What is Home Schooling?

• “Homeschooling allows students to work at their own pace and parents to blend family, life and schoolwork into their own schedule. Homeschooling is the full responsibility of the parent, is not supervised by a British Columbia certified teacher, is not required to meet provincial standards, and is not inspected by the Ministry of Education. .”

Are These Stereotypes True?

• Home schooled children were found to participate in eight different extracurricular activities a year, giving them plenty of opportunity to socialize

• A study at Concordia University pointed out that even though public school students have more opportunities to build their social skills from their environment, several factors give home schooled students more opportunities to learn because of the difference in class size, individual instruction and more time that is spent on what the child needs to work on

• A study conducted in 2004, revealed children educated at home outperformed their peers in math, reading and language

• Research has shown home-schooled children show less behavioral problems

The one to one instruction that is given to home schooled children results in higher academic performances on standardized tests than children attending public schools.

Home schooling can create closer bonds with family members.

Question #5When do you think a parent should decide to home school?

A:• A boy is constantly bullied and

targeted at his school because he is Muslim. He is branded as a “terrorist.” Even though the boy’s mother talked with his teachers, there was not much that changed between the boy’s interaction with the students. Should the parents choose to home school their child in this situation?

B:

• A boy was labeled as “rambunctious” at his school because he was known for his bad behavior. He is a handful, hard to control and very noisy. Should the parents choose to home school their child?
