how To gET NoTICEd BY A FASHION EDITOR

industry is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome in this extremely competitive market. Like all artistic disciplines, it takes more than having a cool product or a savvy social media presence. We’ve asked industry veteran, editor-at-large Meggan Crum for some tips and advice on how to get your brand noticed now.

JPK How does a brand or designer get noticed by a fashion editor?

MC First and foremost, it’s about the quality and design of the product. The product is more important than the pitch. I am looking at a look book or line sheet before anything else.

“Product is most interesting to me when it looks like it fits a trend, but isn’t just following a trend. I want to be intrigued. Especially if I discover something unusual, I’m on a mission to get that on one of my pages!”

JPK Do brands needs a big PR agency in order to gain exposure?

MC It can help if you have the budget to pay for one, but what you also don’t get is the one on one relationships with the media that you would want. Just like if you outsource all your sales to a sales showroom and you never meet with a buyer from a store, that could be dangerous because at a certain point you need and want to know that buyer or editor. JPK What are editors looking for in September in terms of trends or direction or specific designers?

MC They’re just looking for something that feels different. I really think that this is the era of the small independent designers because everything else becomes ubiquitous. You can see these large designers with these handbags that every girl is wearing, and you start to want to differentiate yourself by wearing something that’s smaller and different so that something asks,

“OMG, where did you get that bag?” So I really think it’s about fresh and new.

JPK Do you feel that RTW brands need to do a runway show or presentation to get in front of the press?

MC I would say absolutely no to arunway show because putting on a runway show not only is a huge expense, but you’re now competing with every other designer’s show. I think trade shows and smaller media press days are the way to go, especially when you can show with other similar designers.

JPK How important are trade shows, and do editors attend trade shows?

MC Trade shows are important to editors, they do attend. But the editors want a good experience. I tended not to go to trade shows that I felt were overwhelming or massive, because it wasn’t fun. The shows that I did attend were really curated, so I felt like what I was seeing was relevant. JPK Any other words of advice to brands or designers trying to get on an editor’s radar?

MC I always appreciate a personal email from a designer. I feel like it’s a more meaningful connection. The biggest mistake to avoid is don’t send an email that doesn’t have images of your collection. Remember, product first!
