use this shot because it

showed Mr Wicks as a strong

character and the one in charge

in the shot.

Medium Shot, extreme close up,medium shot – zoom

(Montage)

YES We used these three shots tocombine together to make a

montage; this meant that it we

could capture all the emotions

from Mr Wicks whilst it goes with

the music.
