Industry Updates—by Kelvin Heath

↑Crime is Up↑ As the economy gets worse crime is starting to increase. At the same time cities are laying off police to balance their budgets. With this being the case, what can we do as locksmiths? Do we become reactive or more proactive? I SAY LET’S BECOME MORE PROACTIVE. The question then becomes: “HOW DO I BE-COME MORE PROACTIVE?” I’m glad you asked. Here is a simple proactive plan to get you started: • Put together a security survey and offer it to your customers. (ALOA has one that you can request) • Offer your services to businesses, block clubs and community organizations • Contact Real Estate Investors • Leave a business card wherever you spend your money • Start working on building relationships (people spend money with people they know and trust) • Ask your satisfied customers for referrals • Join organizations that you can network with (ex. The Optimist Club, Chamber of Commerce, etc.) • And last but not least: “DO GOOD WORK!!!!!!

SFIC CHEX Tool—For those working often with small for-mat ICs, there will be times when the wrong pin will be inadver-tently inserted into a chamber. Instead of dumping the entire core and starting over, Ultra Security has created the CHEX Tool. Place the CHEX Tool above the chamber in question, use the ejector tool and view the pin stack through the clear tube. This tool, available through ICLS, saves the security professional both time and money.

LSA DOES MORE BETA TESTING Do you remember a short while ago when LSA was asked to evaluate the springs for LAB? About a dozen LSA members volunteered to do the testing and report their findings to LAB’s Vice President, Jerry Roraback. That year LAB launched the new product because of the findings of LSA and a couple of preferred lock-

smith associations on the LAB short list. LSA has been given another opportunity to be first. John Bockert, our manufacturer representa-tive for ASSA is offering a “beta” plan for those just entering the ASSA high security market-place. John Bockert called it the “ASSA Locksmith & Locksmith Association Stimulus Package.” LSA, being sensitive and neutral in political issues, has a hesitancy tying locksmithing to “Stimulus”. So, let’s just say, ASSA is offering LSA a high security offer, not offered to any other association at this time. As it works here, ASSA will probably take it further. Basically, the plan offers an ASSA Twin Maximum Delta Dealer program. Here is how it works: Part I Buy as little or as much ASSA from your favorite ASSA distributor. For every $500 …………..

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE—KEVIN THOMPSON, CRL

Hi All, I just got home from the Advanced Master Keying class and have started to reflect a little on the class as I always do after all the classes. This class was special for a few reasons. This Class was donated by ALOA and William Lynk, CRL to our membership free of charge. Also, this was one of our (LSA) largest classes. Thank you to all the members who attended the class and who contributed a financial donation to help

cover the set up cost of the class, you guys really stepped up. Thank you to ALOA for sponsoring the class, IDN Hardware Sales, Lab Products

and Gene Simon for the give away gifts. Also to Bill Lynk, CRL who did a great job Teaching and Leading the Advanced Master Keying class. His teaching style is like no other, in my opinion he is one of the best instructors and we (LSA) have him as one of our members. For anyone who does not know Bill, he has a passion for what he does as a teacher and a locksmith and it shows in his teaching style. Please, at the next meeting, intro-duce yourself to him and thank him for his service and commitment to our industry.

(continued from page 3) ……...spent on ASSA products as a Twin Maximum Delta Dealer, ASSA will donate $10 in the locksmith’s name to the locksmith association of your choice (hopefully LSA, but not required). If LSA is chosen, those monies will be directly available to you to use for LSA dues or LSA classes. Part II Once you have grown your locksmith business to the point that you want to commit to a proprietary Twin Max dealer keyway, ASSA agrees to credit you FULL value for any and ALL Delta side bars and keys (cut and uncut), toward your own proprietary keyway. Summary If you want to sample the waters in High Security, ASSA is providing you a wholesaler exclusive keyway. If you like it and want your own keyway, ASSA is crediting ALL your purchases and move you into your own keyway. All you need to do is switch the sidebars and cut the customer’s new keys on the replacement key blanks. You now have your own contractually exclusive high security line. If you choose not to want your own keyway, you will have still provided your customer with a legitimate high security product that you can continue to service. Offer Deadline This generous offer is good until December 2009. How to get it Call John Bockert 800-321-7550 and ask. Copy it from the LSA website. www.LsaMichigan.org Come to any LSA meeting and pick one up one for yourself.

LET’S TALK BUSINESS

I must acknowledge IDN Hardware Sales for what they do for us as Locksmiths. Not only the Trade Show and the incredible amount of hours it must take to put together, but the fact that they sponsor education for us. I was able to attend the class with Joey “D”, Joey Dalessio on marketing. If you are inter-ested in growing your business, his was the class to attend. It was two full hours of useful information on business. I can’t begin to repeat all of the information that was presented. He

did suggest that every locksmith have a web site. More people than ever are using com-puters and the days of picking up that 5 pound phone book are diminishing. If you choose to create a website, do it professionally. Set up a program so the information can be easily updated without excessive costs. No one wants to visit a website that was created in 2004! Very few people in the class actually had websites, I’d say 5 out of 25. I always thought that a website would draw customers that I really didn’t want. By that, I mean customers well out of my service area. A website may do that , but not usually. Most consumers will shop for a locksmith in their locality. What if a person in Traverse City has a property in your service area, what a great way to find you! Getting back to the IDN Trade Show, it would be wrong to only mention Joey D.. The fact that they bring in manufacturers (showing new products) and the informative sales reps is a huge plus for us as customers of IDN. I have heard from some of the reps that the IDN Hardware Sales Show is one of the best Locksmith shows in the Midwest. It can be a real challenge as business owners to travel (mostly out west) to the ALOA shows. We all need to thank the staff of IDN/Hardware Sales and Arnie Goldman for what they do, how they support LSA and the Locksmith community in general.

Rob and Stefanie now have four children. Rob joined LSA and ALOA in the late 1980’s. He stated, “I strive to be the best I can be in the profession by my appearance and needed skills”. Can any of you fellow lock-smiths say, you drove onto the Silverdome field to unlock a Cadillac at mid-field? Rob did and enjoyed it in his own quiet way. We of LSA salute you!
