Mr. Steven Wojcikiewicz Steve Wojcikiewicz is an assistant director in the educational issues department of the American Federation of Teachers. Before coming to the AFT in the fall of 2013, Steve was an associate professor of teacher education at Western Oregon University, where he taught courses in educational psychology, educational philosophy, curriculum and instruction, and research methods. His research and writing focus on the intersection between educational theory and classroom practice. He has worked in education for nearly two decades, starting as a high school social studies teacher and band director and also working as an experiential educator aboard sailing ships before teaching at the college level. While working at Western Oregon, Steve was a member of his local AFT affiliate, and he served as both a local and a state officer in the union. He has a degree in history and economics from the University of Notre Dame, an MAT from the University of Portland, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Michigan State University.
Professor Colman McCarthy "I am a journalist for one reason—to use whatever skills I have to ease suffering in the world." For 30 years, Colman McCarthy was a columnist for the Washington Post. As the founder of the Center for Teaching Peace in Washington D.C. , Professor McCarthy has been working to get American educators to see violence as learned behavior that can be overcome by adding comprehensive peace studies programs to the curriculum at the nation's 80,000 elementary schools, 26,000 high schools and 3,100 colleges. In addition, he is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Maryland. He has appeared on national media programs such as Crossfire, The Today Show and Weekend Edition on NPR just to name a few. He continues to speak at colleges and universities such as Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, American University, and Princeton teaching about peace and conflict. Followers of his writing cherish Colman McCarthy’s work for the passion of his convictions and his idealism. He convincingly and passionately calls on students to defy the status quo and become more involved in the lives of others. When asked to teaching a writing course, his response is “I’d rather teach peace.”

Mr. Dennis Van Roekel Dennis Van Roekel is president of the National Education Association, which represents more than 3 million public school employees. As NEA president, he leads the nation’s largest labor union and advocate for quality public schools. He is a longtime activist for children and public education and taught high school mathematics for 23 years. Van Roekel is committed to improving student learning and enhancing the teaching profession, which he believes go hand-‐in-‐hand. In December 2011 NEA unveiled its bold agenda to help teachers transform their own profession – the “Leading the Profession” three-‐point plan, whose main components are raising the bar for entry, teachers ensuring teacher quality, and union leadership to transform the profession.
In leading the Association, Van Roekel is guided by NEA’s mission: to fulfill the promise of public education and ensure that every child in America, regardless of family income or place of residence, receives a quality education. A recognized leader on education issues, he has testified before Congress, and serves as vice president of Education International for North America and the Caribbean. He has also been the invited speaker at numerous forums and national summits, and is a frequent commentator on education issues in print and broadcast media.
